  1. With all that $$$ cash, it's more likely that Apple will simply buy HDtracks. Even though one could ask: what for? Doubt it has anything to do with Apple
  2. Eloise, The advent of async USB is here so as to avoid purchasing expensive & very expensive usb cables. Any cheapo usb will do as soon as it relies within specs. This is mentioned in their site and obviously applies for MF and usb async in general. My guess is, that all async usb converters should function the same. After all they just try to remove jitter. However, if one uses the v-link's optical output, I suspect that there is no jitter removal. Only galvanic isolation. So with the vlink, its either min jitter OR isolation. With the Halide its min jitter AND isolation minus some $$$ Can someone confirm this please?
  3. MF should have made their marketing campaign a tad more elegantly. It's not what they say, but what they(imply) don't : "There are other products on the market which have similar functionality but, unless you spend big money on Ayre or other similar products, they do not work consistently, reliably or in some cases properly." Of course they praise Ayre, but Ayre's products is not their competitor here, while Halide is. Anyway the thing is, that for $200 less basically you get an async usb converter that doesn't offer galvanic isolation and -maybe- needs yet another external power brick. The halide on the other hand for these $200 offers extreme simplicity, is compact, isolates the PC and needs no extra power (it's plug and play). Unless vlink is some sort of a miracle, for me the halide would be a no brainer here. But I don't like the way MF markets some of its products like the vlink and its DAC
  4. Given itunes version history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history, itunes 11 is already late, like 4-5 months late. Maybe something big is brewing. Let's just hope it's audiophile downloads. Just CD format downloads -although a step ahead- won't cut it, because all this time we've been told that aac+ format is like listening to CDs. This will eventually change a lot in the music industry... Also, expect Jobs to break molds like files at 64/3Ghz some try to sell that should be fun to watch
  5. Well, she or better, her husband that bashes Apple like this can try contacting PC genius if Apple Genius doesn't solve the matter, can't he?
  6. Nice site, there is an option for english language too, and as I suspected it runs in HTML5. That means you get exactly what you see in your computer monitor in the small screen of an iphone! Amazing!
  7. Nebear, I have answered to your original post, giving you the idea of getting that laptop of yours and checking your issues with itunes with a genius in any apple store genius bar. Im sure the guys in there will solve that issue
  8. Ok I have tested latest patch with several Dacs, and latest test was with a 2GB old mini with the halide bridge. All previous stuttering -if it existed- is now gone, forced to play a 24/96 file using both apple core sound and the other one both at max oversampling, integer on, best quality. No problems at all and it seems that files now load like 2x faster. Is that normal? Before the patch, checking the max oversampling was producing cpu overtimes, now this has gone. Is that normal? It has like itunes stability on my limited mini but is blazing fast and plays natively flac files!
  9. Yes, because you are running Audirvana into exclusive access mode. When you do so, it uses itunes as a library management db only. But if you uncheck exclusive mode, then you also have full control of itunes as well as Audirvana (you can play using both players, even at the same time!) edit: playing together makes for some fun mess with echo lol, but actually you don't need itunes when you run audirvana, so exclusive mode is the way. Very nice changes btw with this patch
  10. In my personal view, the gap from 16/44 to 24/96 is currently huge. And sadly what is worst, is that it wont guarantee a better recording, just a marginally better sound using better technology, original recording still rules over sound quality/atmosphere. Logistic wise, high definition files do not present a burden for companies that they do sell files, therefore charging almost twice and paying for a premium that simply is not existant is -for me- bad marketing. Compare for instance, Linn Recordings against Society of Sound. How come P.Gabriel & co. be able to sustain the SAME price for 16/44.1 & 24/44.1 or even 24/48? They work for fun? I mean if you come thinking of this, its like paying for better CD plastic quality or the best printing of its sleeve, using press technology on an old Guttemberg pressing machine... This is ridiculous: they sell music not technology. As far as I am concerned, they can burry 24/196/38... most of DACs dont even support them let alone music fidelity. I am expecting all this to change for the better, whenever Steve Jobs decides to step in and fix the landscape.
  11. Ok, there is something buggy going on with this version that needs immediate attention: The first time you try to play a song, you get wrong frequency (from 44.1->33) if you open midi audio you will witness the change. If you play this song again it will play in the correct frequency setting! From there on it alternates from correct to something else each time you press play button. Basically you have to play-stop-play to play correctly Nice changes and development but this needs a quick update. I also noticed a bug in channels too: one .mp3 file played with only one channel(it was a podcast) but could not replicate this with other mp3s from itunes library
  12. Also, if you happen to own an iphone/ipod you can now stream DIRECTLY all your music (WITH coverflow) to your AE without having to use your laptop! All with wifi and same sound quality as your laptop
  13. ok Here is the idea: Forget about the AE for the moment, and take your laptop that actually has the problem with workflow, and show it to one of the myriad apple shops to a genius bar rep. You can even close an appointment for this. You can't expect to get decent help for this kind of stuff just by calling some support guy. Genius bar is there exactly for this. Now when they see the windowz laptop they might lose their color, but you should insist for support in itunes. As for your husband about Apple products, he has to calm down a bit about Apple. It is not by luck that it is #1 tech firm maybe soon to be #1 company in the US/world. While you are at the genius bar, take a look at OS computers there, play a bit, there is nothing like OSX, plus with Apple you can have both worlds as windows are compatible and run in native mode!
  14. Also, after you have created libraries in various places, you can select which one to use by pressing alt and click itunes program. This will tell the program to ask you which library to load and from where, or start a new one
  15. You can put the mini to sleep. When you do that, and since the mini is already a very eco friendy computer (when in sleep < than a watt) it will wake in something like a sec. You need Snow Leopard on it and you are done. I can confirm that an iphone+ AE+ your dac work alone yes. And so does the iPad(Guess), but I don't own an iPad. The sound coming from an AE is always 16/44.1 as this is the AE's spec. However when you are on your PC or mini you can use anything with greater resolution. Which is better of course. If you can find a place for a small mac mini then usb is superior to any AE and wireless streaming. However, on the other hand, iphone/ipad wireless streaming is much much more practical, convenient. I would chose both methods. As you/I are both learning the ropes, I would suggest to stay away from expensive power cables that supposedly "expand soundstage and make bass tighter...", funnily there is such a thread about changing the power lead on the mac mini... and other such vapors, keep your budget down and invest in music instead. Oh, and subscribe to society of music
