  1. Hi, I need advise as to the best way to connect my hifi to a computer / music server and control it using a tablet. Ive got a naim dac, and plan on using a usb to sdif converter to connect to a computer. But whats the best way to select music, is there a dedicated app, that can be used. I dont really like the idea of running a remote computer app. I know I could buy a dedicated streamer, but i want to try out room correction software, in the future. Any thoughts / advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
  2. All - The petition letter has now been revised. Let me know what you think, ideally through the facebook group. Please try not to burn me at the stake if there are grammar errors! Thanks http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-the-loudness-wars-and-release-high-definition-music-downloads P.S – 858 signatures now – carry on spreading the word. If you haven’t already signed, please do so.
  3. Fair enough. Though, I do not believe that 24Bit audio is a marketing tool. Studio's use it for a reason, mainly because it has a lot lower noise floor. I have heard the same music in both 16Bit and 24Bit and there is no doubt that the 24Bit sounds better. If record labels released 24Bit material of old albums, I would buy them and I'm sure many others would, provided that they have not been compressed and other better quality. 4. I have been asked by a few people what my objective is with the petition and what I’m I going to do with it, for clarification my broad intentions are below. Bear in mind, it’s still very early days, which is why I intent to use the facebook group as a place to take on board peoples suggestions and advice. Objective: To raise the issue of compression and availability of high quality downloads with major record labels and online retailers When: Once I / others (facebook group) believe that the petition has reached its peak, or has reached a number that I believe would warrant notice, ideally between 2000 – 3000 people. How: By letter to each of the major record labels and online retailers. The letter would bring to their attention the petition and ask them to take into consideration our views and ask them for comments (future plans etc). I plan on using the facebook group to communicate draft versions of any final letter, to accompany the petition letter for people to comment on and who to write to. I will them email all those who signed the petition before it gets sent for comment.
  5. UPDATE: After listening to the peoples comments on various forums the petition title has been changed to: “Stop the loudness wars and release High Definition Music Downloads” Petition Link: Petition | Stop the loudness wars and release High Definition Music Downloads | Change.org Facebook Group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/463034807076103/ I had emailed all those who signed the petition for comment before doing so. Please note that while many would like to see a fundamental change within the industry so that no record is heavily compressed, this is not realistic as no doubt the record labels / retailers would argue that many people prefer the music “louder” (Even though we may fundamentally disagree). Instead the petition focus would be for record labels and retailers to offer uncompressed downloads alongside the “mainstream offering” in the download market in both 16 Bit & 24 Bit format. It’s not realistic to expect an uncompressed CD to be brought to market alongside the “normal” version. My personal opinion is that if a new product market is created the focus should be on 24 Bit downloads and advertised as “the best”, as even modestly priced equipment is able to playback 24 Bit files and it’s also important for the industry to move forward. If you agree and haven’t already done so, please sign the petition and ask your friends to do so too. If change is ever going to happen then we need people’s participation. Thanks
  6. The spelling error has now been corrected! Guys, if everyone who read this topic, we'd get a lot further. I've posted on a few other forums, but the whole point is to get better quality recordings of music that people actually like to listen to!
  7. Hi, Thanks for posting the link, I started the petition and would have posted here, but couldnt remember my password! Direct link here: Petition | Record Lables: Release High Definition music downloads | Change.org
  8. If your VLink has an optical output, then you have got the Vlink II http://www.musicalfidelity.com/products/V-Series/V-LINK/v-link.asp There are now two V-link products, the V-link II and the V-Link 192 http://www.musicalfidelity.com/products/V-Series/V-LINK-192/v-link-192.asp I dont think the V-link 192 has been launched yet (not in the UK anyway). Its still good to know, the new model sounds better anyway.
  9. Mitch, How did you connect the original VLink? if it was via the SPDIF, then one of the reasons why it is sounding better, if because the VLink192 offers "galvanically isolated" outputs, which has something to do, with preventing the dirty power / signal from the PC entering your hifi.
  10. stuipid question, but If I bought a PS3 that outputs highres audio, how would I record it, and transfer it to HDD? would I need a decent PC with a recording soundcard? or would I have to use it as a dedicated player?
  11. I'd also make sure you audition a naim dac. Its retails in the uk for £2000. Not sure how much it goes for in America.
  12. That box set isnt all of the titles available on the Living Stereo lable. Did you mean, you have been looking for legal copies? I've seen a few illegal download links for that box set, but personally I dont see the point, as it would just be standard 16/44Khz, most of them are heavly compressed anyway. I think the offical Living stereo SACD website has been dropped too, so doesnt look as if there much hope of them being reissued as downloads in the near future.
  13. Hi, Does anyone know if it is possible to download any of RCA Living Stereo records in high resolution, if so where? I have quite a few of the SACD releases, except I dont have a SACD player. IMO, they are of very good quality. I've listen to modern high def. 24bit/384kHz of the same material, which sound very clean and detailed, but IMO the Living Stereo recordings are better, they have more body to them and are no less detailed. The SACD layer has a high res file on there, so its only a matter of time, before it becomes available to download. Any help would be great. Thanks
  14. Technical data will only tell you so much. I'm more interested in what other people#s experiences have been, and if they have tried it themselves and what thier experience has been.
  15. Hi, I have posted this on the naim forum, to little response, so I thought it might interest more people here. Basically, I got a Naim Dac, and decided to download some high res 24bit 352Khz files, onto memory stick, to see what they sound like. I bought two memory sticks, TDK and a Sandisk one, and for some strange reason the same files (originally) sounded a lot better on the TDK stick. In comparison the other stick, was more grainy, less detailed and less dynamic. So I decided to format the Sandisk stick, using windows 7, to FAT 32. First I formated the drive so that each section size would be 2048 bytes. (It basically means, that is the minimum size of memory used per file. I did this, downloaded a track, and the music was all stuttery and awful. It sounded as if you could hear the dac, access each section / pack of data. So I decided to have another go, except this time, I increased the minimum allocation size to the maximum option size of 64 kilobytes. What a difference! I cannot tell you what a difference this has made. The music on the Sandisk stick, is now a lot better than the TDK stick, which I thought was really good in the first place. I've heard a few people say that solid state memory sounds better than HDD, whether they are referring to where the music is stored or the operating system, with music on HDD I dont know. Anyway, I just thought, if the allocation size, can make a difference to SSD, would it have a similar effect on HDD? If you've got a memory stick and havent tried it, give it a go, I'd like to know if anyone else experiences the same.
