  1. So I checked this out. It is indeed a noisly little bugger when you first insert a disc and when it loads the disc info and first hit PLAY. Almost like a typical computer optical drive. Once it is playing though, it is very quiet. I can skip songs etc without any whirring or noises.
  2. I didn't notice any spinning noise, but then again I sit several feet away. I'll try to remember to listen for this. As for the Orpheus vs Cantata comparison, I don't have much I can add. In Alan's system, they sounded very similar, but we were driving the Cantata via spdif which was less than ideal (if I understand correctly). I have heard the Orpheus in my system a few times, but I was using different electronics back then. My impressions, each time, were that it was very detailed, upper frequencies were very smooth, but overall it was on the lean side. The Cantata is not lean in my system, but again - I'm using different electronics (tube preamp vs solid state). I'm sure Alan will bring his Orpheus back down in the near future and we'll do a comparison in my system.
  3. I'm the friend Alan mentions. I have the Cantata in my system now and am blown away by the difference that it had made. Detail retrieval is top notch and almost everything I play sounds fantastic. I am over the moon. I want to reiterate what Alan mentioned about CD playback. We initially heard it (and make a quick judgement) with just one CD. This CD, which wasn't mine, is now suspect as I have played various CDs through the Cantata and the sound is on par with using the unit as a DAC from a music server. I am so floored with the sound of this DAC that if I owned it before ordering new speakers (which are due to arrive this week), I might have remained with my current speakers, the difference is that profound to my ears.
