  1. I now use playlist mode exclusively and boy is it clunky after using iTunes integration for years. Hate to say it but better system resolution makes it obviously better than iTunes integrated mode. You always think your system components are pretty resolving until you upgrade a bottleneck component and then you have to re-evaluate how good you thought things were. I discovered this after adding a Paul Hynes SR7 dual rail power supply to my SSD MacBook and Weiss INT202 earlier this year. I already thought I was doing pretty well before the Paul Hynes but it showed how much my source ( Naim DAC and XPS2 DR with Nordost Valhalla cabling) was being constrained by the 0s and 1s i was feeding it. For my music collection I simply couldn't imagine chasing anything better. My taste in music is the biggest constraint. At the same time I can't go back, even with the poorly recorded stuff.
  2. Couple of points - DSD is not universally accepted as being better. Many don't have access to it on their DAC and have read mixing mastering professionals comments that it's less than PCM 24/192 in quality. It's a niche market in a niche market - international availability is important. audiophiles are a niche market, you need to go worldwide to get more punters despite America being a big market. I understand a minimum of 1000 units is required at premium prices to make an audiophile mix worthwhile. - $10 is a dream mate, you are niche, you pay niche - 20 bucks is fine. - the master, recording quality is the most important thing. I was lucky enough to chat to Goyte via email about his last album. He recorded at 24 bit 44.1 and that is what he made available on his web site. Recording quality is key, not bit rate, although that is nice. Dynamics and a live sound are worth more than 192khz or DSD to audiophiles. Listen to Missy Hiiggin' s Hearts a mess on YouTube. This is an audiophile favourite at get togethers ( and is a Goyte song by chance). Sounds awesome on a decent setup, even $50 k systems . There's a lot more stuff on JJJ like a version and it sounds awesome, that's the alternative market to my mind. Stuff that sounds live, raw and exciting. Laney lanes cover of Gold on the Ceiling, Abbey May's Pony, and non Aussie stuff too like Austra and other touring artists in oz, lots of independent radio stations capture this great sounding dynamic live music. That's the market for audiophile alternative content in my opinion.
  3. For anyone interested, all is working once again. I went back to scratch and installed from os-x . My new approach will be to keep my Mac for playback only. With any luck that will minimize any future problems. System does sound really nice when all is well.
  4. Trying not to get too frustrated here. I am running Pure music demo and after some problems with playback (erratic firewire with computer reverting to inbuilt speakers), now pure music has gone terminal on me. - it always starts at the bottom right of the screen and drags itunes into that corner - pure music preferences is greyed out - pure music quit is also greyed out - the only way to quit is to force quit - the "this is a demo" pop-up message has stopped appearing - I though I might have run out of time as I installed this over a week ago and did the reinstall etc - but the manual says it will just make a noise when the time is up. Removing program to trash, deleting the preference files, restarting the computer and reinstalling pure music does not stop the above happening again. It seems to me that my uninstall process (as per the manual) is not a full uninstall. How do I get back to a clean slateso I can reinstall a working copy ? Thanks l
  5. I'm getting sick of this. I have rebuilt my Mac from scratch by reinstalling the operating system, redownloaded Pure Music, got everything working, then it all falls over again. I'm starting to thing Pure Music is rubbish and full of bugs. This is the third time today that its stopped working through my firewire interface. Now after a small respite of doing what it is supposed to do I am back to the laptop speakers AGAIN. I haven't changed any settings - this thing has an evil little mind of its own. Now it won't let me into Pure Music preferences and it won't shut down. I have to keep force quit the program so I can start again. Unless this program starts playing ball soon I am going to uninstall for good. Has anyone else had this problem or am I the only lucky one?
  6. Ok - Songbird works just fine. The hifi has come back to life. Looks like songbird upsamples as the HD light is still on on the Naim. Than didn't happen before. Thing is that I preferred the non-upsampled sound when I was running pure music. Itunes/puremusic however is still sending music to the laptop speakers. I just need to work out what is happening there.
  7. Thanks guys Well I discovered that the system preferences sound is the same setting as the midi settings - change one and you change the other. The pure music instructions say to set output and input to you DAC so I did that. The default is firewire I switched off the interface, unplugged it, waited, switched off the laptop, plugged everything back in, then restarted the whole lot. Everything has been off and unplugged overnight anyway so I was not too hopeful that the above would work. I have reinstalled puremusic and the weiss drivers. I noted that without the computer installed that the naim recognises the Weiss with its sync light, then the HD light comes on when I turn on the laptop. Everything seems to be talking to each other. I will try another audio program with no itunes (I believe play is free - correction Songbird ) and see how that goes. Otherwise a full rebuild of the laptop OS is all I can think to do. After that if I still have no luck I will be taking the interface back to my hifi dealer to test it on another system.
  8. Hi. I'm a newbie to computer audio and my new system is broken. I have Macbook pro 2010 running Puremusic/itunes via firewire into a brand new int202 Weiss interface then on into a Naim DAC Since Saturday I have been running the above system with excellent results. Today for some reason my Macbook would only send audio to its internal speakers. I switched on as per usual and this weedy sound came out of the laptop speakers instead of the hifi. The Naim DAC recognises the Weiss interface by showing its sync light. I note that this has included the high definition light - this may or may not be normal. The Macbook recognises the Weiss when I open the Weiss control panel. The Naim Dac is working just fine playing CDs via a DVD transport at this very moment (using the coax cable that was plugged into the Weiss) I have tried lots of different settings in the Mac system preferences-sound, midi settings, and Weiss control panel without success. I have tried itunes only and pure music. Only thing i noticed is that Itunes responds to system preferences(sound) internal speakers with sound from the internal speakers but no sound when I set system preferences to firewire out. When I turn on puremusic in that second setting the music once more comes from the laptop speakers. What audio settings should I use to get my system working again, assuming this is the problem. As mentioned before this was working 100% yesterday - I am at a loss as to why it suddenly refused to work after being shut down over night. thanks
