  1. Hi all, I'm sure that there has got to be some extremely easy fix for this but for the life of me, I haven't been able to figure it out.... My operating system is Windows XP and I've just installed JRiver 16 and the Asio4all driver. I have a wavelength DAC between my computer and the receiver. According to several posts, in order for me to bypass the Kmixer in XP, I've got to go to "Control Panel, Sounds/Audio devices, hardware tab, USB Audio Device, Properties, and then select "do not map through this device" and "do not use audio features on this device." After doing this, when I restart the computer in order to have the changes take effect, I now have no ability to control the volume on the computer. Again, from the posts, it seems like this is what should happen when I've successfully bipassed the Kmixer. All is good except for the fact that when I open JRiver, the volume bar on the top left is all the way down and it says "n/a" when I try to turn it up. This leaves me having to crank up the amplifier to its highest level just to be able to barely hear the music. Any ideas about what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!!
  2. Excellent ecwl- i'll definitely try these when i get home. I'm hoping that your point 8 might be part of my problem - i looked up the thread on windows configuration and since i'm running XP it appears that i need to download a thirdparty driver in order to get the darn thing into ASIO mode.... Thanks! James
  3. Thanks Paul, i'll try the using a powered hub first and see if that makes the difference. Do you happen to know of a site or thread where they tell you how to properly configure a pc for audio? I'd like to give it a shot but as i really know very little about computers, i am skeptical that'd i'd be capable of doing so.
  4. One thing that i didn't mention but probably should have is that the sound from the hp mini via the wavelength was absolutely awful. I switched out the hp mini with my wife's hp laptop (she got all the bells and whistles that they supplied last year) and the sound improved dramatically. Note: i have no idea why the sound improved which makes me think that it might be due the fact that she's got a lot more computing power (way more ram, better processor) than i did on the mini. Of course, maybe there was some other reason why here computer performed better... It's because of the above logic (and the fact that i'd like to get a touch screen - i totally fell in love with the sooloos when i saw it but can't stomach the 10G it would cost) that i thought upgrading the computer might be the way forward. Also, had a thought over dinner.... If i were to switch to a mac mini, could i just buy another ipad and use it as a touchscreen? Would it give me close to the same functionality as a pc with touchscreen? Thanks everyone for all of your thoughts! Jamez
  5. Hi all, I'm a total newbie to the world of computer audiophilia and absolutely love this site!!! By virtue of a lot of these posts, Chris' suggested purchases and my total inability to stop myself from buying cool stuff when i wander into the stereo store, i've ended up with a bunch of expensive (for me at least) and random stuff over the last couple years that i'm pretty sure isn't giving me audiophile quality sound. Now doing what i should have done ages ago, i'm trying to actually strategize my next purchases. Any advice on what i should buy/how i can configure my current system to give me audiophile quality sound would be extremely helpful... (and also help me justify to my better half why i need to buy more stuff one "last" time) What we've got: Wavelength proton 24/96 dac Rotel rsx-1560 B&W 600 series home theatre system speakers Synology 710+ NAS HP mini 210 Netgear N600 dual band router (wndr3400) Ipad Iphone The first thing that jumps out at me is that is that my computing power is way below what i probably should have. It also seems like a ton of people here seem to go for a suped-up mac mini. (eg 4 or 8 gigs ram, ssd, etc) Never having bought a mac before, i'm totally willing to make the jump. However, as i'd also like to get a touch screen for the "final" version of the system, maybe the mac is not the way to go. Thoughts? If not the mac, what options should i get on a pc considering that i don't know how to build a computer from scratch? Once i resolve the computer issue, is there anything else glaring that i'm missing? Are there any other bells/whistles that don't cost a ton that would add to the quality of the music? I've read a lot here about upgrading the power supply to make a big improvement... Btw, i am also totally prepared to hear that some of the stuff i already have may not work with an 'ideal' system and that i'm an idiot to only be considering all this now. As the saying goes though, better late than never. Budget-wise i'd like to stay below USD3500. Thanks for any help you all may have. James
