  1. Setup: Focal XS 2.1 connected via USB to my office computer with windows XP J River Media Center with the output currently set to Direct Sound Question: Since the Focal unit bypasses the computer's sound card (correct me if this is not accurate), do I gain anything by installing ASIO? Does ASIO work only with soundcards that have USB outs (which my computer does not)? My intention is to change J River's audio output to ASIO. I have not had any luck using kernel streaming. I either get errors about compatibility or playback appears to start and never plays any music. Thoughts? Thanks for the help.
  2. Hi all - need some help selecting a desktop PC. I currently have an iDecco and PSB speakers that I listen to primarily with an iPod touch and songs ripped at 320 kbps or better. This is my first high end system, but I have been very, very impressed thus far with this set up. I also have a Dell laptop with an 1 TB external hard drive connected to the iDecco with a starlight usb cable (no digital coaxial or optical outputs on my laptop). I use iTunes as the media player on this system and control it via my ipod. This was what I hard originally intended to listen to primarily, but this set up does not sound as great as the iPod dropped directly into the iDecco - and this includes lossless files on the external hard drive. I would assume this has to do with the limitations of the USB as an input. So... What are my options as far as specific PCs with higher quality outputs that are compatible with the iDecco (digital coaxial and optical)? And am I going to have to store my music on my internal hard drive in order to eliminate the external usb cord and any limitations it introduces into the system? Lastly...I am in the process of ripping my CD collection to my external hard drive using Apple's lossless format. I like using iTunes and really like controlling iTunes via my ipod touch but am I going to ultimately regret not ripping these CD's using FLAC or some other type of format? Thanks for the help.
  3. Hello - I am currently in the process of setting up an iDecco. I intend on listening to music primarily over the usb connection via my computer and an external hard drive attached to the computer. My questions: Does anyone have any experience with a specific USB cable to connect the computer to an iDecco? I've looked over the forums and it appears, as with anything, results are dependent of specific equipment. I am using a Dell laptop which will eventually be changed probably to a Mac. Additionally, are there any settings on my PC I have to adjust to allow the computer to take advantage of a high-end USB cable? Also, is a high-end USB cable necessary to connect the external hard drive to the computer? I get the impression it is not, but I would like someone with specific experience to offer some advice. I listen to Apple lossless files via iTunes (which I am open to changing) and am having some solid core speaker wire made by a friend who assures me his speaker wire is as good as anything I can find on the market - point being that I do not want a USB cable to be the "weak link in the chain". Thanks so much for the help.
