  1. I used squeezebox server and squeezelite on ubuntu. It's simple and works brilliantly for me. I've got the Qobuz plugin for steaming, BBC iPlayer for listening to Radio 3. MY music 'server' is running on an old net-top PC. I tried using a PI but there's simple not enough CPU cycles available for squeezelite. I've got an Ayre QB-9 plugged into the PC via USB 2.0 port. Squeezelite uses alsa usb out. My music library is NFS mounted onto the box. There's a great android app called 'squeezer' that controls the squeezebox.
  2. I've not attempted it. I've got another PC I use for running mpd that's connected to my DAC. I want to use the MAC to take over this function however. I might install virtualbox on the MAC and have a play.
  3. If you use a VPN proxy solution like hidemyass you can fake being the the US. Ariama's totally bizarre approach to location is infuriating and patronising to potential customers. Qobuz is a much better site. Its aimed at French users but you can pretend to be French and it works beautifully. Along with eclassical.com, its in the top tier of download sites. Qobuz is one of the few places (if not the only place) where you can get a selection of hirez Harmonia Mundi recordings. Passionato advertise lots of EMI recordings yet none ever appear in the search listings. Yet again, a site that is so out of touch with its customer base.
  4. mpd is a music server than can the compiled up to many targets including MAC OS. Its a very neat and simple solution to playing music, especially when there are so many mpd clients available. Linux doesn't install on the latest mac mini 2011 - at least there are only reports of problems and failed installations on the internet. Mpd installs with port or fink. Its a music server not a gui application like iTunes. That's the beauty of it - a simple client server architecture. I think mpd is the way forward especially for linux users.
  5. Can you get it with mpd ? That's what I am after. I know I could use decibel but that's not the point. If a track is 24/96 I want it to hit the DAC at that resolution and not be re-sampled by coreaudio. (That's what ASIO4ALL windows drivers do for you, and alsa on linux is easy to set up similarly).
  6. IS there an equivalent bit perfect ASIO type driver for MACOS that bypasses all the core audio stuff? I'm running mpd on a mac mini 2011 and was hoping to get it set up similarly to using linux / mpd /alsa which works really well. Having bought a mac on a whim I guess I should have got some kit that would run linux... don't try to install ubuntu on mac mini 2011 - it will brick it!
  7. Can anyone tell me why I loose sound to my DAC from Decibel when I connect to Mac Mini with RDP using iRAPP installed on MAC. iRAPP allows you to use windows "remote desktop" (RDP) protocol to connect to your desktop. I guess I should stick with VNC! But RDP is very nifty. Am running a new Mac mini with Lion. BTW has anyone experience of installing linux on MacMini? Heresy I know, but I am more of a linux person than MAC.
  8. Even the UK distributor for HM does seem to know the answer to this, but where can I buy and download Harmonia Mundi 24bit ? HM is my favourite independent music label and I can't wait get Herreweghe's Bach in 24bit. (And a huge stack of other baroque and early music recordings). Thankfully I can get BIS recordings from eclassical. Right now I think its the best of the hires sites for choice and quality. BIS record some of my favourite artists too so I'm relatively happy. HDtracks have a very few of their discs. I was emailing LSO live label manager attempting to persuade him to talk to eclassical or hdtracks. Hopefully something will come of it soon.
