  1. If you're anything like me, realistically most equipment will be surpassed and replaced within a couple of years, so I'd take resale value seriously and not bother with the effort. There are always other upgrades like power conditioners or cables. I was amazed just last week by how much better my new (second hand) digital xlr cable was. Would a psu upgrade to my Mutec have provided that kind of lift? Unconvinced
  2. Guys, if you're using Roon with the microRendu, please ensure you have volume levelling DISABLED. My audio server ssd failed and when I switched Roon to another pc I initially didn't notice that volume levelling was enabled. For a while it kept me wondering why the sound wasn't nearly as good. I really don't see why Roon has this enabled by default.
  3. Glad to hear there's a new firmware coming for the Mutec. At the moment, in my system, I find the Yellotec puc2 is better than the Mutec mc-3+ usb. (I have a microRendu > chord sarum super usb > ifi micro iUSB3.0 > chord sarum tuned usb > Regen > chord sarum tuned usb > [puc2 / mutec] > MIT AES > dac).
  4. Thunderbolt from Intel: <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12570323">http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12570323</a><br /> <br /> "It is able to carry multiple signal types at the same time, enabling power, display and peripherals to use a single cable"<br /> <br /> Do you think this will be a better medium than usb or firewire?<br />
  5. Personally I think there aren't enough good usb -> digital signal converters on the market, and I welcome more of them as well as more competition, which will hopefully lead to much lower prices. <br /> <br /> I would however hesitate to spend much on expensive converters because I still feel that this is an emerging market, and the technology has a way to go technologically and in value. <br /> <br /> It wouldn't surprise me if in a few years time, most companies like Sony will be using usb (or a better future interface that replaces usb) converters that are on a par with the HiFace, or better.<br /> <br /> The big advantages of stand alone converters is that you can upgrade independently of the dac, as well as buy excellent second-hand old dacs to use with computers.<br />
  6. What I don't understand is why they have apparently abandoned the idea of using the BADA interface - I believe this was supposed to be a better alternative to spdif. I'm disappointed because this means there are only 3 inputs left (optical, aes, coaxial) and I already use these inputs for satellite/bluray/transport.
  7. Michael Ritter: "We deliberately do not have a USB or FireWire input on the Alpha DAC due to the noise it would potentially introduce from the computer.<br /> D to A converters are both digital and analog devices, and for the best possible audio quality it is very important to keep the electrical environment inside the DAC enclosure as isolated and quiet as possible.<br /> We feel the best way for a DAC to accept a USB signal is to convert it to a balanced AES3 digital audio signal in an external device and only connect the isolated AES signal to the DAC.<br /> Since the external USB2 to AES3 converter will be designed to work with the current Alpha DAC there will be no upgrade required and no product obsolescence."
  8. Hello Have been following this site for a while now (great site btw Chris), just registered now. Hope someone can help me... I've been having a terrible time with J River Media Center (it really hogs processor with two processes) and Monkey Media (a bit unstable but also has started randomly stopping at the end of some tracks, not others). I'm not a big fan of foobar2000 or itunes, but most of my library is in Apple Lossless format - along with some flac. Any suggestions? I think I need to avoid a player that palms off the AAC to itunes... many thanks, Pete
