  1. A friend of mine sent an email today wanting a recommendation for an external solid state hard drive for a pc to be used for music. I know nothing about these drives so I told him I'd post this here and then told him to join! Please help with a recommendation. Thanks.
  2. Just bought an iMac with 2 external 2tb hard drives. I know how to set up the back up but i want my iTunes to load directly on the other hard drive, bypassing the internal hard drive altogether. As a lifelong pc user I am stumped. Also I used the firewire for the primary hard drive and usb as the secondary. Does this cause any issues? I had about 30,000 songs on a 1 tb hard drive with the pc but i will use this iMac strictly as a music server. Thanks in advance for any help.
  3. According to w4s today, the dac in the integrated and the uDac are the same unit. $1500 for 100 reliable watts/channel with a decent dac seems like a real bargain. As for styling would a fancy box with the same guts for $2000 be a better buy? Are you bling or audio performance?
  4. Just found out my uDac was shipped today. Same dac as in the mini-int unit. The server is still 2-3 weeks away. Going to use mine at work with a set of powered Quads.
  5. I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago along with a few others. I have probably got 35-40 hdtracks downloads but I have to confess this one has me stumped. No high end to speak of and the midrange just sounds weird. I had the original recording and a Japanese half speed on lp that were better, but they were "hot" in the high end. I was really happy with the Chicago V and Credence Clearwater Revival was excellent (much better than the DCC version on cd). I chalked it up to experience as like every one else (of their honest) I have bought my fair share of recordings (regardless of pressing or format) that didn't sound right. Funny we never blamed the recording engineers back in the day. I guess our expectations were much lower then.
  6. I downloaded the new Herman Hermits and Joni Mitchell albums last night. Download took less than 15 minutes and went smoothly without any hiccups.
  7. Hey everybody! I am happy to report that this morning I downloaded 3 albums from hdtracks. While I really haven't had any issues to complain aboutup to now, their download speed was always kind of slow. I am happy to announce that I downloaded 3 flac albums (2 96/24 and 1 48/24) in less time than it use to take 1 album. I have not changed anything in my system so I can only assume that hdtracks has improved their download equipment!
  8. My son wants to use his pc as a music server. I use Media Monkey Gold and when I showed it to him he asked a simple question, "Other than flac which I won't use...why should I use it instead of iTunes"? I could not answer him. I need help. How do I explain the differences if all he is going to do is burn cd's to music files? At this point he is not as absorbed in the high end like I am so hi rez has not been a priority and I doubt it ever will be.
  9. Glad to help. May I suggest for issues with other manufacturer's to use the AudioGon website. On the right side under "Resources" there is an "Industry Directory" subtitle which directs you to alot of the audio industry. FWIW hdtracks, for those that do not know, is a part of Chesky Records, which is the number I gave in an earlier post.
  10. My experience with alot of audio manufacturer's is their response to emails is usually horrible. If you want your problem usually fixed easily and promptly with hdtracks, do it the old fashioned way...call them 212-586-7799. I have called them a few times to correct an issue that was their fault and 1 issue that was my fault. Both times I was directed to support techs and issues were taken care of. Only problem I had was no tech support during last winter's snowstorm but that was totally understandable. I have also found that trying to get in touch with manufacturer's during big audio shows such as rmaf and ces is difficult as their support staff is usually involved with their show displays. I have found a number of companies do not have proper staffing to support email issues. They would be actually better off not even listing email address for support issues as the above complaints show that no response is much worse than not having email support.
  11. Quad makes 2 powered speakers, the 11L and the 12L that are great speakers for computer audio. Small and affordable they look good, can be used with internal or external amps, but most importantly, sound great!
  12. I sent emails to HD Tracks with no response. I then found Chesky's phone number under Industry Directory at Audiogon, called them and got excellent service from the person answering the phone to the tech support people I dealt with. About a week later I accidently erased an HD flac file (don't ask)so I called them up for help and the matter was fixed in about 5 minutes. I have found that alot of audio hardware/software companies do not respond to emails real well (Example Cayin and Boston Acoustics) but most do a very good job if you call with a matter. Keep in mind a number of smaller companies have limited staffs so if you are trying to contact them during CES or RMAF or other shows, the response time may be slow. I want to give kudos to Linn, Shahinian,Quad's distributor in U.S.,TAS, Hi-Fi+, and Stereophile for outstanding response help when contacting them by email. McIntosh gives great phone help as well to name just a few of the great customer service companies.
  13. First off, I have no association with Linn or a dealer representing Linn. I just want to say that my experience with Linn when it comes to any quality issues is far better than just about anyone else that I have dealt with in the audio/music business in the last 30 years. If there is an issue, they will get to the problem, correct it and make it right for their customers. Be patient...they will make it right! As for the others...
  14. While not for the actual purpose you described, I wanted to list my imports, audiophile and box sets into different sub catagories under the basic, rock, classical, jazz, etc... I used itunes and used the column "comment" to list the sub-type of music. Then when needed or wanted I pulled up the music based on that catagory (grouping). It works excellent. This may help you.
