1. Can anyone advise whether or not Chris C. has any plans for a new CAP's roon server running rock i.e. the i7 from SGC?
 2. Bill: Great link. You comments are correct. Digitizing music opens up many more options on how a person listens to their music. I will be very excited to get my music ripped/digitized on hdd than conversion to whatever seems fairly easy. I too will be purchasing the Samsung 243 cd/dvd suggested if the 223 is not available. I currently have an Intel duo core and had read an article which suggested the latest greatest CPU i.e. an I-7 4 core would greatly speed up the ripping process. The article showed a picture of 5-6 cd sata drives stacked for the ripping process. I was considering a m/b, cpu upgrade since I have many cd's to rip. Probably will try a few rips with what I have to get an idea of how long my current system will take. Once again, thank you for your help. It gets old having to read volumes of material on how to accomplish certain things in this process, i.e. db settings, etc. but I will get there. Mick
 3. Bill: Thank you for the information and things I can act on immediately. I got a kick out of your remark that "I can't possible be an audiophile". Your absoutly right, I'm not. Due to my circumstances I got boxes of music CD's in storage for years and currently no set up or music to listen to. I am just starting off "cheaply" just trying to get my music to a respectable level on hdd. Everything else will come later. I would love to have a set of the new 3.7 Maggies driven with MacIntosh tube amps and an exotic DAC but for now I will be happy with digital music and a $200 Vdac. Thank you so much for some very useful information you provided. Mick
 4. Thanks for the responses regarding my original post. It leads me to a few more newbie questions: 1. Would you please suggest some CD/DVD players recommended to rip from? 2. Does Chris's "Hardware list" exist which he referred to in his CD Ripping Strategy? If so where can I find it? I have not had luck using the search feature. 3. Some suggestions on NAS selection, setup. I plan to purchase a NAS. It has been years since I have looked at them and I did not realize that some now act as servers with their own OS's, Windows and Linux (hope I got that right). Since this seems to be a critical component perhaps with a CAPS2 I would be willing to spend maybe up to 1000 and leave room for expansion but as usual would prefer to get in cheap, learn and go from there before spend large sums of money. NAS, I take it music would occupy it's own drive(s) with no other data? NAS, any mainstream NAS, fairly solid with good/great consensus? I have boxes of CD's and got to get them onto a NAS so I can start enjoying them. Any help is greatly appreciated.
 5. Hello Chris:

I am new here wanting to rip my cd collection to redbook specs on a hard drive. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have read your CAP2 article. Thank you for your time and effort to advance computer audio for others.

Why would the CAPS2 not be used to rip as well as playback? I know you are setting up a system to eliminate as much noise as possible but it seem like this computer could be used to rip as well. Is noise not a concern when ripping? I have not been able to find the answer to this question.

I have a Win7 OS 64 bit and want to use db poweramp to rip my CD collection. I have not been able to find answers to ripping (hardware/computer/ noise, etc.). Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mick
 6. Sorry for all the questions but I don't seem to be getting any responses to my post regarding hardware/computer to use during ripping. Will any computer work? I plan to use db poweramp on a win7 64 bit OS. Is there any concern for noise contamination during ripping or is that just a concern during playback? I have not seen any mention of this anywhere so I am assuming it is not an issue, any computer will do. Along those lines, for a starter, in the experimenting stage would it be safe to rip, store these (redbook FLAC) on a the same hdd on a seperate partition? If not, will a external HDD work until I can get the NAS situation figured out? Thanks
 7. Thanks for the response Eloise. I hate to sound stupid here but I think I have heard of eSATA I have never heard of rSATA. Can you explain alittle what rSATA is? I do want to set up a NAS and have been reading about them but am somewhat confused with all the options. Can this be for everything else (backup, photos, videos) or is it better to have a sole NAS for music playback only i.e. the CAPS2? It the NAS can be for everything else along with your music I take it one would store music on a seperate drive with extra room for additions versus partitioning the drive for seperate catagories? Is it safe enough to go with spinning enterprise class drives versus Solid state drives? I read Chris's review of the Synology NAS but was worried about the reviews on the notebook 2.5 drives and their higher failure rate as compared to some 3.5 drives.
 8. Hello, I am new here trying to get my CD collection to FLAC. I plan on using DBPower Amp software. Is any computer acceptable to rip? Are there any concerns about noise from the power supply, etc. or is that just a concern for play back? Any help would be appreciated.
 9. Hello: I am ready to purchase dbpoweramp to rip my cd collection. I have not come across any information/specifications on what computer to use. Will any computer work? Are there any noise issues I have to worry about since it does have a 700 watt psu with a fan. Am I good to go with any computer and dbpoweramp? In regards to DAC's Chris had a nice review on the Bel Canto 1.5 and the Wavelength Proton. How would the The SOtM dX-USB-HD compare? The specs. and connections look good but obviously there is more to DACs than specs. Has anyone used this DAC and were the results good. Would they be good with the CAPS2? Thanks, Mick

 11. Hello: I am new here. I am at the beginning of perhaps building the CAPS2 server and ripping my CD collection to digital storage. I am looking for the latest greatest tried and proven methods. I noticed the date on the ripping strategy was October 29, 2009, over a hear and a half old. I was wondering if there is a revised document that perhaps I missed, or would a person in my position have to spend numerous hours reading the forums to get the latest modifications since that date? If there are significant changes are these documents being revised? I do really enjoy the site and all the information offered. So much information for a newbie. Can anyone advise if the upcoming OSX Lion perhaps be more FLAC friendly or support FLAC or according to the above mentioned document is the best method to still have an AIFF copy for the OSX side? Is the best method to run a Windows server CAPS2 with an attached NAS versus using a regular PC with a fan/noisy PSU and no USB card? My goal is to get into this at a minimal up front costs. What are the recommendations for a do all DAC? Sounds like a strong recommendation for the Bel Canto 1.5. How does it compare to the Proton? Will they both work with a Mac Book Pro and headphones? Obviously the size of the Proton is much more accomodating if would seem if travel is involved. Any help appreciated. Still trying to grasp some of the fundamentals.
