  1. I've tried to take out as many variables as possible. The comparison is between Digital out from CD17 to DAC and the CD17 analog output to the amp. The only variable I can't eliminate is Coax cable coming out of the CD17. I've switched around every combination of interconnects and Line-in connections to the amp to see if that made any difference, but it was always consistent. The 100D appears to be inferior the CDP with every combo. Kind of surprised me since nearly 100% of the time, I've read the Moon products are supposed to be better than Arcam. Perhaps I've gotten so used to the Arcam sound, that the Moon is too different for me. (?) Or maybe the 100D combined with either the amp (Arcam A38) or Totem Arro is not a good match.
  2. For those of you who purchased either the 100D or 300D, how long did it take to get to its true sound? I've been running my 100D for about 70 hours now, and when comparing to my Arcam CD17, it doesn't come close in quality. The Arcam has a wide soundstage, depth, and extended highs and lows. The 100D in comparison sounds really thin with a crushed soundstage. The only variable between the two is the coax running from the CD17 to the DAC. I've used the same interconnects for both. I've also found the 100D to be more laid back / recessed than the Arcam that is more forward. From what I was told, the two should be similar from that point of view. Break in issues again? Thanks in advance for any comments
  3. Thanks Jon. My Moon 100D apparently employs an asynch Sample Rate Converter (SRC). I'm assuming that's what you're talking about, so I should be OK on the jitter front?
  4. As for my computer setup, I use a dedicated sound card, an X-Meridian, and a Digital coax cable to the 100D. The software I use for ripping is dbPoweramp, and for playback, JRMC. For JRMC, I started using ASIO driver, but found it stuttered when CPU was being used, so changed to WASAPI and everything's been good since!
  5. Hi all, Currently have the following setup: Arcam A38 integrated Arcam CD17 CDP Simaudio Moon 100D (hooked up to PC only, not CDP) NAD C542 CDP (for occasional HDCD playback and use in other rooms) I'm moving towards ripping my CDs to my PC and playing back from there. Will still use a CDP because I'm sure it will take a while to move everything over. I've started thinking about whether I will upgrade the 100D as I get more serious about PC playback (nice program with SimAudio to get 100% of 100D price back to apply to 300D). Then it hit me.... Why don't I sell the CD17 (the better of the two CDPs) and the 100D, and put the money toward a better DAC (Moon 300D, Rega DAC, Wyred 4 Sound). I could use the digital out of the C542 and use the new DAC for both CDs and PC playback. Are there any flaws in my logic? Is the DAC in the Arcam CD17 that good that I could sacrifice quality? Is the transport that important? Sorry for the long post. Curious on what people think as this is something that will come up often as we move towards computer audio. Thanks!
  6. As stated by Eloise and ted_b, the A38 has different trim settings by input. Apparently out-of-the-box the CD line-in is set to +12db, and the rest are at 0. I set the Aux to +12db and all is well now... ted_b, you suggest lowering the CD instead of raising the Aux. Is there a reason for that? I find that if it's not at the CD's setting then I have to raise the volume to the equivalent of 1 or 2 0'clock to drive my Arros, which I don't want to do. thanks again everyone... David
  7. The CD line-in on my amp is about 12db louder than the other line-ins!
  8. Interesting... So if I stream digital out from the CDP to the DAC and see the same lower level then that would be it. I'll give it a try. Thanks!
  9. First post... so please be kind I understand why people would want to use ReplayGain when ripping CD's so that the albums / songs are all relatively the same volume. However..... I have ripped CDs to FLAC using dbPoweramp without Replaygain expecting to get a copy of what was on the CD. When I play the FLAC file via JRMC -> Moon 100D DAC -> Arcam A38 it is significantly lower in volume to playing via CD on Arcam CD17 -> A38. To get the same volume I need to crank up the A38 by +10, which brings it to approximately 1 or 2 O'clock, which makes me uncomfortable. Am I missing something? Shouldn't the FLAC file be encoded with the same gain level as the CD? Help.... please? Thanks in advance. David
