  1. Actually more ''on-topic'' than off. excellent story/comparison. I would only add a couple of thoughts/opinions to your comments. The components you were listening to in Magnolia, though good stuff, are far from the ''best-for-the-money''. As you look around in your newly lit-up world of mid-fi, I firmly believe that you'll find even more realism available at a lower cost, than those pieces to which you were listening. Amongst other considerations, I strongly suggest that you listen to TUBE equipment... not just the expensive stuff, but the cheapest available. I think you'll be glad you did. Enjoy the journey.
  2. Politically, you’ve got a helluva point there. As to Product evaluation... not so much. Have you ever driven a Ferrari or a serious (collector's item quality) Muscle Car? I absolutely assure you - no ''smoke -and-mirrors'' - They seriously out-perform the vehicles you can buy for 10-20% of the same price. They are serious performers and NOT just some variation on ''perceived value''. That said; the basis of Audiophile/Hi-Fi products in the real world is to enlighten the ear and satisfy the soul. One can enjoy an afternoon on the back-roads in a Honda 2000, just as much as in a $200,000 Ferrari... just don't rationalize to your self - or anyone else - that it's the same experience in either vehicle... it's just plain not true. Who cares anyway? I, for one, do not care. I take my satisfaction where I find it... and when I kindest to myself and the experience, I don't pass judgment... I just enjoy it. OK so far? Well here's where we differ. When I first listened back to live recordings I had done, supported by both experience and research, many decades ago; I realized that they Did Not sound the same in playback as they had live. Period. Ever since that clarity on the issue, I have sought the most reasonable and efficient path to ''reproduction realism''. Done well, it ain't cheap. I can certainly enjoy a well played and recorded concert on almost any system available... and I can carefully spend a very moderate amount of money on well-chosen equipment to optimize that experience... but I guarantee you that if given an opportunity to spend 3-10 times the money on the repro-system, I can improve my realization of my dream (to hear it as recorded) by a considerable amount. No mumbo-jumbo, no consideration of ''perceived value'', no smoke and mirrors, and most certainly Not an elitist perspective on the actuality of the realism of the moment. In short… particularly in the UK and the USA, as well as France and Germany; brilliant and concerned audio engineers have been working hard for decades to bring us higher fidelity... and quite successfully. In closing let me address the issue least discussed in any forum I've ever been in or, for that matter, any discussion I can ever remember.......... Emotion is the essence of music. Truth told; there is no reason to listen to music other than the exquisite rendering of emotion in all its many forms. The rest is just "Bass & Treble", etc.... Who cares. I for one care little for any aspect of reproduction that does less than convey the most possible in the way of emotion for the investment of money and effort entailed. THE FIRST NUANCES LOST, in the Reduction of Fidelity of reproduction, is the Conveyance of EMOTION. Every step taken towards a higher level of fidelity will first-and-foremost increase our ability to perceive the ''heart and soul'' of the music... the ONLY part that truly matters. So, I too have a limited budget, as well as other constraints upon my perusal of incredible reproduction of music, however I don't fool myself that it's only ''perceived value'' or ''elitist mentality'' or any other ameliorating rationalizations that tend to make me become self-limiting. I look at it ''the way it is''. There are incredible geniuses in the music industry, both in the original music played and in the design or the equipment. Let us all recognize that a well meaning, hard working small town orchestra is well worth listening to, but Not the Same as the London Symphony Orchestra. The exact same awareness and appreciation must be applied to the incredible efforts of the engineers and manufacturers of fine components and speakers.
  3. I have been a seeker of accurate reproduction for 50 years, quite successfully... and I would say that your perspective is one of the better considered and well put overviews that I've heard or read. Perhaps in the near future I will produce my commentary on this same subject. At this time my reply is intended to support and reinforce your positioning, which you've shared so well.
  4. I do not see the brainstorming approach to commentary, which is encouraged by civil chat (or occasionally less-civil chat) as contradictory to or counter-productive to well thought out ''reasoned'' commentary. Let's have both available. Further... the ''reply'' option offered in many chats provides the opportunity, time-wise, to consider-in-depth and respond in a meaningful manner, whilst retaining the overview/integrity of the thread. I'd be very enthusiastic about pursuing the chat room idea.
