I checked out Clockwork Angels in SeeDeclip. Turns out to be very heavily clipped - e.g. 4777 clips in the last track. Sounds much better after de-clipping, but still seems a bit compressed.

Any computer is OK for ripping - but a modern PC with a fast processor will do the job more quickly. It's a digital process and power supply noise doesn't come into the equation.

I don't think it matters which optical output you use. Can you hear any difference between outputs?

I'm sure products like the UnitiServe are well-packaged turnkey solutions for computerphobes, but anyone that browses this site has to go for a Mac or PC-based system.

Problems correcting Registry Errors with Internet Explorer 9 Beta
noogle1 replied to Pettyofficer's topic in General Forum
Is anything actually wrong with the PC? I always categorise registry cleaners alongside colonic irrigation - unnecessary and potentially dangerous. -
I'd rather live with worse SQ than commit heretical acts that go against my "bits are bits" religion! If it did sound better I'd never sleep again until I understood why...

I can understand the microphony argument for isolation of analogue equipment, but something is seriously wrong if it makes a difference under a PC or Mac.

isn't that what I said?

1. Yes - think of the V-Link as a piece of cable that just passes through whatever frequencies it receives 2. Yes - if your DAC has asynchronous inputs (e.g. async USB) then you don't need a V-Link
-
1. Yes 2. Nothing - V-Link is limited to 96/24 maximum

ordered a Lindemann USB DAC 24/192

OK, I understand the "future-proofing" concerns. Just think you could save a world of driver pain by going for a 32-bit/4GB system. Try starting up Win 7's Resource Monitor (part of Task Manager/Performance Monitor) and see how much physical memory you are actually using. I guess it would be the same story for the secondary USB card - audio bandwidths are a fraction of USB's. -
Asychronous USB or S/PDIF?

Async converter is the way to go. It won't interfere with the data but will fix the clock jitter... -
ordered a Lindemann USB DAC 24/192

Interested in why you want to run Windows 7 in 64-bit mode rather than 32-bit mode? Do you need more than 4GB address space? -
The SPDIF and the USB outputs are driven by the same clock circuit in the PC and will both suffer from similar amounts of jitter. I don't know whether your Atlantic Tech DAC or the V-DAC is more jitter resistant. You could reduce the jitter to either and improve SQ using a V-Link between the PC and DAC, which has asynch USB input. I use JRiver Media Center for playback and find it excellent.
