  1. Hi, I don't know too much about all the n/g/b stuff, but have just got an AEx and Spotify / Airfoil and am getting dropouts in the sound that I do not get on itunes.............what could I try to stop this? I have found a drop down menu in the airport express settings that mention the n/g/b stuff but can't see an option that gets rid of the n part ??? .......... Thanks!
  2. I don't understand the "move to XLD" bit though?? Can I not convert to AIFF in itunes ?? Thanks
  3. Hi, Am i right in thinking that the only way to attach album art to WAV files in itunes is to add a 1/1000th of a second mp3 file to each album and attach the artwork to that (as posted by someone on here back in august 2008)?? Or have Apple managed to sort this out now, and given us an easier way ?? Thanks...
  4. Having read some of the manual that Chris mentioned, I have a feeling that the recommendations on the Wiki site are aimed at those using a Benchmark............... Martin
  5. Thanks for your reply. So would you recommend that I do follow this advice in my case, and set itunes to 24bit, 96khz ?? Most of what I have read in the past says NOT to do this.................. Thanks, Martin
  6. That is very interesting........... http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/wiki/index.php/ITunes-QuickTime_for_Windows_-_Setup_Guide I thought the general advice was to set the software to match the sample rate and bit depth of the recording, but here it suggests setting it to match the maximum the hardware can handle. I'd need to set it to 24 / 96 in my case. Does anyone agree with this ???!!! Martin
  7. Hi Audio_Elf. My system is far from convenient ! I output from my pc via firewire to a Presonus Firebox to do the D/A conversion. This also includes a pre-amp, and it is this I use for volume control. My equipment is right next to my listening position. I have no remote control other than ipod touch, but using this for volume would of course degrade sound quality. As far as other sources go I have just one more analogue source input via the rear line in sockets which are automatically switched on when the pc is off or the firewire cable unplugged....................... It meets my needs, but of course I'd rather the speakers themselves had a remote multi input preamp. I use them in my living room which is not particularly large and they are about 2.2 metres from my head when in my listening position. It'll be interesting to see how they perform in Beemb's far larger listening room, where they will also be a bit further away. I had heard that B&W were used in high end studios, but in terms of pro gear I'm sure there are a lot of good studios out there using the larger mid / long field speaker systems from Dynaudio, Klein + Hummel etc . I'm sure that both highend hifi and pro systems sound good - the big difference will be the price. Think those B&Ws are approx £13k. Some Dynaudio Air 25s are about half that...........including the amps, as they are active. The B&Ws are passive I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), so I know what I'd put my money on when it comes to sound quality........
  8. I did indeed sell my Naim / Proac setup after comparison with the AVI of my brother (Beemb). It should be noted however that my Naim was the entry level Nait 5, so I'd imagine that the equipment mentioned above would be a step up on this. I am certainly a fan of the pro-audio side now though. You do get so much more for your money. Still planning to test the Mackies against the ADMs in the same room, running from the same equipment, with the same music (when I can be bothered to take it all to Beemb's), so I'll reserve judgment until then. It is very clear to me though that you do become used to the sound of your own system and so it instantly has an advantage to your own ears, as something that sounds different, sounds wrong...........Much listening needed.
  9. Very interesting article. Agrees with my thoughts to be honest. Some compressed music can sound very good, but if you can have it uncompressed then why wouldn't you !?! Nice to see the science backing this up. I rip all my CDs as WAV. When you consider how many CD's you can fit onto a 1TB hard drive, and the falling cost of these drives, then it just makes sense if you are even slightly interested in getting the best quality sound. However, if I'm purchasing a download, and a high bit-rate version is not available, I do still buy some lower bit-rate music, and just hope it's a good one!!
  10. There was certainly very little - if any - difference between the two. Will carry out some more testing. The great thing is it's so simple for any one to test this, so give it a go, and let us know your thoughts ??!! On a different note, we are planning to set-up a Mackie vs AVI listening session in the near future (and include some pics if Matt (beemb) can work out how to upload them!!!). The general feeling so far, is that these two pairs of active speakers sound different, but very good. As we have only listened in our own homes, how much of this is down to the room we don't know (the rooms are VERY different).........................
  11. Ah i see now!! Will give it all a try tonight............. Yeah, I've not had the iTouch long, but I'm amazed at what it can do and all the applications you can get for it! As a remote it is superb when used as John mentions up above, but I'd like to use it for others things as well. I have iMonkey on it, but unfortunately it doesn't allow you to browse your whole library like you can when controlling itunes (you can only browse your playlists) - i'm wondering whether VNC will make the control of MM more flexible. Go and treat yourself to an iTouch Bob!! Martin
  12. I've had a quick look at the tightVNC site. I assume the download to PC part is pretty simple, but does anyone know what / if specific software is needed on the ipod touch too ?? Perhaps your friends (or "geeks" as you put it!!) might be able to help me again, Bob ! : ) Martin
  13. Looks like TightVNC could be the one to try! I'm liking the fact it's free too! What an amazing toy the ipod touch is ..................... I think Beemb could be out buying himself one as we speak !!! Martin
  14. Thanks Chris. Had a quick look at that and looks like XP professional only. I need one that'll work with the standard XP, home edition i think they call it ! ? Martin
  15. Interested in knowing a bit more about this ?? I'm guessing it might be a little fiddly on the ipod touch, but could be useful.............. What program is it, or are there lots ?? What app is need for the ipod touch ?? Thanks Martin
