  1. @AngeloVRA very cool. Not sure I have the skill set to modify an XE card such as you have but it's a very elegant/tidy solution. Is the advantage of this solution vs. an external tX-USBultra, in your eyes, both less boxes to deal with and less USB cables/shorter clock cables? Makes sense to me especially to do it this way if you were using the SCLK-ex inside a server with multiple taps, tidier and neater.
  2. Interesting. What will you be using the HubIn for? As in, once it is installed in your case with the clock board, are you planning on plugging the XE output into it and then on to the LIM, or will it be used to attach NAS/similar to your server? Or something else? My understanding was always that the HubIn is essentially the same as the output/hub board in the ultra, except the ultra has a smaller daughter board above it that accepts power via 2.1mm jack and has a USB B port, vs. the HubIn having the power jack on its board (and no USB B port). Some of SOtM’s products with a USB hub chip have overlap there, though, so it gets a bit confusing.
  3. Oh also @Exocer don't forget to play around with the jumpers on the XE card now that you're using a tX-USBultra -- the ultra does not need 5V on the USB cable, whereas (as you probably know) Yggy LIM/Unison USB does. Possible that with your super high quality power supplies it won't make much difference, but worth A/B'ing.
  4. Thanks for the review, @Exocer -- helps with my decision to upgrade my USB XE when the OCXO board is released, since we're using the same DAC and I also have a tX-USBultra. Definitely agree that the USB XE and the tX-USBultra play very well together. Also not surprised that you said it was helped greatly by the Sean Jacobs, the Audio Bacon review mentioned that the tX-USBultra was the most sensitive device he's ever heard to LPS changes. I'm using a PHD SR4T with it partially based on his review there. Another advantage potentially with the tX-USBultra you should consider is that you can potentially get the clock board inside the unit modified to use its untapped outputs and then use those outputs to reclock your SOtM motherboard, at least I'm pretty sure that would work. I've considered the same when I think of doing a new server build. I realize this would involve getting SOtM (or potentially Crux Audio, aka SOtM USA) to modify both the motherboard and the tX-USBultra, though. I have a tX-USBultra "Special Edition" with the SOtM EMI/RFI paper, upgraded caps, Neotech OCC Silver wire, etc. as well as the 75ohm input (using a Emperor Signature AfterDark OCXO with it, agree with your conclusion that it makes a difference but that power supply seems bigger -- AudioBacon recommended the Snake River Audio Boomslang BNC-BNC as a clock cable during a shootout and that was also good, much better than Blue Jeans that I used temporarily) -- never got a good handle on how much difference Special Edition upgrades make, but those units have been showing up on the used market for some time now, so it's not impossible to get a good deal. Got mine for $750 about two to three years ago here on AS, which amounts to a 50% discount over the ~$1500 Crux Audio charges for a new Special Edition unit with a clock input.
  5. View Classified JCAT USB Card FEMTO For sale is my JCAT USB Card FEMTO. Purchased new from Fully Silent PC's in June of 2020 for $520. Asking for $250. Used quasi-continuously between June 2020 and April of this year, when I upgraded to the JCAT USB Card XE, which is the reason for sale. No issues with the card -- newest firmware loaded. I had removed all jumpers per manufacturer's recommendation while using, but have put them back into stock configuration for buyer's convenience. Firmware is currently set so that one of the two USB ports is disabled, which is also manufacturer's recommendation for best sound quality. If buyer wishes to change to both ports enabled, extremely easy to do so via command line-based tool downloadable from JCAT website. I also can assist buyer with any issues encountered with setup/installation of the card. Will entertain all offers. USPS shipping within CONUS included. Buyer pays for UPS or FedEx shipping if preferred. PayPal fees included, although prefer friends or family when sending funds. JCAT box included along with low-profile PCI-e bracket. Any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Seller internethandle Date 07/19/22 Price 250.00 USD Category Computers / Networking Gear
  6. A general rule of thumb is that unless the mobo has some sort of documentation stating support for ECC (or is made for server-class chips), the ECC function of the RAM will not work. You may (or may not) be able to use the ECC sticks you purchase on a motherboard that doesn’t support them, but they will run in non-ECC mode. This is my understanding, anyway.
  7. Nobody should have to wade through pages upon pages of rehashed, ultimately pointless “debate” (read: entrenchment/tribalism) over objectivism in digital audio to get to any relevant information about the original topic, especially when that topic is a specific product. There’s a whole sub-forum to do that. Start a thread there, if you want. Any assertions that the forum has historically operated any differently is ahistorical at best. The forum’s very former name is “Computer Audiophile” and was built in part on providing audiophile computer build recipes - what did you think was largely discussed here, foobar plugins? When a thread gets overly derailed with this kind of discussion, it’s usually reigned in.
  8. @The Computer Audiophile Chris why let the "propeller heads" as they were rightfully referred to over at Audio Asylum for years re-tread the same old tired bits are bits dreck in the thread? Just banish them to Objective-fi where they belong, please.
  9. Thanks for the reply, logical that the clock board and the JCAT XE having synergy in your case might translate to synergy in my case, given that the same board is sort of the “heart” of the tx-USBultra. Care to comment on how big a jump you felt it was from Femto to XE in terms of SQ?
  10. Hello, Wondering if anyone has experience using a JCAT USB XE with a USB reclocker/conditioner like a SOtM-tXUSBultra or a Innuous Phoenix. I know that Marcin is cautious about using the XE with any such device and instead recommends direct to DAC, but would like to hear from anyone who has heard a combination. Currently I have a JCAT Femto USB into a SOtM tx-USBultra Special Edition, and am eyeing the JCAT USB XE as an upgrade. The SOtM clearly performs better to my ears with the JCAT Femto than with a motherboard port or a Paul Pang V2 USB card, but the Femto card performs less well on its own direct into DAC (both powered by Paul Hynes Design SR4T). Thank you!
  11. Also, to clarify @matthias’ post about Urd, it is purported to improve on Unison by providing a custom-designed Unison USB output to match any Unison-outfitted DAC’s input. Urd will be a CD-based transport, but, at least according to a recent Q&A, will include a USB pass through for those who would like to try the Unison output sans CD. Mike at Schiit was pretty enthused (and surprised) by how much it improved USB playback vs. a motherboard port or what have you. The Unison output is also being tested with other manufacturers’ DACs’ USB inputs to ensure compatibility, so you could use it with a non-Schiit DAC as well.
  12. Yeah, to this point, Unison USB input is very responsive in my experience to putting reclocking/conditioning before it in the chain. I’m using a JCAT Femto USB V2 card with LT3045 regulated LPS -> SOtM tX-USBultra Special Edition with Paul Hynes SR4T -> Unison input on my Less Is More Yggy to very good effect. Also had a noticeable improvement on A2/OG before it. Still, there are quite a few folks who think that AES is the clearest and least colored input. One of these days I’ll get around to trying a Pi2AES with it, which a lot of people say compares favorably with solutions many times its price.
  13. "CoreTemp" has always ran in even the most anemic of W10 custom images I've made, LTSC or not. Works well, very low footprint, relatively current support: https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
  14. What a shame. Hard not to be angry with Paul, then - I feel a great affinity for Stephen, as I intimated earlier in the thread. Paul certainly has made his own bed and must lie in it if that's the case. Best wishes to Stephen and the others at PHD Ltd. effected by this terrible turn of events. To seemingly weather the global events of the last year only to have things come crashing down suddenly due to mismanagement and unscrupulousness just as it seemed things may be returning to 'normal' in some parts of the world would just add insult to injury.
  15. Would be good to see how RedundantSoul is privy to such information. I may attempt to get in contact with Stephen to see if he is willing to confirm or deny any of its content. Hard to have 100% confidence in one anonymous post by a new user formatted in such a way. I, for one, do not understand the insinuation that there isn’t anyone in the thread with any concern for the staff of PHD Ltd. and the thread is only shilling for Paul Hynes or some such nonsense - there have been multiple mentions of Stephen in the thread already.
