  1. This is an old ad, but still live. Is the transport still available? What price are you now asking for it? Regards, Tim Glaesemann
  2. Here is the latest from Italy. Hard to believe a company can be so tone deaf. I'm done with them. Ciao! Hello, there's nothing to do Except using the new driver which we can't deliver at the moment. We hope to release it within this month. Kind regards, Marco Manunta M2Tech Srl Via Giuntini 13/L1 56021 Navacchio di Cascina (Pi) Italy
  3. Kind of embarrassing talking to myself. Thank you for all your input. :-) No worries, I shipped the Mac Mini back to Apple today and bought a new PS for the Power Mac G5.
  4. Experimenting with isolation and mass, the Mini has improved slightly. Still greatly lacking bass, focus and clarity. The presentation is distant, veiled and un-engaging. Though it doesn't sound terrible, it doesn't yet deliver an A class digital source experience like my stock Power Mac G5 has done for the past year. I'm very interested in hearing from owners who have monitored the Mini burning-in process and sound changes heard at each stage. I suspect there's a lot of improvement to be had in redoing the cheap switching power supply. I'd also love to hear your experiences upgrading the Mini's power supply.
  5. My Power Mac G5 power supply died (as is normal with these units). Instead of replacing it I thought I'd try a Mac Mini (2010). My hopes were that it would sound at least as good as the G5 with the added benefits of low heat, low fan noise and placement on rack. My old G5 was sounding really good. It replaced a CEC TL-1X as digital source. I haven't missed the CEC a bit. I've had very special listening sessions with the G5, especially on good electricity days. The results with the Mini have been less than positive. I've done all the usual tweaks and optimization scripts. It is optimized the same as the G5, but it simply does not sound as good. I can't get past the over all veiled presentation. Voices are recessed and veiled, stage is compressed, strings and cymbals are muted and ill defined. Over all it's lacking transparency. I'm looking for some feedback from others who have made this switch. I'm thinking it may be a simple break-in issue. Can anyone report that the Mini's sound better over time as they break-in? My experience is break-in usually results in better transparency and resolution. Or, maybe it's hardware. The power supply on the G5 is massive. Maybe it's the SATA bus or USB bus or space in the case. Or maybe with the heat wave the electricity sux (very possible). I'm interested in feedback and especially additional tweaks (battery power?) to get the most out of the Mini. TIA, - Tim
  6. Hi All, I'm trying to set up a system where a PC audio server streams the same signal to two sets of stereo desktop speakers. The two zones are workstations next to each other. Each workstation requires their own volume control. This makes my original design of a single sub with two pairs of Focal satellites awkward. So, I am leaning toward Quad 9L actives or Adam ARTist 3 active. They are much bigger than I'd like but there are few options without going to a sub. My issue is how to feed both pairs of speakers the same signal. I could use the balanced and unbalanced analog outputs from a DAC Magic. But since the Quad 9L and Adam ARTist 3 have built-in DACs it would be great if there was a way for the PC to feed the DACs simultaneously. If the built-in DACs really sucked (as I suspect they will) then I would pop for an external DAC with two analog outputs. But it's worth giving the built-ins a try first. Is it possible to play iTunes/Amarra to two USB devices? TIA
  7. Not sure where I got it in my mind that Amarra only ran on Intel machines, but I'm glad to hear I'm wrong. I set up the G5 and Xserve Raid last evening and so far the results are promising.
  8. I think this would have been better posted to Music Servers. Please move if you agree.
  9. I brought home a decommissioned Xserve Raid (aching back) from my office. While laying out the network and cabling I started thinking about maybe allocating one of my old PowerMac G5 11,2 units as a dedicated head unit for serving media from the Raid. The 11,2 boxes are the only G5's with PCI Express. Then I wouldn't have to mess with my main home Mac Pro which I use for a lot of photo, video and music editing. I like the idea of streamlining a dedicated unit and sticking it in a closet. Aside from Amarra can anyone think of reasons why a G5 with PCI Express could not perform as well as a Mac Pro? I think the combination is interesting mostly from a cost perspective. You can now buy an Apple Xserve for under $300 depending on capacity. A G5 Dual Core Mac goes for around $250. The total is only $500ish for an Apple Raid media server that can be expanded to over 10TB. People are spending that on used Mac Mini's!
  10. I was concerned about latency issues. What Raid config are you using?
  11. I can decommission an Apple Xserve Raid from my office to bring home. Any opinions on using as audio server? I'm connecting via 2G fiber channel to Mac Pro.
