  1. Tears For Fears' Songs from the Big Chair 24/96 is now on HDTracks. There is a side note which stated "2014 Remaster - Original 1983 analog recording contains digital effects". The explaination: Does it mean the quality is not that good? Why the need to use digital compressor in music production? Songs From The Big Chair | HDtracks
  2. For lossless Flac/AIFF file we have the option of AAC/MP3 lossy version. For hires 24bit 96/192 Flac/AIFF, is there a lossy format? I know this is audiophile forum and we should listen to lossless. Just curious and pls don't shot me down. Thanks.
  3. If you're head of iTunes at Apple and is planning to revamp it to target audiophiles, what changes to the software will you propose? The aim of the revamp is to make iTunes the best app for music library management and audio playback.
  4. Thanks for the pointers for new DAC models. I'm not eyeing Audioengine D1, just use it as an example. I probably not go for active speaker with built-in DAC as I need a headphone amp. So its 1. computer->USB DAC+headphone amp -> active speakers 2. computer->USB DAC+headphone amp -> amp -> speakers 3. computer -> USB DAC+Amp/headphone Amp -> speakers So many choices.
  5. Comparing the below playing 16bit 44.1khz lossless music using iTunes: 1. Mac analog 3.5mm audio out directly to Audioengine A2/A5+ 2. Mac USB to Audioengine D1 to Audioengine A2/A5+ Do you hear obvious improvement when using D1?
  6. Pioneer started incorporating AirPlay into its new receivers and Denon/Marantz is set to do the same. There is no stopping high end manufacturers incorporating AirPlay into amp or other audio equipments. Now all is needed is confirmation that AirPlay supports high-res audio. What is needed is an iTunes computer, and connected AirPlay amp. There is no need for a DAC to connect directly to the computer. AirPlay appears to be a game changer. What's your view?
  7. Current iPod/iPod touch/iPad/AppleTV can not support natively playback of 24bit audio. I believe this rumor come out as Apple is building 24-bit hardware support into its mobile devices. And if this happens, we will hear about it in iPod event this September. Negotiation with labels will not be easy, at best only selection of albums will be in high-res.
  8. >That said, I would hope Apple would sell the higher quality version when the marginal costs are so low. I think it is not so much Apple's decision about lossless format. It lies with the labels. And it is not about to change anytime soon.
  9. How should one choose between "limited" and "unlimited"? Are those hires files on HDTracks.com for example "limited" or "unlimited"?
  10. I am new to computer high resolution audio, but not aware of a standard way of referring to them. I am not referring to "SACD" or "DVD-Audio" as these are associated to physical media, but high resolution audio downloads commonly in 24/96. For "MP3" you know its lossy music, for "CD" you know its 16bit 44.1khz, these are label that make it easy for consumers to associate with the kind of quality of music. More like branding or marketing. It might be necessary to push computer high resolution audio to be mainstream. Why not for example "HD Audio" for 24/96 audio? HDTracks refers their high resolution store as "96khz/24bit Store", not as friendly as for example "DTS-HD Master Audio Store" or "HD Audio Store". Looking at Tom Petty's Mojo Blu-ray album on amazon.com, it described "This disc contains all 15 tracks from 'Mojo' in high-resolution 48K 24 bit PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.". The " DTS-HD Master Audio" is immediate and obvious about quality, but not "48K 24 bit PCM stereo". With a "HD Audio" label, it is easy for consumer to associate with the audio quality they are getting, off course enthusiasts like us know what to expect. Not sure why Tom Petty release the songs in 24/48, as 24/96 looks like the ideal standard for "HD Audio". Is 24/48 a standard Blu-ray audio format? With a "HD Audio" label, it is easier to let consumers know there is better audio quality option than CD.
  11. I understand that using NAS's RAID 5 feature with minimum 3 drives, if one of the drive is down, the NAS will still function. I can get a replacement drive for the NAS back to normal. What if the whole NAS hardware is down and is not serviceable? If I plug the hard drives into another NAS box will the data be intact? My guess is it will still work if I put the drives into the same model NAS. What if my NAS is three years old and I can not buy back the same brand and model?
  12. I have the original John Lennon Imagine CD which I ripped to aiff. My friend has the 2010 remastered CD. Is it legal for me to copy and use his ripped tracks?
  13. Under Preferences->Advanced, there are check boxed "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized", "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". Do you enable those? Would like to hear some opinion from audiophiles, thanks. Will be using only iTunes as player.
  14. Checked that the new AppleTV has both HDMI and Optical audio out. Which should I use for stereo playback with AV Receiver since AVR can accept both? Is the HDMI sound lesser than optical? Thanks
