  1. Thanks for the responses! I'm back up and running, and I think what got me there is essentially what you described. I let things sit for a bit to make sure the unit wasn't trying to update firmware and had a slow connection. Once that was over I turned everything off: unit, power supply, Lightning (I even rebooted the iPad), checked all wire connection (ethernet, usb, power, etc.)...and started completely over. First powered the unit on, then the iPad, then Lightning, then connected to the unit and things came back together and worked. [i believe all software and firmware were up to date when the issue happened...I believe...they are all now.] What exactly happened, I don't actually know, so sadly I can't report on what truly caused the problem. Or even, technically, what fixed it, but its again working. The unit never gets turned off (Lightning does get 'rebooted' occasionally), maybe it just needed a cold reboot. I wish I could tell, bit all good again. Thanks again for the help, very much appreciated! (great forum!) Brad
  2. I love this product, got it several months ago and have loved it (no issues, great sound, great product)...BUT, has anyone had an issue over the last 24 hours? (it worked fine yesterday) Mine updates automagically, so its fully up to date with 2.1 and Lightning is updated, but this evening I had an issue with Lighting connecting, then it connected (at least appeared to) then didn't actually play anything (Lighting indicated that it should be). So, maybe a mistake, I hit the reset button and now I have a black front panel and nothing happening. (the ethernet port is slowly blinking every once in awhile) Any thoughts?
  3. Prior to Aries/Lighting I used a dedicated MacMini running iTunes and PureMusic - so many of my challenges are due to issues that iTunes proprietary structure brings with it....I believe. In the past I never had to use tagging software, I just used iTunes. To prep for my Aries arrival I've been using Yate to get things ready fro the 'non-iTunes world'. With regard to the above, it appears it may be working on some files and not others, but I haven't yet found a consistent reason. My other big issue is Album Art, but I think that's directly related to iTunes legacy. Are there any ways to get iTunes to actually tag files with the related art? (all my albums have proper art in iTunes) Any thoughts and ideas very welcome. An update, my Aries arrived yesterday (Friday), was pretty straight forward to get up and running, and it works great. Though I do have a lot of comments that could make the 'instructions' much easier - right now they require a pretty good computer/networking/'electronics gear' experience base as there's a quit a bit of "I should probably try..." required. My guess is the broad public will likely have some level of issue getting one to work, but I think improved instructions could help that a great deal. I always like o use my wife as the benchmark - she's smart, creative, reasonably handy, and has a solid "normal person" level of computer knowledge; no way could she have gotten an Aries up and running given the instructions (with good ones, she might be able to). Brad
  4. Just setup a new Aries. Had a a few minutes of "humm...how does that work", but after about 10 or 15 minutes (truly, only that) was up and running. AND, that included a reset (via bottom of unit) and the unit immediately looking to download new software. AND, unit couldn't get on my wireless network (it didn't know the password) so it asked for a wired connection. Gave it one and it only took a few minutes to load, reboot a couple times, and go to work. I prepped (aka read) a lot before my Aries showed up (so I was already in the pool) and was expecting a great product with a bit of teething left. I got a great product! If it had a bit better user guide that came with it, there would be no teething at all. Nice job Auralic team! (and the beta group as I'm pretty sure I just rode your shoulders!) Still a lot of work to do re Lightning and Server interaction (though very workable, it takes a level of tech understanding/work that many folks won't be willing to tackle), but that MacMini in my Living Room may be into fading days...I'll have a happy wife. Brad
  5. I've tried this fix several times and can't for the life of me figure out why it isn't working. Any ideas? With the prescribed values in tagoptions I still get all my "The..." artists collected together in the "T"s in both Lightning and in Lumin. An upfront comment to everyone in the thread - nice job! I ordered my Aries last week and it should be to me sometime within the next week or so; so I've been trying to get everything to work BEFORE it actually shows up. You all have been terrific in helping that along - I've read this entire thread and learned a great deal! I've been using a MacMini but want to get rid of the 'computer in the living room' situation, so I'm using my Synology based iTunes library for this. The several times I've tried I've changed the tagoptions; rescanned Minimserver; and re-loaded in the apps....no difference. I've even tried deleting and reinstalling the apps on the iPad. No change! I have other potential questions (big album art issues), but lets take one thing at a time.
  6. I had an older dedicated Mac Mini (may have been pre-2009 and was pre-intel chip), so last year I upgraded to new Mac Mini (i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, SSD drive, dedicated to music so as many 'things' turned off as possible - latest versions of Pure Music, iTines, and I serve my library off NAS) and there is definitely an improvement in its sound. I wouldn't pretend to understand why, or how, but it simply sounds more at ease, more relaxed (and I do have at least a reasonable understanding of technology). Simply stated, its just sounds like the computer is working less hard, similar to when a more powerful amp works less hard. I turned away from Microsoft and PCs several years ago for home use - for me, just too much 'technology' to deal with all the time (I was bored being sys-admin all the time). But, Grannyring, if you're considering a change you may also hear a difference by upgrading from your 2009 Mac. Another meaningful benefit, my old Mini started to really struggle with hirez downloads, most of my new purchases. There would be times a 24/192 file would 'skip'. My old mini didn't allow for enough memory (maxed out at 4 GB RAM) and it just couldn't process the file fast enough. More fun to consider....!
  7. Stephen, I love the sound of your software – thanks, and great work! That being said, I’m glad this thread regarding “Play with Decibel” has come up as it makes it easier for me to give my more complete feedback. I’ve had Decibel now for a few weeks and have been comparing it to both Amarra Mini and PureMusic – but sadly I find myself always going back to Pure or Amarra because its just easier to find the music I want to listen to. All three sound great, slightly different then each other but great…yes, I very much like the sound of Decibel – full with no edginess, a touch more real/relaxed then Pure, a touch ‘larger’ w/o being pushed then Amarra, etc. etc. etc. If I were to pick simply on sound I’d probably go with Decibel. BUT, the fact that I can select all my music directly through the iTunes interface with both Pure and Amarra just makes life easier – for nothing lost…just something different. I know that technically makes me outside the target market of Decibel, but as a business strategy consultant, entrepreneur, and formerly in the Venture Capital space my concern is that I may represent a very large contingent; a contingent that would gladly pay for software of the performance caliber of Decibel. More buyers, more revenue…more revenue, ‘more better’ software.
  8. I should have looked and seen Russell_L's post before I made mine... YES, with exclusive access (hog mode) turned off the clicking goes away. Wonder if this is an an "age of mac" or amount of memory issue...?
  9. Just downloaded AyreWave to compare to both PM and Amarra. Haven't listened enough yet to talk about differences, but I'm getting a clicking sound during playback, sounds similar to a click on vinyl. Have settings set to memory mode and obtain exclusive access. Running a mac mini (about 3+ years old) w 2 gig memory and latest OS. Feeding a benchmark DAC then running fully balanced through AyreWave gear. Thoughts.....
