  1. With Pure music for example you can use their digital volume control to adjust gain to your dac so your system can be very simple.ie macmini to usb dac to amplifier to speakers. Is this approach as good sonically to keeping the digital volume fixed and using an analog volume control after your usb dac has converted to analog? I have read a paper by daniel weiss that basically says that a correctly dithered digital volume control has no sonic problems. If this is true then using Apple's Remote application to control volume thru Pure music itunes mac mini will yield an easy to use interface with volume control. Also very cost effective. What has been your experience?
  2. The drawing is accurate. The improvement of biwiring is because the 2 drivers are separated from each other and have individual crossovers. Drivers have complex impedance, back emf interactions, and intermodulation distortion effects that can be reduced by isolating the driver/crossover networks. In effect the amplifier sees a simpler load and can maintain maximum damping factor control. If a loudspeaker was designed and "voiced" to be bi-wired it will sound better. Many products however, just jumped on the biwire bandwagon and added extra binding posts to be in fashion. Also, some loudspeaker designers have preferred to be single wired having accounted in the crossover with impedance matching circuits, (zobel filters)and feel that they can provide a better end user experience by limiting the variables involved in hookup. The quality of those free jumpers that come with biwireable speakers is very detrimental to good sound. In short ,if the speaker is biwireable it should sound better biwired and if you decide not to biwire replace the jumper with the same quality of speaker cable that you use for the main runs.
