best way to connect iPad to Dac?
HerinDude replied to Paulie S's topic in DAC - Digital to Analog Conversion
I did a little research on iPad/CCK to DAC compatibility before I purchased a DAC. I used the iPad/CCK to transition from listening to CDs to computer based music, so it was critical for me to get a DAC that worked in this configuration. I really wanted a Schiit Gungnir, and pinged Schiit. They replied that all three of their DACs work with the iPad/CCK. So I got lucky. I am listening to the iPad/CCK->Gungnir now using just a USB cable direct (no powered USB hub needed). It sounds much better than the CD player. -

Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (CCK). I currently use this with an iPad2. The CCK plugs into the iPad, and the CCK provides a USB port. Plug into a DAC that supports USB with USB cable, and you have tunes. (I don't know if it is still the case, but not all USB DACs are recognized. I think it may have something to do with how much power the DAC draws from the port.) -
Best DA/C for under 1000. (With Balanced Out)

+1 for Schiit Gungnir. I have had mine for exactly one week. I can't quit listening to my system. -
Christmas Music That Doesn't Suck
HerinDude commented on curmudgeon's blog entry in curmudgeon's Blog
On CD recordings, Crystal Lewis has always had a quality sound. She has two Christmas CDs (available from iTunes too): This absolutely has a Jazz sound: http://m1m.us/crystallewis-holidaycd.aspx This one has a more traditional sound: http://m1m.us/crystallewis-homefortheholidayscd.aspx As to the empty nest and holidays: it is brutal the first year. My wife was miserable, and had no interest in celebrating or decorating. Later, HerinDude -
A Rock n Roller’s Guide to Designing an Audiophile Sound System

Keep it coming! "Can you feel the punch of the snare drum in your chest?" This is the sound I have been looking for, but I didn't know how to accurately describe it. I have a nice, detailed sound with my system, but I don't have the 'thwack' when I crank the volume. Later, HerinDude -
Dament, I recently purchased a new CD player, and I am content with the sound quality. The CD player is a Marantz CD5004 ($350), and it sounded superior to the various budget DVD and CD players I compared it to. Here is an online review: http://www.stereophile.com/content/marantz-cd5004-cd-player Later, HerinDude

wgscott That is a fair observation. A double-blind test is difficult to perform alone; therefore, it didn't occur. It does sound like an advertisement letter doesn't it. Actually, the published letter is only about 80% of the original letter (they removed some other product related stuff and comments...). I normally don't respond to articles, but I felt pretty strong after performing my 'non double-blind' test.

I couldn't resist responding to this post. I originally thought that speaker cables would not make a difference. I performed some speaker cable shootouts in my system, and DH Labs Silver Sonic Q10 speaker cables made a significant difference. (This product is in the ballpark of what you want to spend.) I learned of these speaker cables from an article on another web site (www.ultraaudio.com) and sent a letter back to the editor that was published. That letter has many details of my review (if you are interested in the detailed difference made by the cables.): http://www.ultraaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=128:thanks-for-the-dh-labs-recommendation&catid=32:letters&Itemid=47 Later, Paul
