  1. Have you considered the 'bit teleporter' system that also went on sale (for the first time) last night. It may do what you require?
  2. I'm off in an hour to get my brain cells counted. If I'm 'correct' the statement made to justify this is completely 'incorrect'. I just hope I have more than one cell or I'm going to look silly.
  3. but yes, they do, and patience usually has nice rewards. I've been waiting along with a multitude of others for a USB input and the 'mux' to come back to stock. They will, just be prepared to move like greased lightening when they do..
  4. Bill, I have to agree 100% that it is primarily the 'pro audio' side that carters 'most' for acoustics, but I think what I said in my first post here stands as well, ie most listening rooms need to be shared spaces with a family, so 'normal' acoustic treatments are a no no - which is a real shame. I tried my best to show with what I did that acoustic treatment does not need to be 'fugly' indeed, I work in there all the time and I love it - but then again I would! Anyone who has a dedicated room and does not at least try to do something (and I dont mean just carpet and settee's) is actually not hearing anything like what their kit is probably capable of, which is a real shame. I do get that for the majority out there that it is just not possible to do much, so they chase that elusive 'x'% and it costs a lot. I have no problem with that, apart from when they say 'it's not working' when it is obviously a room issue, and simply refuse to accept help on that point when given. I had no means of doing room measurements during the build process, but eventually a friend came over and did the duties. You are correct - it would have been good to see it as it went from a cavern to a man cave.. I still have that front wall to do, but am uncertain at present just which way to go with that as I do not want to lose anything of what I already have.
  5. You will find a lot of good stuff on sites such as Audio Circle and DIY Audio, or the one I found incredibly useful was (not surprisingly I guess) Music Player forums in Ethan Winer Acoustics. Incredibly helful foks made my project fun. Ethan Winer, GIK & plenty more to go at. Some of us took the whole thing very seriously - maybe a bit too serious!:- http://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/1984380/Wall_boundary_trapping#Post1984380 Good luck with the project - it will probably be by far the 'biggest bang for your buck' that you will ever make. With a bit of DIY skill serious results are easy.
  6. I do not read Alan as dissing Audiphiles at all - he is making a very relevant point. We (mostly) all fall into the trap one way or another, usually because our listening space also needs to double as a shared 'living space' or dining space, very rarely do you see a dedicated room for listening. When you do in *usually* does contain some means of sound treatment. What I read is correct and I have to say I agree with what is written. Getting the room right, or as right as can be done is by far the most important factor - way above speakers or any electronics. The interface between room and kit is vital. Problem is it is not always an environment that partners understand or enjoy, or want to spend any time in. Bit like fishing in that respect :-)
  7. Barrows has listed pretty much everything I can think of as well there. There are heaps of ways of 'modding' various boards with power supplies, alternative components, but I would personally leave all that till later and you have something built. One thing you will need is patience - The Twisted Pear duo do this lot for fun, and the products, even though announced - can take time to arrive in the shop. Your Off Ramp will be a stunningly good place to start and removes the need for the USB module. I must admit that I am seriously considering this option myself at present and then to the forthcoming 'Bit Transporter' to add the required length to the I2S connection. Good luck & keep us posted please.
  8. That all was. I admit to not having read any of it before as I inevitably find 'cable wars' to turn into circular arguments very quickly, then decline into ever deeper ways of cynically calling each other names. But then I'm English, reading a lot of British forums, (hmm English, British - does it matter?) this entire thread has actually kept well within the bounds of decent debate for the most part, which is very refreshing. I would like to ask a couple of questions if I may, I'm no scientist, but love physics and chemistry, I am aware of what should happen, but then I'm also happy to admit that my ears are trusted by my brain as well. Now what would happen if BOTH sides were actually scientifically correct? No, I'm not bonkers, this is a serious question. Someone has already mentioned that the laws of physics cannot be broken, and I 100% agree with this, but it has also been said that we do not know all there is to know, and I am also certain of that. So a set of purely scientific and repeatable tests prove that cables X, Y, & Z do exactly as they were expected to and the results were exactly as expected they would be under test conditions. Then, while not being tested, a completely different set of results were obtained, and for these results there is no possible know explanation (at this current time). A conundrum then exists - which to believe? They cannot both be correct? Or can they? Which side of the reality fence do you want to sit on? It has also been said here that there is stuff going on that we do not understand / know how to test. Now if I said the above experiment can be done,(or one very similar to it) and repeated, in a school lab, and the results were always the same every time (ie - two sets of different results) what would it prove and say of human nature? Can we accept that not everything acts as it should do all of the time - or do they have a secret life all of their own? Barrows said something that sparked this memory in my head from some old science stuff we did at school with electrons / particles and was also recently on the TV. My apologies for the length of post, but would honestly like to read your thoughts on the above. Could it ever be acceptable to the many that both can actually be correct?
  9. for my ordered parts to arrive I have been re-reading the (many hundreds) of pages regarding the Buff II and Legato builds. I ordered and paid for 20 TP0604's, only to get an email telling me that he only has 2 left (that will be the two I ordered for spares then) - so now I'm going hunting for some more. Thousands of references to data sheets, but very few selling the little blighters! Had my sanity questioned for asking if it was worthwhile swapping out any resistors to Z foils and was roundly told to try each swapout first before making a decision. That could be expensive if I decide I dont like the Duelund caps i'm considering, dont think they do try before you buy! Ah well, back to reading. Still cannot find any notation about the wiring of 2 mono BII's into two Legato II's - to get balanced XLR output. I've see the Ivy design and it takes the balanced connection from the SE outputs, which I was not actually going to put the parts in for on the board. Anyone had experience of this here please?
  10. Doh, Just reading the tweakers thread for the second time as I know I read about them just before I fell of the edge of the world. I'll check out the III thread now! Cheers.
  11. Ok, so the order for Paul Hynes is :- For the two buffalo II DAC boards:- 2 off S1701v2ADJ 6 off Z7803v3ADJ 2 off Z7803v3ADJ HP 10 off PR3iDC-05v4ADJ 10 off PR3iAC-12ADJ For the two Legato boards 2 off PR3iAC-15ADJ 2 off NR3iAC-15ADJ For transformers Canterbury Windings will be supplying :- 10 x 240v to 12-0-12 centre tapped 4 x 240v to 15-0-15 centre tapped All 100Va, audio grade with electrostatic screen & goss bands. The idea behind all of this is to keep every single ground plane seperate from each other and supply clean power to each and every component that needs it. It will obviously have a ton of extra 'headroom' in the PSU dept. I intend to house all of the main power transformers outside of the listening room, (I dont need the extra heat and any hum whatsoever in there thank you). On the inside wall I aim to have two plates of female cannon sockets (10 x 12v & 4 x 15v). From these I can then draw the raw AC required by the pre regulators. At least that is the current plan. I have started to re read all of the pages I had / have stored regarding builds that others have completed, but remember some things that I just cannot find any longer - these are the questions that I will ask when I come amongst them. One that is sticking in my head at the moment is that I am certain that a good twek was to change the transistors that were supplied with the Legato II board to those now supplied in the Legato III? Any ideas on this at all please? Part no's & are the same amount used, is the pin layout the same? I apologise in advance if this is something that has been covered in here - but I can't find it! Cheers for now. Steve.
  12. Hello Barrows, we corresponded last year about my proposed Buffalo / Legato II build. Only problem is my 'life' decided that it was not going to be able to happen until now.. I'm in the position of having two fully built 'stock' Legato II and two bare boards ready to stuff with whatever I can afford. I have still two Buffalo II dacs complete in their boxes ready to play with. I have been in touch with Paul Hynes and resurected the design we had for the power supply for both the I/V & DAC. Tomorrow I hope to order a whole bunch of nice supplies from Paul & a few transformers from Canterbury windings specifically wound for this project. I would like, if possible, to tag along here and pick up on a few of your ideas and build suggestions. I'm (obviously) looking to build a dual mono version to the best I can. Looks like we still have a wait for a USB input, but the new 'Teleporter' looks a neat bit of trick kit. If it's ok I'll drop back later with a few questions!
  13. I see asking what should be a very important question - even politely - gains not a response, just more technical talk. Tipper - as per my above post, our chances of getting a high quality, robust and well thought out connector will never see the light of day if it cannot be made ultra cheap and enclose encryption. Mind you, those selling even cheap cables and those who repair product would not be to happy about it. I have no problem with going USB3 - USB (whatever) but would like to see a rise in musical enjoyment as a benefit, or why bother? Just because you need the latest bling? Maybe I'm getting too old for this.
  14. Just to politely ask again, just what is USB3 going to do for music reproduction that USB2 cannot do already? Is it soldered to the board with something different, does it use something in it's construction that is going to help music sound better? No? So it's all down to codecs and bandwidths - huge data rates (which we still don't use at present, and, lets face it - hi res music is hardly being given away with cornflakes) stuff like that. I honestly want to know! As an actual mechanical interface I think of it as something akin to the scart lead, ie, it could have been done way, way better. But the designers of it simply have no sympathy in what audio would like (please - something robust that won't break the first time you sneeze on it).
  15. It's my guess that by the time USB is fully implemented into real hifi (ie - high end kit and made to work to the Nth degree correctly and with every file type - jitter free with all the bells and whistles ) USB, should it still be used will be on USB24. The PC world moves at one pace - audio at another. Audio is but an absolutely minute thought in the world of these designers. Copy Protection along with huge data rate transfer is somewhat higher on their 'to do' list. If you have a SOTA system now - take some time, smell the coffee and enjoy the music it can make. Are you honestly expecting 'that' much of an increase in sound quality? I'm not. Diminishing returns set in a good while ago.
