  1. So a while back I rashly ripped all my CDs to Apple Lossless. I too have heard the benefit (albeit slight) of WAVs, but my question is this: do I a) re-rip everything to WAV or b) convert all my Apple Lossless to WAV. If i understand it correctly all the information is in the Apple Lossless it's just that it's in a compressed format. So converting to WAV should be fine right??? Has anyone tested this? I will do my own listening but I wanted some of you experiences first.
  2. he doesn't want to leave the mac switched on the whole time or to have to boot it up every time he wants to dance in the living room.
  3. I have an Ipad and Airport Express and have attached a Musical Fidelity v-dac (equivalent to you dacmagic) to the express. To be honest it sounds much better than analogue straight out (to be expected right..) but I can't tell the difference between using the ipad to control my itunes library on the mini thus streaming apple lossless and streaming 256kbps AAC directly from my IPad but we're not talking a high-end solution here really. It sounds good enough for a second system in my opinion.
  4. I have the exact same setup you describe except that I have a logitech squeezebox duet in the middle where the bridge should be. I was considering moving the MAC Mini close, ditching the logitech box, and using the USB connection but everyone I have spoken to says that leaving everything as is but swapping the Bridge in instead of the logitech would be the way to go. Just need to find the cash for the bridge. Anyone have $800 I could borrow!
  5. Naim stuff is indeed excellent. Do they do a DAC that can be used as a pre-amp?
  6. With $400 I would give the Musical fidelity V-DAC a go it performs very well at its price point. You might even have some change left over to upgrade the power supply which apparently is a worthwhile step. The other option is the Cambridge audio Dacmagic: http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/musical_fidelity_v-dac_da_processor/index1.html
  7. The Cyrus kit is sexier and British made - go for that. Also you have decent upgradeability built-in.
  8. I was interested to read your post because I have a similar setup. I was running a squeezebox into a musical fidelity V-dac then to a pre-amp. I have since moved to Canada and had to ditch the pre-amp as it was 240v. So rather than buying a new preamp here in Canada and find a 110v power supply for the V-dac I opted to go for a DAC/Preamp in one box. I went for the PS Audio Perfect wave DAC as some great deals can be had on ebay (well they can if you forget about the import duty that Canadian customs slapped me with but that's another story for another forum) Anyway the sound was better than plugging the squeezebox directly into the BOULDER power amp but not $2000 better or anything like it. So to cut a long post short my question is, would inserting the very nice benchmark or the equally nice Cyrus into the chain make much difference? I know the output of the logitech is bit perfect but god knows what jitter is being introduced by the squeezebox. My experiences with my set up leave me thinking that spending all that money on a decent DAC is the hi-fi equivalent to polishing a turd. Someone with more technical knowledge than me would probably do well to step in at this point and refute or otherwise my "findings" http://www.psaudio.com/ps/products/detail/perfectwave-dac
