  1. Poo, When I go to the Java Preferences folder, I only get the "Applets" list, & there are only two versions listed: JS2E 5.0, & JS2E 1.4.2. The 5.0 version is checked and is listed first in the box at the middle of the page. I don't see anything associated with "applications". Do I need to look somewhere else? Anything else to check? thanks, Tim
  2. I am having difficulty with downloading tracks; the download manager keeps freezing up. Using Mac OS 10.4.11, Safari 3.2.1, and Java 8. Internet connection is via DSL. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?
  3. Erik, Great idea. Did you use the adhesive or non-adhesive ERS paper? That stuff is not cheap from partsconnexion.com.... Tim
  4. Thanks Tim! Should I manually move the music folder with the previously burned files that is on my desktop machine, to the external drive, and then change the settings in preferences?
  5. Could someone help with more specific info on how to put the music folder in a separate location? Problem: my iTunes library is at 60GB, and I have barely begun to rip everything I have on CD. My HD is only 160G, and almost full. Is there a way to transfer the data to an EXT HD, and have it be part of the iTunes library on the main HD, or should I just set up the data folder on the EXT HD? Will ITunes be able to find it? Another problem is that the HD in question (La Cie) is noisy when it is spinning. Thanks for you help.
  6. Indeed, MacBook Pros are on sale at Expercom right now. Until Sep 30th. (No connection between myself and Expercom)
  7. By system, I mean computer. Perhaps as a mid-level system: xxx HD wired to Apple Extreme wireless to MacBook Pro xxx toslink cable to xxx DAC to owner provided stereo system. TAS & Stereophile do system recommendations from time to time; componenets with good synergy at price ranges from low to high.
  8. Which manufacturers make DAC's that have adjustable sample rates? I know that the PS Audio does 24/96 and 24/192. Are there DAC's that can do other rates such as 24/88.2, etc?
  9. Chris, in this thread: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/node/699, you mention that you are working on some "enhancements" to the site, regarding some sort of primer for neophytes. As one who is trying to put together the info in my mind before I jump in, i would like to offer a couple of requests: -make flow chart diagrams, showing position of various components, and the relative merits/disadvantages of sequencing in a particular order. -suggest complete mid-level, and entry-level systems, with components that work together synergistically. thanks
  10. Ah, good. So really, I could just as easily use an Express hooked up to a HD as well...?
  11. Chris, in the example above: External HD > Airport Extreme > MacBook Pro > cable > DAC > amp, what is the maximum bit rate that is delivered to the DAC, assuming a stock laptop? Put another way, will the data streamed by the AE be limited by anything?
  12. So with an all-tube setup (ARC SP-8, VTL monoblocks) something like the Benchmark might not sound too "brittle & dry"? Could someone give me an example of a system where a NOS DAC would sound best?
  13. Why would I choose one over the other? Is it more difficult to design a decent NOS DAC?
  14. Have been reading here on the site, and really learning a lot. One question I have is about the future of digital formats, given the interest in server based music systems. If I understand correctly there are not a lot of 24/96, recordings available at the moment. Is there some other high-sample rate format that could ultimately supplant 16/44.1? That being said, is the ability to work with 24/96 over USB worth considering in the purchase of a DAC? Which DAC's currently being sold can handle this format?
