Article: Meitner Audio MA-1 DAC Review
AudioCynic replied to One and a half's topic in Article Comments
The usual response to the mention of toslink to audiophiles is at best derision. Yet Meitner says its their BEST performing interface. How can that be? -
The story that I recall, as documented by correspondance published by Randi, was that Fremer wanted to impose conditions on the tests. Randi didn't agree, and he backed out. http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/swift-blog/1229-barnum-underestimated-the-birthrate-of-suckers.html http://home.provide.net/~djcarlst/abx_wire.htm

FireWire cable: does it have to be special
AudioCynic replied to audiophile65's topic in General Forum
"Firewrie cable between the Mac and hard drive makes a an difference" The idea that a disk cable can make any difference is, at best, laughable. Then again, you sell $250 firewire cables. -

Why don't you list what you're planning to power with POE and then decide how to supply it. With the exception on IP phones, POE is usually unnecessary. If you just have a few poe devices, you can always by power bricks or use a low cost unmanaged poe switch. -
Santa and other myths are actually important elements in a child's development. You should read Bruno Bettelheim's "Uses of Enchantment" An adult holding on the myths, however, does more harm than good. You might read "How We Know What Isn't So: The Fallibility of Human Reason in Everyday Life".

The entire purpose of putting a low pass filter before conversion is to eliminate the aliasing you're talking about. Most musical instruments have harmonics well above 100 khz, by your logic, you need a sampling rate of 500k. Too bad that in actual testing, no one have been able to demonstrate that anyone can hear the difference between standard redbook sampling and "hi rez".

Why should cutting off a signal that far beyond human perception make any difference?

That's what the web is for. In any case, a Zyxel GS2200-24 has a 56 GB backplane, and you can pick one up for about $300 on Newegg. I know the audiophile market is based on consumers with more dollars than sense, but that doesn't have to extend to ethernet switches. -

You might mention to Juniper's management and their enterprise and carrier customers that switched from Cisco that Juniper is a "consumer" product. -

Cisco is way overpriced and has been losing market share for good reason. Check out Juniper or Zyxel -

You mentioned that they didn't isolate the USB interface and you could hear the difference. Given they went to the expense of building their own dac, why do you think they decided to save the 3 or 4 dollars in parts cost for isolation? -

Cat 5 is for 1GB ethernet, Cat6 is for 10GB. Today, 10GB is pretty rare, in a few years it won't be so rare, so it makes sense to go for Cat6. Both Cat 6 and 6a can handle 10 GB ethernet, the difference is that 6 is limited to 150 feet or so, 6a 300 feet. Unless you have very long cable lengths, you're wasting your money on 6a. -

"Listening is a skill set which needs to be developed" I would say that a doctors skill set in diagnosis is much more learned and is much more skilled than listening to an audio system. Those doctors insist that their clinical judgement be divorced from knowing if a patient is getting a placibo or an expermental drug. The real objection to double blind studies is that they never seem to confirm the mythology that high end music haters are so emotionally and financially invested. My proof they are music haters is their admiration Prof Johnson's Reference Recording which specializes in memorializing the work of second rate performers. Orchestras and soloists whose performances I'd do my best to forget if I ever made the mistake of attend one of their concerts. -

$600 for a power cable, where is P T Barnum when we really need him.
