New Linux OS aimed at computer audiophiles: Voyage MPD
phil replied to nyc_paramedic's topic in Music Servers
yes, I am using an HRT Streamer II and Alix board with voyage MPD. I bought this Alix board: http://store.netgate.com/ALIX2D2-Kit-Unassembled-P1015.aspx And used this source to help install voyage MPD and configure the board: http://cheap-silent-usb-linux-music-server.blogspot.com/ Rather than use a local storage for the music files I created an NFS mount to an Iomega NAS: http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-StorCenter-ix2-200-Network-Attached/dp/B002SG7MEG I used an NFS mount rather than CIFS; you have to create an NFS folder on the NAS and make it available to the Alix board's IP address. NFS performed a lot better than CIFS. It works and sounds great. I used MPOD on the iPhone for a client. -

Nick, thanks for your reply. I look forward to hearing how the mini-PCI SATA solution works out. Forgive me if my question doesn't make complete sense. I'm still a newbie with this stuff so I'm trying to figure out some basics before I make any purchases. As far as the NAS question goes, I was hopeful of being able to have a Western Digital My Book Live NAS (with my music files on it) connected to a DLink router and then being able to mount that drive on the Alix's Voyage MPD using SAMBA. Does this sound feasible? Thanks, Phil -

Hi Nick, I'm thinking about an Alix board running Voyage MPD as a one box solution without the need to have another Linux computer host my music files. So the only other device I would need would be a client, like an iPhone or laptop. You mention getting a mini-PCI SATA. Any update on how this worked out? What external drive would you recommend? Have you tried mounting a NAS using SAMBA/CIFS on the Alix and then pointing the MPD library at the mounted drive? Thanks, Phil
