1. I dont have an SACD player, but I ripped the redbook from the Hybrid album of Hot Rocks. Sounds fantastic. I have not been real impressed with high res downloads. I have the 24/96 of "Band on the Run". I didnt compare it to a good rip of the redbook remaster. I would bet it would be hard to pick on a double blind. I can say high res is better in some ways, but not what I would call a game changer in all instances. I good remaster is the key. If HD Tracks keep charging $30 a pop they can count me out!
 2. My attention was also perked with the Ethernet protocol. I havent read anything Ethernet related, its all USB this and that.

I have been happy with one of the few, dare I say only "real" option out there for audio over Ethernet - being the Squeezbox variety. I love it. Its tweaky at times, needing to "log on" and all. There are work arounds for the quirks. I love the "cable independent" "bit perfect" nature of Ethernet. Hand shaking and all that good stuff. It makes me appreciate how hard it is to get the hardware and software thing right with Ethernet. Go Squeezebox!
 3. There are several good sites - I use this one. Quick service. Good prices. Solid core pure silver with Teflon insulation. http://www.homegrownaudio.com/
 4. I have a pair of Maggie MMG's. I have had to do quite some work on them, as well as the rest of my system to get the sound I am looking for. For short, I hacked out the crossovers and wiring in the MMG's. Went to t-amp vs. A/B mosfets. The planars are a bit "unforgiving". The "off axis" effects you are talking about means they are not playing well with the rest of your system. No room for mid-fi here. Everything needs to be absolutely clean. Go with silver in your wires/interconnects etc.
 5. Interesting details. The quality of the redbook is quite good enough for me! I havent really heard that much of a difference in 24/96 recordings vs good redbook when it is "handled" properly. IMO 16/44.1 has to filtered right by the server/DAC. Computer based audio has opened this field wide open. Topic for other threads....
 6. I agree with the thoughts that this is a good move, going to high res. audio downloads etc. I buy as much high res stuff as I can find. I hesitate to buy anything under 24/96. Thats me, but there are MANY like me.

So, I agree that we need to shoot higher - ie. 96khz, 192khz etc. Us audio nuts are always shooting for higher res. Not that there is THAT much of a difference now, but as data processing and delivery gets better and faster the whole scene could, and most likely will change. With USB 3.0 and other faster, fatter digital transfer protocols on the horizon we WILL be interested in higher and higher res. methods for our audio files. Jitter is one issue that is being addressed with better protocols. Resolution is another.

Just as 1080p video will most likely be replaced with even higher res. formats in the future. Audio will certainly follow the same trends.
