  1. @John Doe Has there been any update to the ISO since your original release? I've been seeding a torrent for that one but want to make sure I haven't missed anything (I don't think there have been any updates, really wouldn't need any). Thanks again for this - my CAPS has been working great.
  2. For $40 the MC350 case is tough to beat, unless the utilitarian look really bugs you. I think it looks fine. Plus, you are not going to find a better ventilated case for fanless operation if you are concerned about heat. It is pretty much wide open on all sides. I mounted the hard drive on the side with the USB card so that the area above the mobo heatsink would remain clear. As for SIIG USB 3.0 card, unfortunately I've been remiss in my listening tests. Just haven't had the time I hoped for lately and have been doing most of my comparisons vs. my old Squeezebox Touch. However, for only $13 at mini-box.com, the optional back plate/riser card doesn't seem like a lot to pay to have the option to add a board at any time. Sorry I can't be more help. Have been over to Sleeping Bear Dunes? Here's a shot of Boekeloo Beach:
  3. No kidding. Long delay occurred when I sent the battery back to be tested by batteryspace. To be honest, I don't think the battery is going to make that much of a difference in my system. Cost wise I'm not out that much in the grand scheme of things (about $150) and I can always use it for other projects (got a portable DIY powered speaker it would fit into nicely). Certainly less expensive than the Red Wine battery option though that is completely plug and play, but $1000 is a bit pricey for an experiment. Time? Sure I've blown hours but that's part of the fun.
  4. Here is a link: Y-PWR, Hot Swap, Load Sharing Controller It allows you to connect two power sources (one AC and one battery for example) to the CAPS so that I can leave it powered up all the time (no need to power down, swap supplies, power back up). Whichever power source has the higher voltage gets sent to the CAPS, or if the two have the same voltage the load is shared between them. When the battery is fully charged, it will take precedence being about 14v and no power from the AC supply will be sent to the CAPS As the battery drains and matches the AC power supply's 12v, the load will be shared between the two Once the battery drains below 12v the load sharing board will send power only from the AC supply Keep in mind I have both an AC power supply (to the CAPS) and an AC battery charger (to the battery), and I'll still need to plug/unplug or turn on/turn off these to fully isolate them (I plan to build a switch box for this). But I won't have to cycle the CAPS. The board is also good for quick A/B testing between supplies.
  5. OK, I'm back again with my Boekeloo. I was having some battery charging issues that I think have been resolved. I had hoped to use just the battery on its own, with its built-in Charge Management Board running as a UPS (charging when needed and letting me run off-the-grid when I unplug). Problem was that even when plugged into to an AC source for charging, the battery would eventually drain and go into shutdown protection mode. What I believe is happening is that the charging circuit cuts out when the battery is full (necessary to protect the cells from over voltage) and then comes back on when the battery drains to about 10.5v (as spec'd by the manufacturer), but at that point the CAPS must draw more current than the charging circuit can supply in order to bring the voltage up to the needed 12v and the battery eventually goes into shutdown mode as voltage drops further (again, to protect the cells). Big kudos to batteryspace.com in helping diagnose this issue... their customer service was fantastic! Soooo, I'm back to using the mini-box load-sharing board that will allow me to switch between AC and DC at will. I've got everything I need to wire this up and hopefully be able to give it go this week/weekend. It will be interesting to hear what differences I experience going back to battery after having used my CAPS on AC for the past several weeks.
  6. Brand new Stereolab digital cable with BNC connectors and BNC>RCA adapters. $250 shipped in CONUS, paypal preferred. More info here: Master Reference and here: 818 – Master Reference Digital Cable | STEREOLAB –
  7. My "NAS" is actually a Windows computer in the basement with JRiver installed. This gives me te option of running JRiver on my CAPS in the listening room in one of the following ways: As a server with the JRiver library pointed to the Windows computer in the basement (just as you would with a NAS and how I am currently set up) As a client sharing the JRiver library located on the Windows computer in the basement Has anyone compared these two approaches in terms of sound quality? Done some searching but can't find anything. With option 2, will I run into problems controlling the JRiver client on the CAPS via Gizmo or WebRemote? Thanks for any advice - I'm hoping to get some feedback before jumping in and trying option two (which I am considering so as two avoid two competing libraries and streamlining management of the files).
  8. Off to Ebay. Length of the coax is about 12" from each RCA tip to the bend, so about 2' total and a bit longer if you bent it out straight, tip to tip.
  9. Not sure if this counts, but I re-installed over a previous install of John Doe Win8. Was just a matter of booting from a John Doe Win8 USB install drive and then selecting "Reset Your PC" to do a fresh install.
  10. I did get the battery set up, but ran into a charging problem which I am in the process of getting resolved. I've been out of town for work so it has been slow going on the listening/evaluation front. I've got the CAPS hooked up again with the regular AC supply, but it is going to be a bit longer before the battery solution comes together. Certainly makes me appreciate all that goes into developing these CAPS designs.
