  1. I've been using lubuntu for some time on my eee laptop .... it runs fantastically fast .....if your up to the challenge put the xmonad desktop on it and be amaized with how fast it can make an old machine go .... as far as sound goes .... all use the same linux backend so we're golden ..... I'm a fan of MOC player for my older slower machines .... text based Midnight commander like audio player .... t
  2. Hi Folks .... I was pretty excited when I found this site the other day .... I've been looking for a good place to have a computer oriented audio discussion. That being said, Is any one out there using anything open source .... linux based ... I've got a pretty decent listening system ... ( carver / Dalquist ) and I've been playing with ways to get FLAC over to it from my linux based music server for a long time .... most recently for 20$ I built a music server from a first generation xbox that I got on freecycle and installed XBMC on it .... I upgraded from the xbox branded audio Y cables to a set of monster xbox cables ..... while not even close to my blue heaven interconnects, nice cables .... after all is said and done I have about 2.5 terrabytes of flac streaming across my network .... .... It sounds spectacular ... not even an ounce of commercial software in the mix .... I'm not going to argue about it being even close to some of the hardware you folks are discussing on this site .... but Hey .... 20$.... I'm still suffering on the D/A side of things on paper, but one could argue that micrsoft did a lot of work on the original xbox to make the D/A better than anything else out there ... ....I have no complaints.... that being said .... Mapleshade makes a really nice 1/8 plug to RCA adapter thats been treated and tested like crazy ... I've got that on another computer based system that goes into a Harman Kardon A300 Tube Amp .... coming out of the board sound card, its about as bad as it can get in terms of purity ... but I'm getting spectacular sound improvements with the Mapleshade adapter into a set of Synergistic Research cables .... I just think there are some awesome ways to have this Love and do it relatively cheap. t
