  1. I have duplicate 2T drives. If one fails I use the duplicate to replace a new one. All manual file transfers through a Mac. Cheers!
  2. I have a hard time following this thread because of my lack of IT knowledge. My expansion plan is simple. When my 2T external drive (connected to digital player) is full I buy another and and start separating out genres and dedicating new 2T drives to that genre. So If I feel like classical I plug the "classical" drive in etc. This what I do with my GoPro 4k vids which fill drives up like crazy. 2T drives for $89. Cheers!
  3. Very nice experience....I'm envious. Thanks for sharing. I agree with the comments about provenance. A lot of abuse in the industry that one must navigate. I have an old turntable and records from the 70's. I don't know if it was the vinyl mastering that makes it sound so good or my memories from my youth dictating how the song should sound. I get around this dilemma by recording the vinyl to 24/192. You need an exceptionally high end system to make this work. When recorded I never seem to play the record again.
  4. Interesting comments! My background is not in I.T. so I won't go there. Not too many companies are making their own PC-like motherboard with audio prioritized. Is this direction driven by creating something proprietary or are there real benefits to designing the entire audio chain? For example Bryston uses modified PIs for their streaming. What are they missing out on by going to third party processors? Like I said software/hardware is not my forte. Cheers!
  5. I always enjoy insights provided by an audio engineer's description of how things are measured. My father brought me into the world of audio more than 40 years ago. When he helped me purchase my first system his advice was don't believe the specs. We spent days going from stereo store to stereo store in downtown Toronto auditioning systems. Ended up with a system with lousy specs but great sound for an entry level receiver. Now I look at expensive "stuff" but it's still about the audition. I have dodged the bullet many times by auditioning systems with good reviews and manufacturing pedigree and ending up passing for something else. My audio ears/brain/tastes are unique. Looking forward to PART 2. Cheers
  6. Thanks for the review. MOSFET output is reminiscent of the old Hafler amps which had a tubey softness. Based on the op-amp rolling suggestion/capability I assume this unit has a similar sound signature? Cheers Went to the manual for more info..... 9. 7. The website specs indicate the DACs USB drivers as " Windows". Will it work with LINUX or MAC ? (Not a computer person)
  8. Nice to see the level of quality placed in the recording of music... not a jazz person but I think I'll take a look. Cheers
  9. Thanks for the review. Always great to see new products that improve the experience. Had me reading the review in my head with Arnold's accent LOL. R-2R DACs .... how do they rank among other DAC types? Cheers!
  10. I have a library of about 4000 songs accumulated over ten years. Some were ripped using 2007 iTunes, dbpoweramp, and vinyl studio. I remember typing in all the tag data in iTunes for about 100 cds!! ie a million typos. dbpoweramp rips at the time didn't have the benefit of musicbrainz either early on.....more manual entires. I have such a mish mash of tags and incorrect filenames that I didn't really dare to move outside a simple file directory structure in my music server. I only recently found a tag editor. I saw mp3tag editor but was turned off by "mp3" unknowingly. So I purchased meta from apple store which seems very similar. I couldn't believe how many errors I had to correct in file names before I could start moving to fixing genre tags. Example: Simon and Garfunkel vrs Simon & Garfunkel. Beatles vrs The Beatles. After that you can tailor genres to your liking. To me ACDC is "loud rock" and so I edited a new genre! Now I'm hijacking the "album artist" tag to make my own groupings. Anything you want. I use it to create a genre subset. An example is ROCK-HR, ROCK-CD and ROCK-P. This allows me to drill down to resolution formats for each genre. And its so easy and fast! Best thing since sliced bread! Cheers!
  11. If the technology exists to make a transcript of podcasts would it be possible to have transcripts posted? If not, no worries. Cheers
  12. Very glowing review. I just don't get the copper em shield and springs in the feet features. To me that is a distraction.
  13. I was one of the first to buy the BDP-1. The first platform was Loony Loon... the predecessor of Manic Moose. To be honest I wasn't thrilled with the interface(s) either. I was transitioning from a Mac mini and Hag USB converter which wasn't the best. I got over the interface pretty fast when I heard the sound quality. The Loony Loon and Manic Moose interface were quite similar. Over the years I migrated to Manic Moose only because of the Tidal streaming functionality they added to it. So what is the trade off? I have an "ancient" media server that is still supported. And here's the big one.... my wife uses it because the interface isn't continually changing. However, I am waiting for Nutty Narwhal platform to come to life. I know this means the BDP-1 won't be supported anymore...sigh. Time to review options! Please note I am a Bryston fan!
  14. Congrats to the all the people who made the decade a digital music wonderland! Chris, your article brings back fond (and frustrating) memories of finding the digital audio experience. Thanks! Looking forward to a new decade!!! What new wonders await! Cheers

    BDP-1

I have struck a bargain with my wife allowing to buy more toys if we buy more furniture..... Since I have the Bryston BP26 with the built in DAC is it worth going for the BDP1 or stick with my mac mini? The issue with the BP26DAC is that it can't go beyond 24/96 so a BDP1 may be overkill? Or should I go and get the BDA1 and BDP1 and not worry about knowing that the $1000 DAC feature in my BP26 won't be used. My macmini would just replace my 9 yr old XP machine. Plus I would need to by twice as much furniture My music is all ripped CDs but I would like to see what hi-rez is all about and am not sure if 24/96 is enough. Especially, for the the next 10 years. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
