  1. I remember reading Mick Jagger talking about this, but can't find it googling... In my memory, Mick said there has never been much money in royalties. You earn it touring. I sympathize with musicians, but Bryne was right, "Same as it ever was" while karate chopping his arm. This is a harsh reality, but certainly better than than medieval times when traveling troupes were experts in swordsmanship because the alternative was being butchered on the road anonymously and sold as pork meat in the local market. Thankx for CA Chris, Augsburg grad, living in Jackson Hole
  2. Thankx for the article, Chris. A looooong time ago, when NAS (Network Attached Storage) was pretty new, I bought a Bufalo Terastation. I slept well at night knowing that when a hard drive died I could simply swap in a replacement. I also knew as time went on and memory became cheaper I could even swap in larger drives. What could go wrong? This worked well for years, and then it occurred... "The Day the Music Died"... All files became a scrambled mess. Nothing was playable. Bufalo support told me this was due to a "software problem", and all information was irretrievably lost. They did tell me new product has "fixed" that problem. No thankx. I've spent oodles of time re-downloading music into a simple external hard drive which recently failed. Luckily, it was the "box software" that can be replaced (& not the disk itself which I "kept promising myself" to backup "soon". I'll never depend on NAS redundancy to protect files again (altho why not have a stack of drives with huge storage)? Thankx to this article I'll be storing (but not playing) music on either Google or Amazon. Happy Trails!
  3. I'm leaving Tidal. Just cancelled my subscription, which runs through January. I'm a bit torn, but recently retired and $ has become more important to me. I now compare CD, Tidal and Spotify. SQ of Tidal? Just compared "Almost Like the Blues" from Leonard Cohen's new "Popular Problems". My CD is minutely better than Tidal (perhaps not). Although more complex orchestral pieces would be interesting to compare, I'm not going to do that audition today. Or "Dark Side of the Moon". I'm recovering from a broken ankle and exhausted. Tidal? Close to the CD. Amazing when you consider how far the music traveled through gawd knows how many relays and servers. Spotify Premium? Not even close to Tidal. I can everyday live with this difference as most listening is done uncritically from an adjacent room. How can some posters here prefer Spotify? My guess is that not all of Tidal's music is truly lossless streaming, even if "HIFI" is lit up. Bottom line, I'd pony up the extra $ if Tidal had a much larger catalogue of music. I hope to return some day. Happy Holidays!
  4. Close, but not completely correct. Don't "go to playlist and look in the right column." DO go to "My Playlists" and look in the right column. You then are then given the choice to "import any Spotify playlist to TIDAL" Only Spotify is currently given this option but I suspect things will change. I didn't know this option was available until now. Thankx for pointing it out. I'll demo it shortly. Sorry Spotify, I've got a new lover!
  5. Sorry for the delay in responding. You're over my head here. Tell me what to search and play via"ECM content" and I'll do my best. Email me at Mountain Sufi AT gmail etc. I've been on vaca, and very busy elsewhere. Now listening to Pink Floyd's new "The Endless River" via high end setup... Avantegarde Uno Nano speakers. Wavelength Audio amp and DAC. Not bragging, but saying it's top drawer shite. Tidal sound is very good, definitely worth the $20/month over Spotify premium. BUT, somethings missing. Sounds a bit thin. Bass, lower end, doesn't grab my testicles and shake my soul. Haven't done A/B comparisons with CD's yet. Bottom line, while Tidal may not be the quintessence of sound (yet), it makes Spotify sound like listening to a Victrola.
  6. Tidal will have a HUGE inventory of music: HFA Hey kidz, it seems likely this will force Spotify to offer a truly HiFi streaming alternative!
  7. Yes, multiple albums by both. And what appears to be everything done by Leonard Cohen. And Rolling Stones remasters. Dig it, even Radiohead. It appears finicky artists will stream with high audio quality.
  8. I got an offer of 30 day trial, because I had expressed "early interest" in their product... Can't remember, but I must have clicked on an early article about them. I got lucky, you didn't. It's scant loss; you'll want to subscribe either way.
  9. Howdy! I have a WaveLength DAC, and couldn't get HIFI option to play. Went in and changed it to "HIGH" audio quality, which is now playing and sounding really sweet. To the right of the bottom bar it now sez regardless "HIFI". They've got bugs in their system. I'm # 444 in their problem resolution que.
  10. Howdy from Jackson Hole! Use PayPal whenever possible!!! I tried purchasing an album, figuring HD Tracks has to be good because they have had so much visibility on the web for years. Wrong. I was only able to download 3 of 5 songs, despite repeated tries. I hated the download manager and found it got in the way of what I wanted to do. HD Tracks gave me advice that was waaaay to arcane for this boy to easily follow. I've got a Mac to boot, which is more prone to problems. I requested a refund from them through PayPal, which they refused. Then I filed an official dispute, in which PayPal asked for documentation. DIG THIS!!! I googled "HD Tracks Problems Downloading" and ended up here. For documentation I included the URL to this discussion list. Told them to read it and find many others unhappy with HD Tracks, and that the people at Computer Audiophile are far geekier than I'll ever be. I explained several people with complaints similar to mine have been granted refunds, and that if PayPal didn't back me up, I'm sure AmEx would. PayPal came through and supported me. Refund Bingo! I'm sure many here have genuinely had no problems with HD Tracks. Nonetheless, I will say to any HD Tracks employees on this list pretending to be happy customers: Stop wasting your time here and spend it developing better product Happy Trails!
  11. Yo-Yo Ma does a lot of cutting edge cello. You MUST get "Hush" with Bobby McFerrin: http://www.amazon.com/Yo-Yo-Ma-Bobby-McFerrin-Hush/dp/B0000027VR It even as a few bars of Purple Haze. All in fun. You'll enjoy other Yo-Yo Ma things. Need suggestions? Go back to the Amazon link above, & scroll down to "Customers who bought this selection also bought" Happy Trails! MountainSufi
