  1. The Mk III are just arriving here in the states. They look great on paper.
  2. My desktop audio journey, I have about 34 inches between where speakers can be and where I sit. 1. Headphones (grado and sennheiser and beyere - tubes and solid state) - then I realized i really didn't like listening to headphones all that much compared to speakers, so I moved on Sold off 2. Focal CMS40 with a Mytek 192Stereo DSD had fun with a lot of this. Two things caused a change 1. Didn't sound as good as a NAD/Psb system in terms of detail 2. I became more objectivist and thought the Mytek was overkill for my needs (basically - i did some blind A/B testing) Sold off 3. Bought a Nad D3020 and P3esr 1. A *touch* too big and bright for how close they are too me. 2. Nad D3020 is great - as an objectivist convert I don't believe difference in electronics are substantial enough to be identifiable in a meaningful way.
  3. Sorry I couldn't find an answer in this thread to a question I had as well - which is how does a digital volume control work with DSD?
  4. APO DSD A Love Supreme APO DSD Coltrane (Impulse) APO DSD Black Saint Sinner Lady HDTracks 96/24 VU (self titled) Music Matters Vinyl 45 RPM Out To Lunch (doesn't really count but i bought it directly while searching for other high res) David Bowie Ziggy 2012 Remaster DVD-V 96/24 (the one that is bundled with the 180g LP) Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks Mofi SACD (thanks Ted_B for helping me get it off the disk)
  5. I got a quick reply I thought you might be interested in (I hope they don't mind me publishing this) "Michal passed along this question to me. I think the Jriver dsd up sampler is pretty good. It has a positive effect on most PCM music. Though I will say that low dynamic content (ie loud pop or rock) has less an effect. I've only used it in 2xdsd mode on the fly conversion. The rendered version is clearly easier on system resources but non real time. If you're interested download korgs audiogate software and compare their dsd up sampler. It's at least some comparison to a different flavor of sound. (I prefer j river myself) All the best "
  6. Anybody talk to Mytek about what they think about the J River to DSD converter? I emailed [email protected] to inquire I would love to know what experts think about it. Have searched and found a few positives. I am doing it for fun. I like it. Thanks
  7. I use firewire because being off the USB bus means I never have any latency or hangups (which I have had with USB) I can convert to DSD in realtime (jriver) with firewire and couldn't with USB. All those reasons are enough for me.
  8. Have a mytek 192 and don't listen enough on the go to buy the Pono device but very excited about more options for higher quality downloads. I'd buy a lot more music on an impulse if everything were at least available at CD quality. Excited to see a focus on sound quality again in the mainstream. Also love the idea of knowing more about the files (mastering conversion history) I don't think I can hear differences between high rez on CD. (To be honest I tried A-B with mp3s and really can't hear a difference - i'm ape eared I guess)
  9. Thanks for the info - I think I was so uninformed I didn't ask very good questions.
  10. I have searched this thread and have a follow up question about ideal volume range. I have a pair of focal CMS40, xlr cables and my Mytek. To make sure I had adequate headroom, I thought I would turn the volume down on the focals very low and turn the Mytek on Bypass mode. This resulted in extremely distorted music. I then adjusted the Focal's too +4db input (from -10db) and this sounded better but still very distorted. I finally pulled the jumpers and I still have some distortion on bypass but it isn't as bad. So I have a couple/few of questions: 1. Does this mean the Focal's are a poor match for the Mytek? 2. In a Mytek => Active Monitor setup what is the ideal analogue volume range to be using on the Mytek? (decibels) 3. What is the idea volume trim on an active monitor (assuming nominal settings of -66 to 0 db) Thanks so much in advance!
  11. I had been playing with AE Sample Rate Manager. Kevin at HRT didn't believe there should be an improvement in performance with upsampling - although he acknowledged it could sound "different" thanks
  12. If a typical 8x oversampling DAC chip is fed something higher than 44.1 samples (let's say 96khz) does it still 8x oversample that signal? (e.g. to 768khz) thanks
  13. I bought Amarra Junior - not the world's most refined seeming software - but it sounds great to me. I have the 2011 version of an HRT II+ going into a meier concerto headphone amp into a pair of senn hd650. Amarra has just made everything seem more full and smooth. My question is do you believe it is more like the "loudness" circuit on an old receiver. Or do you believe it is more "correct?" Honestly if I hadn't seen such great reviews I would have thought it was midfi trickery.
