  1. Thanks to everyone for their posts - lots of great insights and info :-)
  2. Hello, As per Chris Connaker's recommendation in his "CD Ripping Strategy & Methodology", I've been trying to find an online source for "PDF liner notes", but to no avail. Can anyone suggest a site that offers liner notes for download?
  3. I'm just getting started in the world of digital music and have questions re selecting a laptop to use as my music server. I've ordered a Bryston 4BSST2 power amp, BP6 preamp & a BDA-2 DAC as my core components, and will likely be using dBpoweramp for ripping and JRiver for manangement/playback. What are the important considerations when selecting a laptop? For e.g.: Make/model? i5 vs i7 chip? HDD vs SSD? RAM? Operating system: Windows 7 vs. Windows 8.1? Any and all contributions regarding this matter would be appreciated!
  4. Hi Audioseduction, Thanks for the response. Re your suggestion to use an external hard drive ... As an experiment, I copied some digital music files (WMA format) to a Seagate 1T external "Expansion" USB HD (model ST310005EXA101-RK) and connected it to my existing laptop (Acer TravelMate 7720-6807). I also copied the same music files to the laptop's internal HD. Using Windows Media Player, I played some tracks from the internal drive and then from the external HD. Those played from the internal HD sounded okay, but when I played tracks from the external HD, there was a persistent hum present - even when no tracks were played. I assume this is mechanical noise from the external drive being passed through the system. This leads to the question, are there external HD's that can be used that won't introduce noise in the playback stream?
  5. Hi DM, Thanks for the information. For the internal drive I'm thinking of using Seagate's new hybrid drive (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd/). What's your opinion on hybrid drives?
  6. Hello, I'm new to this site and the world of digital audio. I have some initial questions about setting up my first digital music server using a Windows laptop computer. 1 For the operating system, would Windows 7 Professional be the better choice over Windows 7 Home Premium? 2 Would the 64-bit version be better than 32-bit? 3 If the 64-bit version is best, will applications such as dBpoweramp, WinAmp, J. River, etc. run under it? 4 For the internal hard drive, should I choose a 7200rpm drive over a 5400rpm drive? Or, should I consider a hybrid SSD drive?
