  1. hi, there are a host of options that may or may not have an impact on NIC; GIGABITE LITE - ENABLED? What does this do? Interrupt modulation - enabled? Speed and duplex - auto negotiation? Jumbo Frame - disabled? Any thoughts?
  2. Hi, excuse my ignorance but what is the NIC? One think I noticed last night is the powerline adapters were flickering Amber at the point of buffering. That suggests a slower transfer rate I think but could that be reflecting the issue with the laptop or be part of the problem. Reducing the LAN bit rate would help isolate the issue but feels strange getting a gigabit LAN to then not benefit from it. I loaded some new software I haven't previously used, AVIRA security software when I got the laptop, I wonder if that could be causing latency issues? Cheers
  3. There's not a huge amount on start up. I couple of pieces of security related software, superantispyware and Avira. But other stuff seems logical and not excessive. Performance looks ok on CPU useage (2-3%) when simply on the internet like now but RAM is running at 30% at that time. I'll look again tomorrow when I have more time and can run performance when I'm actually streaming music. The latency software indicates SVCHOST.EXE is taking a long time and causing hard page faults. This .exe contains a multitude of services that I wouldn't have a clue whether it was safe to disable or not. I have to say having to go into this level of analysis is why I was unsure about going down the streaming route. It's great when it works but a nightmare when it doesn't. I've changed a laptop to a better one, in theory, and yet have this irritating issue that is not easy to resolve. cheers
  4. hi, no not got to that yet. TBH it sounded a bit scary! I've tried to address the above (there was some info on line about avoiding CPU throttling) but I will look to follow your advice next. I've been a bit stretched for time this week also. Are you suggesting running performance monitoring after I've disabled non essentials? cheers
  5. hi well I've ran that software whilst the laptop was connected by ethernet via powerline plugs. I fired up J River and then kicked off Latency Mon. I played some music for about 10 minutes without buffering. However, the results suggest issues. I've attached the screen shots. Any idea what to do next?? I have tried to attach the screen print but not sure iv'e got it right either! cheers Jamie
  6. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I rebooted everything at the weekend, tried different sockets, reset the powerline adapters, etc. I did have some limited success but not total. I'll check out the info you posted and see what that throws up. I am working away for a few days but hopefully get chance later this week. Thanks again, Jamie
  7. hi, it's a long time since I've posted on here but the advice in the past has helped me get into and enjoy digital music. I have for while now been running my streaming system without issue. I was running J River MC 16 on a ASUS laptop connected to a Chord Qute DAC fed into a NAIM Suppernait connected to PMC 24's. I am using flac files fed from a Synology NAS to the laptop. Connections are via powerline using ethernet connections. The powerline adapters are all gigabit versions. The router was a Sky router (100mbps). This has served me well without issue. Recently, I replaced the laptop for a Lenovo with SSD and gigtbit ethernet connection. Since then I now get regular stuttering of playback and buffering which is driving me mad. The only change I can see is that the laptop by necessity is plugged into a good quality block which also has the amp, dac and oppo bluray player. Previously the laptop was plugged into it's own wall socket. I have updated the laptops drivers. Last week I also updated the router to a new gigabit Sky router. I had to reconnnect the powerline adapters. Stuttering is worse than ever. I assume the fault is that the data is not getting through to the laptop and Dac in a consistent flow. Can anyone offer any advice as to what the assumed network issue is? Any advice gratefully received. cheers Jamie
  8. hi, i;ve just picked up a 2 qute last week. I've had it running in since Wednesday evening. I tried to make a quick assessment last night using the usb connection from Windows 7 PC using JR River MC. TBH i didnt hear much difference to my Audiolap cd8200. I am hoping to take some of the digital sound out of my set up and get a more analogue sound that is more natural, I'm using a Supernait amp with Focal 816 W SE. I find that it can sound a bit harsh and not a comfortable listen at normal listening volumes. Plenty of detail, imaging, drive etc. but I am looking for all of that with a more natural smoother presentation. I'm not sure there is good synergy between my components. I guess the 2 Qute will need more running in time? Trouble is I have the dac on trial until Tuesday only. Can I expect full performance before then? cheers Jamie
  9. hi would a JRiver ID play ok with the USB input on the 2Qute? I know it is driverless for Android and Apple and has a driver for windows. But I don't think the ID is windows based. Any experience on this? thanks
  10. thanks, but I assume this will mean a seperate processor as against a motherboard with built in processor? cheers
  11. thanks, that was my fear! I only need to stream the codecs to an AV processor which would do the decoding so don't know if that means I can get away with with onboard graphics. I notice that the motherboards mentioned include HDMI outputs but does that mean it would be capable of outputting a digital stream? Eric, thanks for your response about SSD. cheers
  12. hi I have spent many hours over the last week trying to understand enough about building my own server. I currently run my laptop and external HDD into my DAC and would like a more permanent solution. I want to set up a NAS storage system and connect that to an audio specific server along the lines of the CAPS products. I have a couple of queries to start with. Firstly, I want to be able to feed a bitstream of HD video and audio also from ripped blurays to my AV Receiver. Would this totally negate benefits of trying to build a CAPS? I assume that the integrated processors used for audio may not be sufficient to also drive the video element? Would I need an added graphics card or diiferent motherboard than the one's listed under the CAPS section? I know this primarily an audio site and that is my first priority. But ideally I'd like to be able to watch and listen to my music blurays with the same approach. Secondly, are there any cheaper alternatives to the SOtM? It's a bit expensive at this point bearing in mind I need to kit myself out with a Synology NAS first. But it would be useful to know if there are any value for money alternatives which would give a boost over the built in USB ports. Lastly, what's the purpose of the SSD? It appears that most pull the data from the NAS so what is the SSD used for? Sorry for my ignorance. I hope you can offer me some advice as I am struggling to take in all the wealth of information at the moment. Thanks Jamie
  13. hi I don't post that often on here due to not having enough time to engage in conversations unfortunately. But the site is my go to source for info related to all things digital. In the last couple of weeks I can't access this site from my phone or Tablet. I used to be able to now I just get a blank screen. The phone is Android and the Tablet is a Nexus 7. I assume it may be related to an upgrade in android software but I don't know how to resolve it. A lot of my access to CA is whilst in transit to work so I am desperate to sort this out. Anyone have any ideas on the cause and resolution to viewing only a blank page? thanks
