  1. Quote "I also had a look at HOLM Acoustics. I see that they have a similar, but different system to DEQX. Do you have any idea what sort of price range the DSPre1 from HOLM is in ? It would be good if they could upgrade there USB input to accept better than 16 bit 44.1/48. I expect they will in time." unquote. Yes the HOLM people are working to improve their input and also to accept higher sampling frequencies. They are priced at about $5000 retail if i am not wrong. It does all that DEQX can do. "Once I get the speakers right the longer term goal is to work on room acoustics, particularly focusing on the deficiencies identified by measuring the in room response of the speakers." I suggest you do the room first and then the speakers to match. Remember it is ultimately a box playing in a bigger box. If in the first place the bigger does not sound like a box, then a lot of problems are solved and need not be addressed (or rather tackled) in the first place. Incidentally the FOCUS system does electronically (in the analogue domain) what you propose to do using the DEQX system. Please see http://www.holmacoustics.com/dspre1_introduction.php Wish you all the luck in your endeavour. If you do need any help, then please do let me know. If you do visit Mumbai, INDIA, then you are welcome to come to my place and listen. Take care. Raju Patel
  2. Hi, I am not a techie. nor do i understand the technical language being discussued. HOWEVER if room and speaker correction is what is needed then i would like to share my experience as below. i am a music lover and took great pride in my earlier setup of EMM LABS CDSD SE Transport and EMM LABS DCC2 SE DAC, REVEL Ultima SALON speakers, GamuT monoblocks, Clearaudio turntable, transparent interconnects and Bi Wire cable etc. This is till I saw and heard a live performance of the Nutcracker Suite Ballet. Thereafter i played the same suite cd by Phillips- Valery Gergiev. LIFE CHANGED. My setup was representing only 5% of what i had heard live. Mind you it was very well set up. I tried a lot of stuff and things to achieve better sound. BUT NO LUCK. Till i met a friend who has a very good pair of ears. He told me that there is a guy who can help to setup a custom room with electronics and speakers. He also told me that he HAS SETUP A system in a studio in Europe way long back and it can be auditioned. I did audition that and i was nothing short of a revelation. THE STUDIO WAS FULLY ACOUSTICALLY TREATED AND WE WERE LISTENING TO A HIGH END CD PLAYER PLAYING THROUGH THE STUDIO'S AMPLIFICATION AND SPEAKERS. Please read http://www.rayofsound.com/gamut.tas.html I am not a technical guy, but i will try to explain certain issues which every music lover should understand. Sound below 300 Hz created the greatest anomaly in a listening environment. High frequency sound waves are comparatively easier to control or diffuse. For eg. the sound wave lengths are: 300Hz 45" 250 Hz 54" 200Hz 67" 150Hz 135" 100Hz 135" or 11'- 3" 80Hz 169" or 14' 60Hz 226" or 18'+ How in the world can bass trap 15" or 20" diameter or maybe 12" thick solve/absorb these waves. Beats me!! Unless somebody has changed the laws of Physics. I have taken the plunge long time back and i am grinning ear to ear every time i play a cd/vinyl. And i am using reasonable priced interconnects/ and mediocre speaker cables and power cables. I FEEL THAT EVERY AUDIOPHILE/MUSIC ENTHUSIAST SHOULD INVEST FIRST AND FOREMOST IN THE ROOM THAN ANYTHING ELSE. Incidentally i have also tried and tested DEQX correction in my room and i felt the sound had lost it's life. Tried bass traps too. Nothing helped. I am now able to ENJOY music all over again. ALL THE TIME. You might want to look at HOLM Acoustics too. Tried it in my room. It can do good things but still cant beat my setup. CHEERS....
  3. Hi Jeff, " thoroughly ignorant of how great digital recording is". i do not agree. We may be less informed but not "ignorant"??? Everybody has preferences in all spheres of life. So also music and it's method of reproduction. AND that's why so many home/high end/pro audio brands survive. I agree with John and Suteetat. I don't see the point. As compared to what are you wanting to show that digital recording is superior. And that what you propose to do isn't analog in the first place!!! what do we compare with? 32 bit vs 16bit??? Anyway i would like to hear what you propose. Raju Patel
  4. sshd, you are half way there. in the set up you are still listening to a box (spkrs) playing in a box (room). Large rooms are a luxury that not many audio enthusiast's have access to (at least not me). And also that many do not have a lot of time to continously experiment with audio products and tweaks (at least not me). Hence I decided to go and enlist the services of a person who has implemented a great set up and which is heard by audio reviewer's, heard it myself, and finally implemented the setup in my home. Of course what you say helps only after doing a setup like what i have done. DRC only helps to solve a small part of the problem according to my experience. Wish you great listening......

  6. Hi guys!!!! Back after a long break. Was travelling and recent tragic and barbaric events in Mumbai have taken a toll on every one's sensibilties. But MUSIC AND MUSIC has helped to come through. I have been listening to EMM CDSD SE coupled with EMM DCC2SE. GREAT SOUND. I have also coupled my Mac Pro (with a Lynx AES16 PCe card) to the EMM DCC2SE DAC where the EMM DAC is the master clock to the MacPro Lynx card. SAME GREAT SOUND as seen with the EMM combo. However without the clocking between the MacPro and the EMM DAC, there was an audible distinct sound every 5 second or so. But with the clocking coupled it is AUDIO NIRVANA. Have ALSO ordered an APLHA DAC.. will compare and keep posting..... Music I listen to Various XRCD's titles, Roger Water's (Amused to Death) Jennifer Warnes (Hunter), TUTTI, Western Classical composition releases of RR, Pentatone etc., Water Lily Acoustics' CD's, Rock and pop album's etc etc....... One problem that i encounter is outputting 192/24 from iTunes. How do i do it???? Is it a limitation of iTunes? Will any other software help like Logic Express or Logic Pro? Raju Patel
  7. Hi Chris, I have installed the Lynx AES16e card in the Mac Pro and connected to the EMM DAC thru the 1604 cable. I also installed the Core driver from the CD that came with the card and also the Mixer Appln. After all that the Mixer application does not recognise the card. iTunes can output to the card and i can hear thru my external dac and consequently the speakers. When this happens i hear a "jitter" noise every 4-5 seconds????? preliminary listening indicates that the Lynx sound in abt 90% of the EMM combo.. Any solutions to solve the issue "jitter" noise and Mixer compatibility issue????? raju patel
  8. i tried and listened to the following combo; 1. Optical out of the Mac Book Pro to feed my EMM DAC, and 2. EMM Transport and EMM DAC combo. I listened to western classical, female vocal and Jazz. My observations are as The Mac sound was lifeless and subdued. The EMM combo sound was mind blowing in comparison. Especially the female vocals. Feed form the mac sounded as if the singer was performing in the second basement. very subdued and no life at all. with the emm combo it felt as i am sitting at the venue. i am going to try out the lynx aes16 card on the Mac Pro and feed the pcm to the emm dac and see. will keep posting. thanks Raju
  9. Chris, Wappinghigh. thanks a lot. i spoke to the RME distributors' technical guy in India. He says that the RME HDSPe AIO car CAN USE AN EXTERNAL CLOCK AND ALSO OUTPUTS OPTICAL DATA. Guess that solves my problem vis a vis clocking issue. BUT how good is this card?? anybody tried it? Cannot find a lynx Distributor in India. I read the discussion on the reference music servers'. Gives some insight on the issue. I feel that i should try using the simple optical out from the Mac to start with. Then try using Lynx or RME card. I guess that is the way to learn. Now that the Large Hadron Collider HAS NOT ENDED our existence, we have time to experiment. Will keep posting the results...... Thanks again. Raju
  10. Thanks Chris. Below is the image of the rear panel of the EMM DAC. Yes it has AES/EBU inputs. These are ANALOGUE inputs. It also has: S/PDIF Coax and TOS inputs Optical input DSD inputs (BNC) Word Clock In and Out (1 pair BNC and 1 pair Optical) Analogue line inputs (XLR and RCA) Please see image http://www.emmlabs.com/images/thumbs/DCC2/back.gif if i understand right, then you are suggesting that i use the analouge outputs from the Lynx AES16e? if what i assume is right, then i would not like to take that path. I WANT MY EMM DAC TO DO THE CONVERSION. Cause it up samples to 5.6.. MHz and then converts.. SOUNDS FANTASTIC TOO... PLUS I WANT TO USE THE WORD CLOCK OF THE EMM DAC. Any solutions. Chris your response is a great help. Thank you again Raju
  11. Thanks for the prompt response. I do not mind the optical out of the mac. But how does the EMM DAC be the master clock? how good is the optical out of the MacPro? My existing set up of a standalone EMM cd transport and the EMM dac is outstanding. i would want at least the same quality from the proposed Mac and EMM dac combo. How do i get optical out of the Mac? Which cable? EMM DAC has a TOSlink optical input (square type). Alternatively, is there any other solution in the Apple range which i can use? Is there a possibility of using an external card/device which can allow EMM DAC to be the master clock? Thank you in advance. Raju
  12. Hi, I want to use the MacPro (2007, Quad core) as a music server (using iTunes). I have a EMM Labs DCC2SE DAC which i am presently using in my set up. I want to use the EMM DAC with the Mac Pro. Which sound card do i use for streaming optical out from the Mac? I have checked out (over the net) the Lynx AES16e and the REM HDSPe RayDAT or the HDSPe AIO. Any other possibility? I want to use the EMM DAC as the master clock (which i do now). Will the Lynx or the REM accept an external master clock? I am going to use the setup as a purely two channel audiophile grade set up. Thanks Raju
