  1. Sorry I'm not providing any answers but more questions. I have been looking at this DAC as well however I want to know if It can be connected to my home receiver and use my speakers to listen to instead of just headphones? I hope this isn't a dumb question but I and a beginner too. Thanks.
  2. I'm so glad this site exists because my eyes were starting to gloss over when I was trying to figure this stuff out on my own. Thank you all so much for your help and your quick responses.
  3. What exactly is a V link? And when you guys say to test out a DAC before you buy it, where do you do this exactly. I live a fairly large city had a hard time even finding places to sample Speakers and Headphones. And thank you all for your input. Looks like I have some DAC homework to do. Thanks!
  4. Thanks for the advice. I'm betting my toslink is plastic. I'll look into a glass one. Now if I want my computer on one side of the room and my receiver on the other (about 12 feet apart) would it be better to have a long toslink and short av cables or vice versa? And also since I will have to piece this together over time for cost purposes what should I get first the Pure Music software or save and get a good DAC. Also I know there are tons of forums on DACs but what DAC do you have? And if it is over $1k then what do you recommend as a good 'modest' DAC to start with? Preferably one I could grow into. Thanks for your time.
  5. Actually I decided to just post the steps to erasing the unwanted files. First quit ITunes. Then In finder go to your House icon. Then Library. Then Preferences. Under preferences scroll down and erase EVERYTHING that starts with 'com.apple.itunes' I had dozens of these files that needed to be erased. After you are done restart Itunes and play a song and the distortion should be gone. If you go back in to the file where you erased all of the files 3 new files will have regenerated. They are com.apple.itunes.eq.plist com.apple.itunes.plist com.apple.ituneshelper.plist these are the only com.apple.itunes files that should be there. As an added fix you might even want to go into disk utility and run 'repair disk' on you hard drive. I had a several files that needed repair.
  6. Thanks to you both for replying. After I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with apple care we were able to fix the problem. There were some ITunes files in the depths of my computer that were not supposed to be there. The tech didn't know what they were or how they got there or even how I could prevent them from coming back in the future. After I deleted them It played like it should. A question for either one of you is that when I was in the Midi settings it says that the format is in 2ch-24bit. Should I change this to 16 bit since at this time I don't even own any 24bit music? Does it matter? Also if anybody has a similar problem with this just let me know and I will post all the steps to find the unwanted files. Thanks!
  7. Hello all, I'm taking baby steps into this whole computer audiophile world and at the most basic steps I'm not producing the quality I think I should. I have my IMac connected to my Yamaha 667 receiver via mini toslink into the optical port on the receiver. I don't have a DAC. I've narrowed it down enough to know that it is not the receiver or the speakers they sound fine from a normal CD source. However, when I play a Mp3, AIFF, FLAC or CD from my IMac I get distortion whether its through the receiver or through headphones. I've tried playing them on both Itunes or VLC which are the only programs I have. Is there a setting on the computer that I am supposed to set or is this why people use DACs in the first place. Or maybe its my computer? I tried looking at other threads but nothing really seemed to fit my problem but I do apologize if this is a repeat question and would greatly appreciate any help.
