  1. I experienced a little hiccup with the upgrade. EC would not recognize my USB DAC when Yosemite had. A few restarts and unplugging/plugging back in and it's back but still keeping my eye on Audio MIDI Setup...keeps changing format setting.
  2. I was thinking about an Apple comparison too...almost even included the comparison in my first post. But after thinking about it I concluded that Apple's business model is different in that, while yes, they rely on convincing people to upgrade, there is usually an incremental release of performance and more importantly features that are planned and executed on devices that are very complex in what they do. And in a controlled ecosystem. LH Labs, on the other hand, is in the business of audio equipment--not full featured operating systems and devices with complicated interoperability (arguably...no not arguably), even if LH Labs would like their consumers to buy into thinking so. The last thing high end audio needs is someone trying to create an ecosystem. For the most part, any DAC should work regardless of what amp you use. In fact, any departure from plain interoperability would be ridiculous and ultimately I believe the audio marketplace would take care of such a model. And trust me LH Labs is not Apple. What LH Labs did is convince a group of investors to lay money down on a promise. And they could have delivered on that promise if they chose to but instead got greedy and started conceiving ways to socially engineer techniques to get their investors to give more...for the exact same promise! It was ridiculous! And trust me LH Labs doesn't see it that way while a very large number of very pissed off investors do! Back to delivering on their promise: more evidence that they took the route of greed. After receiving millions from investors for one and only one product, the Pulse, they saw dollar signs and reminded everyone that there are no refunds. Since the money was already captured they proceeded to try to repeat the success of the Pulse campaign and released new concept product after new concept product to capture more money. And without actually delivering any product! What do you think happened to the first project, Pulse? That's right...back burner. After all, that money was already captured and no refunds because refunds were "out of their hands." They came up with excuse after excuse about board delays, bad batches of this and that...and even if you believe them or even if all thousand delays were actually true it has been nothing less than a PR disaster for them. It's as if they refused to see how what they were doing looked to all their customers. I, personally, don't get how they couldn't see it and how they couldn't anticipate that some of us would become vocal about it. That means to me it was a conscious decision on their part. I love computer audio and I really enjoy this community. Therefore, I feel compelled to share with fellow forum members this possible cautionary tale. LH Labs is not the real deal. Many out there feel they broke a promise and it stands to reason that if they've done it once (twice...about a dozen times really), then regardless of whether or not they have a problem breaking promises at all, they will do it. What other shortcuts are these guys doing? I wouldn't believe half the stuff that comes out of Gavin's mouth or even half of the measurements they "claim."
  3. Oh...and no, I still haven't received it. It would have to be significantly better (and I mean significantly) than any other offerings from their competitors before I would ever consider buying anything from them again.
  4. I get you saying you're going to forego rehashing the "curb stomping," but I am sorry: I have got to say how displeased I am with LH Labs. This will be the second time today I've posted (both times about LH Labs) and I hardly ever post unless it is something related to the minutiae of the mathematics behind digital audio. Anyway, LH Labs has lost my respect through the way they've treated their customers; I don't care what anyone says but I think contributors are customers and how they are treated ultimately reflects the philosophy and culture of a company. I mainly hold Gavin responsible for LH Labs blatant greed and quasi-"social engineering"-like marketing (don't know how to describe it). I watched with dismay over the last two years while these guys promised one thing and then tried to milk their contributors out of just a little bit more and still a little more just to get them to upgrade to what many thought they were getting in the first place. Incredibly, lots were biting too! I contributed for an Xfi over 18 months ago and I'm glad I read that Gavin guy right right from the start and didn't send LH Labs one dime more. Real dirtbag type no matter how one justifies the business of making money.
  5. Huh...I can't remember the last time I've posted. It's certainly been a while. I often visit here but rarely post. That Gavin guy must really burn me up.
  6. Me personally, I'm not very happy with the company behind Geek products, LH Labs. This is just one data point for you, but I personally feel that the way they have handled the development of the entire Geek line has left much, much to be desired. This is probably the first time I have ever said anything so directly against a company self-professed to be into such cool and geeky products (maybe against isn't quite the right word) but I feel compelled to say something as I really think they're way more into hype and marketing. Maybe marketing isn't quite the right word either...maybe social engineering? That's too strong too but something at LH Labs just doesn't sit well with me. Larry seems to know his stuff but maybe it's that Gavin guy there that is the real turn off...classic BSer imho (don't take that as an ad hominem...just the fastest way to sum up my feelings). Anyone familiar with LH Labs' Geek Kickstarter or IndieGoGo campaigns will probably know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I personally will not be buying anything from them ever again on principle.
  7. There must be some universal law out there (meaning one named eponymously like Godwin's law or Murphy's law) saying that given access to your home workers will damage something every time.
  8. The Geek Soul upgrade has been selling out very quickly. I was watching on Indiegogo the moment the first round of units were made available and they (30 units) sold out in minutes. It seems like an interesting product. But, it is being sold at a significant increase in price compared to the original campaign prices for the Pulse X and Xfi. For instance, iirc the Pulse Xfi was originally offered at about $600. Then for a more direct comparison to the Soul Xfi you need to combine an LPS offered originally at about $300 to the Pulse Xfi for a grand total of $900. However, Light Harmonic is offering 120% of your campaign backing as trade in towards this upgrade perk. So, now you have about $1080 in credit towards your Soul upgrade. The Soul Xfi is being offered at $1700 for a difference of about $600. What exactly does this $600 buy you? A nice (arguable) T6061 chassis? Ok. What else? Bipolar power circuit? Ok. But everything else is supposed to be nearly identical since parts are to be essentially shared across products like between a Toyota Camry and a Lexus ES. The Camry/ES comparison admittedly isn't a very good analogy in this case since there are many, many more cosmetic parts on a car, both interior and exterior, that can affect a buyer's sensibilities than there are on a piece of audio equipment. That and Lexus offers a better warranty helping to justify a premium for what is essentially the same car whereas the Pulse and Soul have the same warranty offering.
  9. This discussion seems to have taken quite a philosophical turn. It reminds me of Plato and the notion of perfect forms. The example I remember is that of a perfect circle: No one has ever seen a perfect circle, yet everyone knows what a perfect circle is. Or you could substitute something else into the argument such as a straight line or even a "perfect recording." A perfect recording can never exist...or can it if I can imagine it? And if I can imagine that then I can imagine a perfect reproduction of that perfect recording. While I may not be able to attain perfection, the sheer notion of the natural form of the perfect recording/reproduction chain directs me towards it. (tongue in cheek)
  10. How did you get it working again? I'm not using Trim Enabler like proftournesol but the typical Terminal commands I have used in the past no longer work. I also tried disabling kext signing (sudo nvram boot-arg="kext-dev-mode=1") before making the changes to the kernel extension that affects SSD TRIM support but just ended up not being able to boot. Had to restore from backup and reinstall Yosemite.
  11. I'm listening to a Dragonfly 1.2 right now through Yosemite. I'm not experiencing any significant change to its operation as compared on 10.9.5, if that helps. Just heard a slight click but very minor. I'll replay the song...nope it's gone. (Using Audirvana+ 1.5.12)
  12. As another data point, my boot time has doubled. With 10.9.5 Mavericks ~9 sec With 10.10 Yosemite ~18 sec
  13. Not to stray too far off topic, but do you happen to know names of any of those "accuracy" labels offhand? I thought Blue Coast was one of them. I do get the creative art form argument for the use of tape...but I've heard it invoked for the use of auto tuning too (both valid, of course). I just prefer old-fashioned natural voices and natural mechanical instruments and want to find those labels that record such as faithfully as possible since I absolutely don't want artistic "coloration" (although artistic mic placement, performer placement, etc. to emphasize a particular artistic point is welcomed).
  14. I guess I'm becoming a bit of a jack of all trades
  15. Right, NAT. I have a CCNA and am used to Cisco switches that support NAT but I see what you're doing now.
