  1. The Rhino "Quadio" series features some outstanding 1970's immersive 4.0 mixes indeed, but what it really comes down to is the album titles, the music, they are albums which we still enjoying listening to. "Paranoid" is an obvious crown jewel of the first four bunch, but all of the selections here are smartly curaited. It also does not hurt that they are priced and positioned so that it makes sense to just get and collect them all and be done with it. It's actually much less expensive than quad LPs and tapes were back in 73/74. It's also worth mentioning that there is a Chicago "Quadio" box set that contains every album for which was given a quadraphonic mix in the 70s including their "Greatest Hits" album, at 9 discs total. Now out-of-print and now demanding a few c-notes to acquire, I suspect that there will eventually be another limited run of this box set. If the series continues to be a success, a repress of that set seems a no-brainer. https://www.discogs.com/release/8760859-Chicago-Quadio
  2. This 2020 box set of 4-BR discs (with original 70's Quadraphonic mixes) has been sold out in the US for nearly a year, but seems the UK Rhino store Dig has a few left. I hear they are down to less than 20 sets remaining. So this is the last chace on a Doobies "Quadio" box at normal retail price. $80 or there about before shipping. Just a last chance on this for those that like the "Quadio" series. 3. The four "Quadio" titles that were up for ordering Jan. 19th from Rhino have arrived at my listening room and they are amazing! Got 'em all within 6 days after placing the order (some were sent separately from the pack) If anyone was on the fence about a few of these (or more), and maybe getting the four-pack bundle deal, it's a mix 'n match, any four (see first post) of the BluRay titles for $79.98, and spending $100 gets the free shipping. These do show up at Amazon 30 days after Rhino - I believe this is the better deal especially if you desire four or more of them. I don't work for Rhino but I do really like this series and think these are amazing immersive 4.0 quad album titles, and price point is pretty attractive. Big fan of 70's 4.0 quad especially when the albums are this hot. Hope this quarterly quadraphonic BR series continues into the future for quite a while. https://store.rhino.com/en/rhino-store/special-edition-shops/quadio/quadio-bundle-3/081227815486.html
  4. I feel this way about a lot of 5.1 & 4.0 mixes of favorite albums: "Remain in Light" "Boys and Girls" "Tubular Bells" "Santana III" "Discipline" and even "Close to the Edge" - it's really hard for me to go back to stereo listening for many albums that came out in immersive surround on modern digital formats. Not much to do with compression, but the involving performances in what I think is a better sound presentation. More spacious and discreetly involving - especially when you think you know the given album really well from it's stereo incarnation.
  5. Oh Great! You found the four pack bundle savings, and you got the free shipping as well, way to go if you like the titles being offered. You'll love these as the mastering is smooth, and not bricked or anything severe. Vintage analog surround meets state of the art digital. And that AWB mix (coming in Jan.) is said to be a mind blower. Glad you are excited like I am. Quad demo material here for sure.
  6. Not sure how many folks know about this (not seen it mentioned here yet) series of immersive 24/192kHz high-res reissues that Rhino is releasing quarterly now as of this past summer. I'm so completely in stoked about these "Quadio" discs finally coming out now - four at a time every three months or so. Originally mixed to quad in the 70's and issued on various formats back then including LPs, 8-Track tapes, and sometimes Reel-to-Reel tapes. These are of course all-analog "period" mixes, and often with the original album producers and engineers involved. These Blu-Ray discs feature not only the 4.0 Quadraphonic 70's mixes in 24/192kHz, but new Hi-Resolution remastering of the stereo mixes as well. They come in SACD style "Super Jewel" cases which I think is pretty cool. And in my opinion the previous releases have been very high-quality, and solid musical choices, with no duds in any way. Great music - and all with very fine sounding 4.0 quad mixes that hold up well next to the more modern 5.1 surround things we've seen over the past decade plus. A great thing here is the series has been (since June '23) releasing 4 titles every three months with the next four Quadio BRs coming up for us on Jan. 19th 2024. Not only that, but look at the strong artist/album titles that they have issued below. It's all about the music for me really regardless if it is in immersive surround or just high-res stereo. These titles really do hit the spot imo. In fact I think that Rhino's "Quadio" series qualifies as the finest reissue series of 70's original quad masters ever undertaken by any label. Title for title the quality of the 4.0 mixes, mastering and choice titles from Warner, Reprise, Atlantic labels is pretty stellar. 7. I have a question that is likely already asked and answered, but I'll shoot anyway. I'm backing up my 11TBs of data from 3 internal drives to a bunch of 2TB external USB drives. How much free space should I leave on each drive to be safe and not over stuff a drive? I know leaving some space unused is desirable, but not sure how much.
  8. Very nice to know, thanks for follow up.
  9. Two Jr. members heard an improvement, no further comments, no answers at all. Nothing really worth linking to imo. I use JRiver, and heard no improvement when I moved up to vers. 23. It sounds fine to me anyway.
  10. Quad is a mixing technique. It is found on many different format discs. When it is found on SACD, or a lossless format like DVD-A and BluRay it blows DTS outta the water. DTS is just a (lossy) deliver system, and not a mixing choice.
  11. For every pink-pong so-called "gimmick" there are several wonderful well thought out quad mixes found on SACD lovingly transferred from 70's recordings. Many listeners prefer Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Tull's Aqualung in their original quad mixes over the more recent 5.1 mixed album. These vintage quadraphonic mixes are but a few of the hundreds that have been resurrected in the modern era on SACD, BluRay, or DVD. Audio Fidelity was issuing many until they decided on closing up shop, as it seems Dutton - Vocallion in the UK have stepped up in their place with many audiophile grade quad titles on SACD. With so many folks owning home theater and surround audio systems in this day and age, it was a no-brainer to get at least some of these classic vintage 4.0 mixes out there in a good format that works. The record companies seem to have come to a conclusion about releasing surround music, and that is adding to to a big DELUXE box set, helps the bottom line more than a standalone product will. (See recent Beatles, Hendrix, Lennon sets) It's really not at all over for quadraphonic & 5.1 surround for music listening.
  12. When I am playing multichannel files from DSF in JRiver 23 I get a popup warning screen that this file canoont play with current settinhgs, and would I like to convert this file to 96hz/64 so it can be played. After I agree and let it change settings, the file now plays but it's not hear in rear/surround speakers at all. When I go and change the output channels selection to 5.1 my 4.0 and 5.1 dsf music is now heard like it is intended. Interesting thing is my other stereo music files also play fine (by my ears I think) from FLAC. But my DTS encoded CDs like Ohio Players - Fire, and the McCartney / Wings do not play but instead you hear the loud snow of undecoded DTS. I can go back to my channels settings and select "Source Number of Channels" and bingo, my DTS is coming through perfectly again (thank you). In the DSP > Output Format > Channels selection pulldown menu there is among other settings: 1. - Source Number of Channels 6. - 5.1 Channels So I can accept that for dsf and surround in particular I am going to have to go into settings and change the settings from "Source Number of Channels" and later I must switch back (to to "5.1 Channels") if I have a DTS file I want to hear. I take it that this setting of 5.1 Channels which works on those dsf files, but does not play DTS is not giving me bit transparent playback. And in fact (I believe) anytime DTS is giving you white snow rather than decoding, you are not getting bit transparent or perfect sound to your DAC. Is this true, and so I should not leave my JRiver MC in "5.1 Channels" in the Channels output settings if I want top sound out of stereo FLAC? It's doing a re-write of the file (thus DTS is no longer pure) is what I think but not sure.
  13. My JRiver install went smoothly and seems perfect thus far. It was nice to see the player setting WASAPI/HDMI from the output menu, I selected it and bingo bit-transparent sound flowed out to my Oppo 103, and to receiver. I am using the DAC in the Oppo to decode 5.1 and output it to my AVR in analog. I am going over all my tags and doing touch-ups, as some things look different with a modern ver. of the software. I'll be paying within 17 days. Thanks for responding, appreciated.
  14. Well, if you have JRiver outputting through HDMI, then likely there is a black or blank video signal paired with the audio to make it work. It is being done and is common. One of the more comon reasons is to utlize the multi-chan DAC in an Oppo player. Oppos, later models anyway, do accept input from computer servers, they will decode every format just about including DSD or dsf files, and send out analog signals to receivers that do not have HDMI, nor USB for that matter. I have researched this arrangement for several years now. It works.
  15. I have several years of experience with an old "free" version of the JRiver sw. So I should be able to get it up and running fairly quickly. I recall many hours spent originally in an effort to get bit-perfect output from toslink optical. This time I am going HDMI with a card added just for that mode, as computer does not have it on board. I am praying it's not hours again trying to get it to play. I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail, sent from same city. Thank you for the reply. I am reading the JR forums as well gathering up tips on each step.
