1. "On The Road Again" From The Even Dozen Jug Band, of which John Sebastian was a member.
2. Hi Gilbert, Thanks for stirring the memories pot. Just one correction: The Even Dozen Jug Band was composed of Pete Siegel, Stefan Grossman, Bob Gurland, Maria D'Amato and strangely enough, the incredible Joshua Rifkin (r.i.p). , Fred Weiss David Grisman, on mandolin (wow!) and Steve Katz, who moved on to "The Blues Project", along with several other players. John Sebastian did play harmonica with the group, but left before their sole record came out on Elektra. Dave Van Ronk formed his own jug band, "The Rag Time Jug Stompers, with Dave, Artie Rose, Barry Kornfield and Danny Kalb. They, too, put out one record
3. methinks the only solution to shitty mp3 and compression is to stop purchasing shitty music: no more downloads from the purveyors of dreck and throwing business to those who care not a whit about music quality. if the musicians themselves became involved, then you would have a movement. quality of sound is not even a variable for the music companies; they listen to the 'bottom line', first, last, always. the toughest problems is bringing 'kids' into the fold. kids want quantity and variety at minimum cost; they will, in the main, be satisfied with a transistor radio approach to music listening. that is part of being young, i guess. we are, at best, a niche of a niche of a niche market. but, as was said back in the day "...dare to struggle dare to win".
4. pseudo rationality: tortuous, illogical attempt at logical "proof".
5. it would seem that problems at this time would be early. i am going to first clean the laser, then, if not remedied, take it over to the local apple store, or the computer loft (which handles apple) in boston. thanks
6. my 2010 mac mini internal dvd/cd is dying on me. i want to replace it with an external player, ripper, burner. I would spend up to $200 for a rock solid reliable piece. i assume connection to the mini would be via usb and i would continue to use itunes/pure music. thanks for your recommendations.
7. thanks for the suggestion. i am aiming to get the digital out. sounds like the hrt + amp + iphone: a three box set, so to speak. john
8. hi- can i get some suggestions for a one piece combo dac/headphone amp for my iphone, fed from the iphone line out. i would love to get digital out and run it through the amp. i envision that the one piece would fit over the iphone and be held in place with a band. i can spend ca $500. i much appreciate your suggestions. thanks john
9. i have followed instructions. how do i actually operate/engage the equalizer- selectively manipulate settings to accommodate for frequency losses; there is no spectrum analyzer interface to 'tune'. thanks again./ jt
10. wow. will give it a go. many thanks! jt
11. hi- am running pure music/itunes. i have a moderate hearing loss in both ears that i would like to correct for in the digital realm (hearing aids just ruin the sound quality, though do 'correct' for the loss). can any one recommend a plug in equalizer program that will nicely handshake with pure music? i don't need anything with lots of bangs and whistles. thanks.
12. thanks for the responses. very helpful. jt
13. hi- quick question: i altered the audio midi setting on my mini to 24/96. when playing itunes at 16/44 loss less and upsampling, the sound is of higher quality (for me): more 'air' and generally stronger midrange - just increased clarity of vocals. will altering audio midi 'actually' produce these changes? thanks.
14. chris is a fine and knowledgeable guy, no doubt about it. no one doubts that for a second. but, i, for one, look for a complete review of a product prior to expending time, energy and money to purchase it. enthusiasm is a grand thing; but lacking some analysis, it is merely enthusiasm and offers little to many readers in the way of meaningful assistance. i believe that chris read the criticism in the supportive tone it was offered and then moved on to a far more usable and real review. and that is to his credit. and that only only fortifies his credibility and legitimacy.
just my two cents.
johnnyturbo
15. thanks for the fine review.
question: the pre and dac options make the nova a solid deal. the amp portion, seemingly, not terribly well received. is there a consensus on buying the nova for the dac and pre, then using the pre out to a more 'solid' amp?

thanks for your advice.
