  2. Very informative, efficient format! Looking forward to episode 7.
  3. As opposed to some of the above I did enjoy the pictures. They took me back to the eighties, when I was attending Hifi shows as a kid, impressed by all the huge Tannoy's, B&W's, and Kef's driven by chunky Luxman amps. As the pictures show: visually not much has changed. Sentimental yourney: yes. Longing for those days: no.
  4. It certainly is possible to use the cabinets as a starting point for a pair of DIY speakers. You´ll probably have to add a new front panel to fit the new drivers, but this will only strenghten the cabinet. While you´re at it you may want to add bitumen pads to the insides of the side panels to further reduce panel resonance. The following DIY pages will provide you with plenty of examples of high quality kits for cabinets of comparible size: http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/download.html and http://www.zaphaudio.com/
  5. ...and use the fostex fe103en (nice choice btw) in the (DIY) horn enclosure Fostex designed for it: http://www.europe-audio.com/document.asp?document_id=2319&link=datasheetsfostex103e_encl.pdf This will give you mega-fast bass down to 50hz. Also, the cone excursion will be smaller than when mounted in a small bass-reflex enclosure, which will lead to cleaner mids and highs. And...the budget you mentioned won´t buy you a sub that matches the quality and speed of the fostex driver. Share a picture of the finished result and some words on the sound quality pls.
  6. Wow, great post! I've been looking forward to this for months. Really amazing how the CAPS has stirred things up, and how many people are posting back. I'm definitely going to give it a try, once I finished the speakers I'm currently working on, and will get back with the result.
  7. I would like to draw your attention to the new line of diy high-end speakers from Visaton. I've used their units before and can confirm this is great quality for reasonable money. http://www.visaton.de/en/bauvorschlaege/new_products/index.html
  8. Go listen and decide for yourself! I love upgraded vintage studiomonitors like Tannoy's little red monitor and JBL's. Big fun with Joy Division and New Order, but not really suited to orchestral and chamber music. FYI: http://www.jantzen-audio.com/download/JBL-L100_website-article_B.pdf But my real advise is: build a speakerkit. There are many speaker builders that have published kits that are reknowned worldwide, like www.zaphaudio.com and www.humblehomemadehifi.nl. The big advantage is that, next to saving you hundreds of $, these kits allow you to modify the sound to your liking by tweaking the crossover.
  9. Hey CA readers: happy 2011! OT: CA helped me to decide to build a PC based music server for myself. And to buy a Linn Majik/iPad/NAS for a family member, looking for good sound and ease of use. Batch conversion of his CD collection to FLAC was done by the Linn dealer, a real prerequisite when your CD collection is huge. All this was facilitated by the insights gathered reading CA, hats off to everyone adding superb content to this site.
  10. Hi Chris, can't wait to see what you'll come up with! <br /> <br /> Just out of curiosity: will you be testing Voyage MPD as an OS for the new C.A.P.S.?<br /> <br /> Rgds,<br /> <br /> Simon
  11. An interesting alternative you may fancy comes in the form of the iPad. Another thread here describes how to connect it to an external DAC via Apple's Camera Connection Kit.
  12. You may want to look at the Asus EeeBox PC EB1501P: http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=TjrpGyB7Ohm367YS When it comes to price/performance a doubt anything can beat it. Note that it comes with USB3 and eSATA. I would personally replace the harddrive with a SSD, but it will add some $ ofcourse. The Nvidia ION graphics is a nice bonus which will pay off once you add a touchscreen. Windows® 7 Home Premium Intel® Atom™ Processor D525 Dual Core Memory DDR3 SO-DIMM 2GB (up to 4GB) Storage SATA 2.5'' 250GB/320GB HDD + ASUS WebStorage Trial Optical Drive Slim Slot-in Super Multi DVD-RW Chipset Intel® NM10 Graphics Next-Generation NVIDIA® ION™(GT218-ION™) LAN 10/100/1000 Mbps Wireless WLAN 802.11b/g/n @2.4GHz Front I/O port •Card Reader x 1 (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC) •USB3.0 x2 •Headphone-out jack x 1 •MIC x 1 Rear I/O port •Built-in Wi-Fi antenna x1 •USB 2.0 x 4 •HDMI out x1 •eSATA x1 •Audio jack (S/PDIF out) x1 •Lan RJ-45 x1 Ofcourse there's an alternative out there...
  13. b) with a preference to a Sooloos-like solution, with integrated large touch screen. What's your own opinion, and why do you care?
  14. Hi Mike, This scenario is what they invented LAN fileservers for. You could do yourself a huge favor connecting a NAS to your router, thus making it accessible for your mac and pc. It will save you loads of time in comparison to a scenario where you would have to synchronize two NAS's manually. If, for the sake of argument, you would opt for 2 separate NAS's, you could periodically connect them both to your pc and use Microsoft's excellent (and free) Synctoy to keep their content in sync. To speed up the process you may want to use eSATA external drives (if your systems support it) in stead of USB or Firewire, both of which are really slow for massive file transfers. Personally i'm hesitant using WiFi, so i'm using a cabled lan. Afaik there's no degradation to the sound quality in this setup. Simon
  15. Folks looking for a faster C.A.P.S. may want to check out http://www.fit-pc.com/web/<br /> <br /> I like the industrial design. Prices are reasonable.<br /> <br /> Just to let you know,<br /> <br /> Regards, <br /> <br /> Simon
