  1. Thanks so much for your reply, very infomative and appreciated. You mention the UI is basic and that should fit my needs also as my system is stricly audio. I have a fairly large music collection and assume the path I use will work with this setup, it is artist/album or artist/year/album or show. You didn't mention cover art, does that work well? Also it would be great to hear your thoughts on the Auraliti once you have time to form an opinion. Many Thanks!
  2. I'm planning to retire my laptop to be replaced by the Auraliti PK100 or L1000 and plan to use either an I Pad or Galaxy Tab as the controller. Suggestions, on controllers from those of you that have first hand knowledge and experience using them with one of the Auraliti products would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Thanks jtwrace. It's the same OWC enclosure I'm about to order but the 1.5TB drive you have in it is a Seagate Barracuda. Here is a link that was found within the link you offered earlier. http://eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/se3st31500341as.html Again, thanks to all for their recommendations.
  4. Like I said digital audio and all that goes with it is new to me but jtwrace, your comment confuses me a little. I didn't realize that the enclosure had any type motor that spun the hard drive. I was thinking the hard drive spun itself. So is it the enclosure is noisy or is it the hard drive, please explain. Also would you share what type drive you use in the OWC? Like I said, I have a lot to learn. Thanks for your comments.
  5. You are correct Darrell, and thanks for your input. I'm a novice on the digital movement but have been doing quite a bit of research. The DataTale or at least the one I was looking at does not contain the Oxford chip, however the OWC Elite - Al Pro does. At this point, based on what I have read, the Oxford chip is highly regarded by the computer audio world. I don't know if it is any better than the Jmicron chip or completly understand what the difference is, but for now plan to go with the enclosure containing the Oxford chip. This adventure certainly isn't plug and play but I guess if you put in the effort you get an education and maybe storage and access to your audio library from a little box. Appreciate your input as well as this great website.
  6. Haven't considered noise but now that it is on the radar screen I will, thanks again. Appreciate the link on the Samsung drive and will check it out. Since I'm going to consider the external harddrive part of my audio system, it would be foolish to cheap out on drives when you have thousands of dollars invested on the audio side. By the way, the Deckstar 7K3000 comes 3TB, 2TB and 1.5TB. Here is a link if interested: http://www.hitachigst.com/internal-drives/desktop/deskstar/deskstar-7k3000 Again, thanks for your help.
  7. Thanks bixby, this is my first stab at digital. I've been sitting on the sidelines, reading, researching, and changing my mind. Was very close to going with a NAS but recently decided things are complicated enough, keep it simple. The 2TB OWC is using a Hitachi Deckstar 7k3000, I have no idea if that is a good hardrive or not but assume it is and it carries the same 3 year warranty as the enclosure. You mentioned you used Samsung Spinpoints, any particular reason why? Do you or others have opinions on the Hitachi drive that comes in the pre-packaged setup i'm looking at, is there other more dependable and quiter drives to look at because i could always just buy the enclosure. Again thanks for your reply, its appreciated.
  8. Curious if others have any experience with these external hard drives they would share. My plan is to keep it simple, using one external as a main storage drive and another as a backup. Either the Oyen DataTale 3.5" 2TB or the OWC Mercury Elite Pro-AL Pro 2TB. Right now i'm leaning toward the OWC because they have a metal case and use the Oxford chip. Would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks
  9. Let me start off by saying thanks in advance for your recommendations. I decided to go 100% digital and I'm not a computer wiz. After much research I've become very frustrated, I think I'm on the right track only to read something that gives me doubts, without the expertise I begin to question my path. So I'll lay out what I want to do and rely on you to design my system. What I'm thinking is NAS to squeezebox to McIntosh DAC to remaining McIntosh gear. The system will be used as a music server only. Wanting a NAS running headless. Need four or five bays worth of hardrive space. Prefer Flac files Think J Rivers will be used for playback/management but open to recommendations. Would like to go wireless by using a squeezebox touch. Remote operation using a I-pad or equal. System must be capable of 24/96. I have several laptops running Windows for transfer of data to NAS. I will be using a McIntosh DAC with Coxial and optical inputs. I would like titles of tracks to show up on the remote controller. Set-up needs to be relatively simple or at least once set not requiring continuious tinkering. The system needs to sound good. I was just about to pull the trigger on a new HP EX495, partly because I thought it would do what I wanted and also because I could get a very good deal on it. But I just read that HP is discontinuing that series of home media servers. So given my desires what would you purchase? Which NAS, which playback/management system, a squeezebox or other solution, which remote, which cables and anything else i would need to make your system work. Again, I know I'm asking for a lot and there are no 100% right answers but I'm hoping your guess is better than mine. Thanks, and the winner gets a six pack and a slab of ribs.
