  1. DVDimager seemed to hang on me a few times and I gave it 10 hours to work. I'll try it again. But after all my bluster about the negative reviews, I bought Toast 10 Pro cause it has HD, Soundsoap, and other programs. I'll try to report back on my progress when I can get to it. Thank you very much Mistermuse for the discussion and help.
  2. Thank you mistermuse. Since my last post my focus has shifted to cleanest signal (for Melodyne) instead of warmth and fullness of signal, so I'm currently going with the XLR line level (-10 dBV) method direct from the tape deck with Dolby Noise Reduction C turned on, on the deck. I'm curious about the choice of inputs XLR line level (4 dBV) versus XLR line level (-10 dBV). When is one better than the other I wonder? I'm a newbie and am just trying to learn. Also curious about the Dolby setting. Seemed to cut out a lot of hiss. Another reason for going line level is that I have so many tapes and I don't know what the peak levels are and with line level signal I can "set it and forget it." Finally, I wonder how all these choices will affect Melodyne recognizing the music on the digitized recordings? Aspects of the above are better for a melodyne forum, but I though I'd give it a shot. Thanks again. Stu
  3. I guess I'll need to closely watch the levels all the time if I use instrument cables and inputs. How much detail and warmth of sound am I giving up by doing everything "line level" signal with the XLRs?
  4. I am a newbie and I want to make copies of audio cassettes, and like mistermuse I too can't control levels in Garageband when connecting via RCA to XLR cables using the Duets inputs XLR line -10dBV, but yes using the Duet instrument inputs setting and Duet instrument 1&2 cables. This appears to be normal operating procedure according to Apogee -- Apogee tutorial http://video.apogeedigital.com/2008/06/duet-vinyl-transfer/ where they say to use RCA to XLR cables and XLR line -10dBV inputs. However I like the sound of the recordings better doing the alternative with Duet instrument cables and inputs with higher levels when I made a couple of recordings. (Another difference in the comparison is I connected directly to the tape player when I went the XLR route and to a "record out" on my stereo receiver when I went the instrument input route). I plan to digitize and review years of personal recordings from handheld cassette players with song ideas and general musings. I wonder which option I should use? I'd also appreciate any other feedback to broaden my knowledge. Thank you. Stu
