  1. I did figure out that I was connecting to the HAPZ wirelessly.....and have subsequently correctly set it up to connect via wired ethernet connection. My MAC is saying that my "link speed" is 1GB/s! Unfortunately, the HAPZ is still plugging along. Just timed the transfer rate; it's 6-7 songs/minute. That will be around 29 hours for my entire library of 12,500 songs (500GB). Man, that's SLOW!! Another question. Does anyone have experience with how long it takes for the database to update? And, while the HAPZ is updating the database, will I see changes to the number of tracks available via the HDD app? So far, even though I've transferred about 4000 tracks to the HAPZ, I can only access 657 of them. Have to admit, like other's have suggested, this part of the software is a massive weak link for Sony. Thoughts??
  2. I have started the transfer process via HAP Music Transfer. I have physically connected the HAP to my iMac via Ethernet.....but I'm not actually sure that the Sony is running off of the Ethernet connection. When I first tried to set it up, I selected "wired" connection, and it wouldn't work. I switched to "wireless" connection and was able to see and connect to my wireless network. When I check network settings on my Mac, it shows a message "Self-assigned IP". FYI, my iMac is connected wirelessly to my network. I am transferring the high rez music from the internal hard drive of my iMac to the Sony. As many have stated, it's taking a LONG time.......I've got about 115GB and so far it's taken around 9 hours for around 75GB of the total. I have tried dragging and dropping files onto the HAPZ. The issue is that the file seems to load, then I get an error message saying that the "file is in use." Finally, I have been tracking the progress of downloads into the HAP via the finder window. A couple of albums have failed to load ONE song out of many. How would I go about fixing this? Why is this happening? Any comments/suggestions for what I'm doing wrong (or not) and how to proceed correctly would be appreciated. Thanks.
  3. Thank you SO much. Awesome info. My Sony arrives tomorrow afternoon. Can hardly wait to get started!!
  4. After much deliberation, I am bailing on my DAC set-up and switching to the Sony HAPZ. I heard it at the CA Audio Show this past weekend, and after listening for quite a while, and talking with the reps (and reading this thread), I decided to take the plunge. Should be here later this week. A few questions though: I've got my music files in an iTunes library stored on an external HD attached to my iMac. These files are a mix of AIFF and ALAC, with a few residual MP3's (old files) mixed in. I also have a few hundred HD files on my iMac's internal HD. 1) Should I bother changing the ALAC files to AIFF.....or just keep as is? 2) Will I be able to point the Sony to the different locations where my music is stored? 3) Should I actually physically connect the Sony to my iMac via Ethernet to transfer files initially? 4) Should I transfer batches of files, or just set it up to happen all at once? 5) Not entirely clear about how, after the initial (large) file transfer is complete, when I add new music, how do I go about making sure that a copy of it gets onto the Sony? (seems like there's some auto sync option, but I'm not clear about this). Since I'm starting from scratch, any best practices advice you can offer? Thanks in advance, Matt
  5. Very interesting Tranz....this fits into some feedback I got today at the California Audio Show. The two leading contenders to explain the situation were: USB at fault (similar to what you stated above), the Ayre DAC doesn't live up to it's reputation. A local audiophile kindly agreed to loan me another DAC next week, so I'll start there and see what happens. Thanks for the feedback.
  6. Great offer Dave, thanks :-) I know it sounds like I'm an idiot, but I actually have a good ear, and classical training in piano. I am completely surprised by what I'm hearing - I did NOT expect or want this to happen - and am looking for some explanation(s).
  7. OK, fair question. I am comparing the AE plugged directly into my Coda integrated with streaming files (wirelessly) from my iMac versus 2 separate signal paths: 1) HD>Auraliti>Ayre>Coda 2) Macbook>Ayre>Coda The streaming from my iMac sounds better than either of the two signal paths (1 or 2) listed directly above.
  8. I have a VERY odd problem that just got onto my radar screen in a random way. First, here's my equipment: Coda CSib integrated amp Ayre QB-9 DSD DAC Auraliti PK-90 USB server Buffalo USB 3 external hard drive Dynaudio Focus 380 speakers Audience Au-24 SE speaker cables Cardas Clear XLR interconnects Cardas Clear & Grover Huffman power cords Wireworld Platinum Starlight USB Apple Airport Express Radio Shack stereo mini to RCA cable (for Airport) The issue: Due to a random happening, I ended up listening to music streaming from my office computer (2009 iMac) onto the system above. The music on my iMac is either encoded AIFF or ALAC directly ripped from CDs. The way my system is set up, I can switch from playing streaming music from my iMac to the system above with the push of a button on a remote. Out of curiosity (mostly to see how bad the streaming version was compared to the DAC), I listened to several of the same songs in 44.1 via both options. I was STUNNED to hear that depending on the song, there was either a negligible difference between the two methods, OR, the streaming version was better in almost every way: bigger (deeper) soundstage, deeper bass, same or better level of realism, etc. I ended up installing Audirvana on my iMac and listened again....this made the differences between streaming and direct DAC even bigger. Thinking something was wrong, I plugged my Ayre DAC into my (old - 2007) Macbook laptop via USB in order to bypass the Auraliti server, which I thought might be the weak link in the system. Comparing the iMac streaming vs the Macbook>Ayre DAC the differences were smaller, with an incredibly slight edge going to the streaming version. I even installed Audirvana on my Macbook, and I would say that while there are very subtle differences between the two methods, in terms of quality, the differences are negligible. I have now tried many different file types, and the only way that the Macbook>DAC beats the iMac streaming is if I compare an HD file (e.g. 96) on my Macbook with the 44.1 encoded version streaming via my iMac. I have had several audiophile friends over here that have loved the sound of my system, and know that Airport can only stream ALAC 44.1 versions of music. So, finally, to my question: what is going on here? Why am I getting this result? What am I missing? Thanks in advance for reading....and pondering. Matt
  9. Hi, new member to site and first post on forum. I downloaded Pure Music v1.7 and am trying to get it to stream to my airport express hooked up to my living room computer. I've got a 2010 iMac G7 with 8GB memory. iTunes streams music just fine to the airport...but when I try same with Pure Music, the music comes out of my computer speakers. If I select "computer" in iTunes with Pure Music playing, the sound still comes out of my computer speakers. Please help....I can't figure out how to get music to actually stream to my stereo system using Pure Music. What am I missing? Thanks. Matt
