  1. buy a basic mac mini, put in 8 gb ram and use an outboard HDD to store your music files....you'll be real happy with the result. I switched from a MacBook Pro and the Mini "sounds" better to my ears. You don't need giant computing power to run music software like Audirvana etc. If you use the included 500 GB HDD in the Mini that's good for maybe 1500 cd's apple lossless format. good luck, Larry
  2. My brother has those speakers and loves them. He pairs them with a Peachtree INova, has the dac and integrated amp built in...works well and sounds good, very cost effective too.
  3. I have a lot of My Audio Cables power cords and interconnects in my rig...Just got a powercord to replace the stock Mini with Furutech connectors on both ends, even the C7 end! Real solid sound improvement, more transparency, bass and overall better tone across the board. I wondered if I'd hear "a difference" and I do and am glad I spent the dough.....so I'm guessing a good quality powercord on the new MacMini will improve your sound.. Larry
  4. Recently I replaced my 6 year old MacBook with the newest MacMini, I5 Processor with 8 gb of ram running Audirvana. ( I had used pure music for years but Audirvana sounds better and is so easy to use it's a no brainer). The sound transformation was not subtle. Lots of new details in the music since I guess the noise floor must have dropped down. Run the rig headless with screensharing from my MacBook Pro. I heartily recommend the change you are contemplating. Larry
  5. I don't know what's easier or cheaper than the Apple Remote app.
  6. I stopped using Audiogon when they went to the new format website and I had been a longtime buyer and seller. I used to frequent the forums also. I just stopped and will not use Audiogon in its present state.
  7. suggest a switch to Audirvana from Bitperfect....big sound quality boost. Suggest bumping up to 8 GB ram if your Mini can handle it and updating to the Mountain Lion OS, it's a good one. welcome to the group!
  8. will you also use this rig for gaming???
  9. I believe in power cords. I just ordered A MYAUDIO Cables HC powercord terminated with Furutech F1's on both ends, the computer side is the figure 8 C7. We'll see if it makes a difference in sound as it made positive improvements on my DAC, power conditioner and integrated amp. The DAC has an Ultimate Source on it. Larry
  10. Folks, I would use a powered HDD not bus powered. As long as the external HDD is self-powered is that the key? My new mac mini has 3.0 usb ports and I'd like to utilize them. Right now I use an outboard powered firewire 400 hdd for my music library. would switching to an 800 firewire drive be preferable to the usb solution? should I always be looking for the fastest interface possible to play my music library? 3.0 > 800 right?? I've been using computer audio for four years but the more I read these forums the more I realize I don't know. thanks, Larry
  11. Thanks to all who responded. I hope Wyred comes up with an appropriate driver given Audirvana's popularity.
  12. Just had the Dac2 USB interface installed and Audirvana will not play in direct and integer mode, before the upgrade it played direct/integer mode. I emailed Wyred for help but not Audirvana. Any ideas? thanks, LarryK
  13. Just discovered Wyred now has the asynchro chip in its newest Dac1. I bought mine in January this year. Called the company, cost to change out chip was $150 plus shipping costs roundtrip. The rep I spoke with advised "you probably wouldn't hear any difference." I thought it was refreshing the company didn't suck me in for an unnecessary "upgrade." BTW, I like the Dac1 very much.
