  1. Does it have HT bypass? I have the Nova and just bought an amp, so I was considering going to the NovaPre. What are the differences between the two (Pre's lack of amp aside). Thanks, Stephen
  2. ahhh, thanks maybe it was that USB didn't support hi-res? or I was completely led astray
  3. I have an older Mac Mini with 2GB, using iTunes. I have never had any problems. BUT: I haven't delved into hi-res because from I understand, and from my limited experience, older Mac mini's can't play hi-res files, and the newer one can.
  4. I don't think Peachtree should tell people the Nova does 24/96 ... on my third cable and still no luck. Guess I'm going to have to get a V-Link if I want to listen to any hi-res. Disappointing.
  5. It is a great value for $900. I will take your DAC limitations one step further, it can't do 24/96 either. Supposedly it can be done, but I have tried different cables, followed the MIDI instructions posted here and elsewhere, still nothing. So as long as you don't have any interest in playing hi-res files, you're good to go.
  6. Does Peachtree officially say that the unit can handle 24/96 via opt input? I had read that somewhere ... maybe its not that case if one needs this Helide Bridege to get it to work right? Aside from that point, us there anything else that is less expensive that does the trick ... I actually use an older mac mini for my music server (which I have been told doesn't output high res), and was only going to use the macbook to play high res files.
  7. I am having a problem getting 24/96 files to play on the Nova. Using my macbook, I set the midi correctly, and they will play out of the laptop's speakers. If I then plug into the Nova via Opt1 or Opt2, all I get is a weird rhythmic skipping sound. If I go into midi and change back to 16/48, the files play fine (but not in hi res) I have tried 2 different minitoslink cords. Kinda at a loss here.
  8. Hi- I just grabbed some Epos ELS-3 off Audiogon for $150 used. I needed something while my Opera Mezza's are being fixed. At first hook up I noticed the deficiencies of course, as they were veiled and had considerablely less range than the Mezza's. (PS. anyone else heard the Mezza's? impressions? These are my first monitors) After getting over that, I am really enjoying these; they just sound nice, very pleasant to listen to. They are probably worst at playing orchestral music, they just cant handle the dynamic range and populous instumentation; but really shine on small group jazz, classical, and singer-songwriter vocals. (So these don't meet the dynamic needs that you want, but if you only have
  9. Dont want to use Macbook as music server cause its the only computer in our house, and I dont want to have to grab it from the wife or kid when I want to listen to music.
  10. "2) Specs: I would avoid G4 MacMini and the early non-Core 2 machines. Get as much memory as possible." Is older machine with added memory OK? Or is there something else that is not kosher about the older machines? "3) The TimeCapsule is more designed for the backup and archiving files who's contents change regularly." Understood, but since I already have it, it does the job regardless, no?
  11. Hi, I would like to switch to an older mac mini as a dedicated music server (along with using it to watch some video). I want to use an older mac mini for cost savings. Trying to keep mini and HD solution to under $400. 1) Is there any concerns in general with moving from a Macbook to Mac Mini as far a considerable loss in sound quality or overall functionality? (I am aware that I will be restricted to USB as connection to DAC) 2) Are there minimum system specifications I need to think about? 3) For HD space, I have a 1TB Time Capsule for backup (just bought, never used). For primary storage, I was thinking of trying to get an older mini that has already been upgraded to 500GB. Right now I have just over 250GB of music, and can't imagine having much more than double that. I don't like keeping music around that I never really listen to, just a personal choice. HD space aside, I like the idea of internal HD for simplicity sake, but am not against External HD. Is Internal better/worse than External? 4) Assuming I go with External HD, and that a Mac Mini will cost me
  12. Thanks for the 411 on the Tom Petty. I hadn't planned on purchasing this album, but now am going to grab the vinyl and download ... gotta get behind this!
  13. I have a MHDT Paradisea, connected via USB. My "Properties For:" is set to C-Media USB (the only choice aside from "Built-in..") For format, I am only seeing 48 and 44.1; and 2ch 16bit. I was under the impression this DAC supported 96/24
  14. A big thanks to Chris and others who posted their thoughts in this thread. I am up and running: Macbook black, MHDT Paradisea USB Tube DAC. This sound quality is better than my Arcam CD-92, which I sold. Overall, I still prefer the sounds of sqeaky clean vinyl (to redbook CD), but the convenience, low maintenence, music browseing capability, and high-res content have left my turntable mostly unused the past couple of weeks. Speaking of high-res .... wow!! I downloaded some of the free content from various sites, in particular the stuff from 2L, and its amazing. I will be ordering some titles from them soon. Quick question on high-res ... with limited content available for download, can DVD-based music disks be burned to my mac and played back at its native quality?
  15. Well, I picked up Macbook (black) yesterday. Have MHDT Paradisea tube DAC with USB on the way. Mac store was out of Airport Express, but its on order. I plan on ABing computer to DAC USB connection vs wireless, either way, I'm all set I think. Am I missing anything here? I think I have what I need to get started. Only thing left to do will be to get external storage/backup. Is there anything wrong with going with Apple Timecapsule for that? Are there considerable better options than that for the money considering the Timecapsule is doubles as router. Thanks, Stephen
