  1. Well now I've just spent half the morning retrieving the hard drives and notes from those sessions and opening all the sessions of the original audio and the masters... this is why I should never post in the first place... None of those are digital clipping - they are all analog clipping on the input to the ADC. Levels were adjusted later, but some of the best performances were from before. We had a second recorder running with a different ADC with a (lower) input alignment. During the sessions it was my intention to use the audio from this second recorder if we ended up using any of the early takes that had overs on the first recorder. However after many hours of listening later we all agreed that there were no audible problems with the first recorder and we all greatly preferred the sound of the ADC on the first recorder. (note: this only applies to opus 131) What I said in our "private" messaging applies elsewhere - I had forgotten about this specific instance though as it's been a couple of years. Anyway I stand by this recording, and I do not feel that there is any compromise in quality. If I did I would have addressed it at the time. Best Regards, Mark PS: Hello Chris - was a pleasure to meet you at AES.
  2. Hello all, Saw this today after a colleague sent me a link, and thought I should post a couple of things. All the hi-res Cypress recordings on bandcamp were recorded using a single pair of Sanken CO-100K microphones (which have a frequency response up to ~100kHz), an Avalon AD2022 microphone preamplifier, and a PrismSound Orpheus interface directly into a Pyramix DAW. The quartet plays on outstanding instruments, and the violin Cecily Ward (my wife since this was already mentioned) plays (a 1681 Stradivarius aka Fleming) alone produces harmonics beyond 50kHz. If we recorded at 192kHz you would see the fft taper off between 50 and 60kHz. Of course I'm sure some people will wonder why we don't record at 192kHz or higher in that case - but I'll leave that for another time as I'm sure it would be a long and heated debate! Regards, Mark Willsher PS: As indicated on the bandcamp site for the hi-res versions of these recordings please only download the FLAC format. The FLAC files are what I encoded and uploaded - the ALAC files are created by bandcamp and as apple's publically available ALAC library doesn't support high sample rates or wordlengths - the ALAC files are 48/16. For anything other than FLAC you are better off with the non hi-res version of the albums - but of course that is limited to 44.1/16.
