  1. I've just discovered a website that offers a few free hi-res 24/96 downloads. The difference in clarity between these and the usual iTunes download formats is absolutely stunning. I especially enjoyed the multiplicity of genres in the CAS 2010 mix. www.bluecoastrecords.com Enjoy!
  2. I tried the other USB port, but the same degradation in quality remains with the DAC... Perhaps a Firewire or Toslink connection might be better? I should have tested the highest end DAC available, which would haved clearly defined for me the difference between DAC and no DAC. I will do so this week and report back. Then I can determine if I am truly deaf or not. I forgot to mention that I am also running a Panamax power conditioner and Oyaide mini-RCA connectors from DAC to Woo.
  3. Mmm...not sure if I can recollect which blogs exactly, but this is one link I've found since your email: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/397617/audio-quality-of-the-new-macbook-pro I'm very new to DAC tech, and I don't speak digital signal processing very well. In my day, a great stereo was bought with all your student loan money, and I ended up with a 100wpc SAE integrated amp, Dual turntable with Ortofon cartridge, and Klipsch Cornwalls downstream of 14ga speaker wire. Party time! These days I am imprisoned in a condo, so lung-contusing bass or glass-shattering soprano voices are things of the past. I'm very new to DAC tech and don't speak digital signal processing lingo very well. So, I've turned to excellent headphones (hearkening back to my philosophy of youth that great speakers are a must), a very good entry level audiophile tube amp, and what I thought was a good entry level DAC. I now know that, besides great circuitry (which was touted about the Headroom DAC), there is something called "implementation". I guess that's my next lesson in DSP-speak ;-) Thanks for your comment, and I'll take your more informed opinion about the MBP DAC very seriously and give a higher end product a chance!
  4. Your experience with the Total Bithead DAC is exactly mine with the Headroom Ultra Micro DAC. With MBP -> DAC -> Woo Audio WA3 amp -> Beyerdynamic T1's, when compared to no DAC, the highs were super-sibilant and frankly irritating, with an overall much flatter, less rounded sound. I am very disappointed with the Headroom DAC. From what I've read on blogs so far, the MBP built-in DAC is actually very good and usually much better than any external DAC under $1500. I live in the GTA and will be visiting my favourite store, Planet of Sound, to see if a top end DAC (Weiss) or even a mid-high DAC (Graham Slee) will make any noticeable improvement.
