  1. Powerline could also be a way to go, but I'd be more comfortable not getting the mains involved. If I understand correctly DavidL, you're using the Extreme exactly as I proposed, to extend the wireless network and as a switch for additional wired devices (like a net radio/second hifi/tv)?
  2. So it won't work. Back to the drawing board... Is there any device out there that can take up a wifi signal and transfer the data by ethernet cable into another device, and boost the wifi in that area?
  3. So using an Express to bridge a wifi network into another room and then plugging a streaming device into its ethernet jack would essentially be the same as running a wired connection? thanks
  4. Seems that any NAS will do then, ok. What about the software, does it matter? thanks!
  5. If one forgets about the optical jack and just uses a network cable from the AE to say a streaming device? The AE is used as an extension of a wireless network. Is this not possible or is there still much jitter? Any other way of extending a newtork without ripping open all the walls to install network cables?
  6. I'm confused. To play music with a streamer/network player, by ethernet or Wifi, from my home network, can I use any NAS? Does it need specific software? Should it have Twonky (whatever that is)? Can I just connect it to my Time Capsule, copy my music to it and start streaming to all devices? Can I play music from it on a Mac or a basic kitchen Wifi-radio/music player? What do I need to know when I go and buy one? Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, couldn't find the answers. thanks!

    Cover art in FLAC

Actually I haven't been doing double format rips because I'd have to start over and I'm just a third into my collection. But if I need to convert to Flac I now know Max can do it. Bit on the fence with formats. Aiff still seems most logical uncompressed and as OSx isn't Flac friendly it's easier. Just waiting for the hardware manufacturers to confirm that Aiff is futureproof in the world of hifi.. fingers crossed.

    Cover art in FLAC

Great, thanks for the tip! Conversion seems to work well with Max. What's a good compression setting for Flac? Haven't dared try converting all in one go yet. Too bad that one app can't do it all, this is starting to feel like back in the days of Win98. BTW, how do I configure Max to drop different file formats in different folders like XLD does?

    Cover art in FLAC

It seems I still have to open 'each folder as disc' to get any data or artwork. If I just set XLD to convert everything it starts making copies by unknown artist, unknown album etc. Bummer. It seems as though Naim are starting to include AIFF support and I really hope one of their streamers is in my future Maybe I won't have to convert everything after all. I got your email on the popping and crackling, Damien. Have to try some of the things you suggested. Thanks!

    Cover art in FLAC

Ok, thanks! When I open a Flac file in Audirvana I can see the artwork on the screen but cannot see artwork by the filename in Finder, as I can with other soundfiles or pictures. Just a "blank page". But I suppose the artwork is embedded so it won't be a problem with other players in the future? Great if I'll be able to convert my whole library into Flac in one go with XLD and keep all artwork and metadata. Would be blood, sweat 'n tears otherwise. ps. Damien, I still have a crackling and popping Audirvana and can't use it. Should I buy Fidelia for now or do you have an idea for a fix? Would be cool if it worked.
  11. Hi! Just in the midst of ripping my cd-collection to Aiff (playing with iMac). In the future I'll probably switch to a dedicated digital streamer. Problem is, these seem to prefer Flac. Now, I can't use Flac at the moment because I'm in an all Mac household, including iPods/Phones. Might be able to use both formats in the future, however. I can rip into two different formats with XLD, and even get them into different folders. But where is the Flac cover art? XLD usually finds the covers, no prob. But it doesn't seem to embed them into the Flac files I'm making. Will I be able to easily add the cover art in the future if I convert my whole Aiff library into Flac? thanks!
  12. I have to run iTunes before Fidelia. Otherwise I get an error which knocks out audio and I have to reboot. Only 6 days left on the trial..hmm
  13. Thanks wgscott, just copied my music to a WD Elements disc and connected it to the TC. File sharing seems to work fine. Now I just need an external firewire disc to play from on my iMac. And the DAC of course. Then to rip all the rest of my cd's. So glad I didn't go for that expensive ripNas. Seemed pointless, just hope the drive on my iMac can handle all the action! Do you know if it matters for adding to the iTunes library if I rip cd's into separate folders or just let XLD put everything in the same folder and then pick them up? It would be quicker.
  14. Hi! I'm new to the forum and a new convert from cd's. I'm considering using a firewire drive to keep my music on, attached to my iMac and backing the files up on a usb hard drive connected to the Time Capsule we have at home. This way I'll have backups and my wife can get the music copied to her Macbook wirelessly (and converted to something smaller). Are there any snags? Do I really need a NAS for anything except the future when I might get a dedicated streamer in stead of the iMac? I'm buying a nice Hegel dac for the iMac and my old Rega cd-player. I'm trying out the HD10 right now and will probably go for the HD20. Also demoing Pure Music and Fidelio, and will most likely get Fidelio. Thanks!
