1. Jason Stoddard (Schiit co-founder) always said that most of your money should go into your transducers. "electronics should cost less than the speakers, because you really should put most of your money in the transducers" "And this is the way it should be—most of your money should go into the transducer." Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up - Page 744
 2. You have no idea how old I am, and guess what, I am much older than you think. I guess you are like a grumpy old man who asks a question, and instead of thanking anyone who took the time answering, and instead of reading what they have to say, you yell them with your caps lock on. Just read your last sentence out loud... Once again, upgrading your budget headphones will improve your sound quality far more than upgrading your already decent electronics.
 3. Don't invest in more electronics for these headphones. The HD 598 is a Sennheiser "value" product. Take a look at their audiophile headphones first or research other brands offerings that are far better than those 598s. Schiit themselves also recommend investing in better tranducers instead of trying to fix deficiencies in transducers with expensive DACs and amplification. I apologize in advance if you think I had no business replying to your question.
 4. I don't think spending $300 on a HD-600 cable makes sense. The HD-650 has more bass, upgrade to that if you really need more bass. I have used HD-600s for a decade, with stock and upgraded cables (Stefan Audioart Equinox) and the differences are subtle. I used a HD-650 for a month, but couldn't get used to the muddied bass. It was OK on pop, but was bad with acoustic jazz and classical. I got a HD-700, and I love it. This is what the HD-650 should have been. It's a different class. Now I understand what the "Sennheiser veil" was on the HD-600 that others used to complain about. The HD-700 has much deeper bass, and it's controlled. Much more trebble, more detail, more air, more comfortable, easier to drive. It's an awesome deal at current prices. Since I got the HD-700 in December, it turned me to listening to music every day. It never gets tiring. I use a Meridian Explorer. Great pairing, much better than my Dragonfly was. I Auditioned the HD-800 on CanJam SoCal last weekend, but it was a bit too detailed, too analytic for me to get lost in the music.
 5. Thanks for the tutorial!

What's the benefit of AIFF vs. ALAC? The ALAC files seem to end up to be smaller from the same FLAC files.

I converted some HDtracks files to ALAC, and iTunes could stream it to Apple TV. I did not know iTunes could do that. Is it downconverting the sampling rate and/or bit depth?
 6. Great product!

This is exactly the type of amplifier I will be looking for once AirPlay gets supported. It will open up the possibilities to many people who want to use iTunes to manage their music. Hopefully Apple will support high resolution audio soon.
