  1. I recently purchased a Luxman sq-N10 integrated amp as a headphone and speaker amplifier. This is the best amplifier that I have had in my music system and I suspect that it's sound quality will be suitably close to the P-700u at a one third the cost. With my Denon AH-D7000 headphones plugged into it, I get superlative sound. Seems that Luxman is back in North America with truly stellar audio products. Bill
  2. Your mention of the "subtely fatiquing" with the sound quality is something that I recognised with my music system. I have a HP pavilion DV5000 laptop via USB (windows 7 /JRM 15) to a Benchmark HDR connected to a MC-275 amp / Rogers Monitor II speakers. Sound was too bright and clinical to my ears. My solution was changing my laptop for a Lenovo M57 desktop (core duo, 2 GB ram, Ubuntu 12.04, gmusicstreamer). Sound quality is now superb; just like live music. Was so satisfied with this system that I added a 1 terra bite HD and a blackberry Playbook using a VNC server software to control my music playback. The game changers for me was first the Lenovo computer then Ubuntu over windows. The biggest difference was using the Lenovo as my server. The reason I went with the Lenovo was that I purchased one for a grand-son and when setting it up for him I decided to try it out as a music server with windows 7 / JRM15. The result was so good that I purchased one for myself and afterwards moved from Windows to Linux with a slight but noticeable improvement as well in sound quality. Cannot comment on the technical aspects as my computer knowledge is too limited.
  3. AudioDoctor, I heartly agree with you. I have found Linux Mint 10 and 11 to be solid performers. I also found Ubuntu 10 & 11.04 solid too. My reason in going with Lubuntu 11.10 and Linux Mint 11 is the availability of a lowlatency kernel, which to my ears, is a positive step in improving sound through my dac. If there were lowlatency kernels available for those other distro's I would have remained with LM 10. As for Lubuntu 11.10, I have had no issues at all with it, and it performes well on my 6 year old laptop. Different dac's and computers are a factor in all of this, so results may differ. I hope your new "Sonore" music server performs well for you.
  4. Using "bindfs" with Lubuntu 11.10 and mpd may not present any problems JUST running mpd. In my case, with my present partion setup, I no longer have the option to use another distro such as Linux Mint as I have in the past for most of my computing chores, so Lubuntu has to be configured for other computing needs as well. Using "bindfs" may impose to great a performance penalty with my setup. As to permissions, I am still working my way through it and do not feel at all competient with it yet. Happily, mpd is running perfectly in its present configuration. I have noticed that alsa card selection can be problematic, however phofman's suggestion to use "plughw:B10,0" has proven to be stable in alsa. Update: I changed my /etc/fstab from "user" to default", works great and no longer need to install "pysdm" This journey into the wonderful world of mpd has been greatly benefical for my audio needs. The sound improvement from mpd and a lowlatency kernel install (ppa abogani) has satisfied my ears, which is something that my Windows 7 & JRM 15 combo did not accomplish. The improvement to online radio is more significant than the differences with recorded cd music. As I spend more time listening to online music, this improvement is truly appreciated. This software portion of audio has enabled me to start the process of building a music server, based on my present setup. Once I have sufficient understanding of permissions so that I can duplicate my mpd setup without help, I will do the hardware thing. The invaluable help I have received from Chris, phofman and others, is truly appreciated and will hopefully lead others to pursue a Linux solution for their audio needs.
  5. Chris that will be very helpful and appreciated. Its like starting a new course in navigation, but necessary if one wishes to get from A to B. Blessings Bill
  6. This time I really hope you access your audio folders/files under the gmpc database option, just press F2. Inside gmpc you should see a directory tree with "/" at the top , followed by "Classical" and "Jazz" one level down, and then inside "Jazz" all your folders, with individual tracks inside each folder, and the same for "Classical" MPD is up and running and so is Audacious! Truly fine sound is comming from my speakers. Don't know how I can adequately thank you for all of your patience and encouragement I have received from you over the past couple of weeks. If I was in the UK I would be buying you a pint and dinner too. I have some other questions concerning mpd but they can be addressed at another time. Will also post my thoughts on this process and respond to some qweries from other forum participants as soon as I have finished processing all this.

  8. Chris, am I ever confused. In gmpc Directories I can see Classical and Jazz. Under Titles I can see Jazz Classical and Radio. Closed mpd and reopened it again and everything is working and playing wonderfully. WOW!!!! But after listening to a piece of classical music I decided to try another selection but, I cannot see individual files nor play them. All the directories show up but not the individual music files. I have concluded that the classical music that was playing was not coming from my music files but from my Radio files. Also, audacious can see the music files but cannot play them. When I took another look at sudo ls -l outputs: sudo ls -l "media/sda4/Jazz/Diana Krall/Quiet Nights" I get bill@Oneiric:~$ sudo ls -l "/media/sda4/Jazz/Diana Krall/Quiet Nights" [sudo] password for bill: total 321992 -rw------- 1 root root 32477 2010-11-03 15:46 cover.jpg -rw------- 1 root root 16364951 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Este Seu Olhar.flac -rw------- 1 root root 32411150 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Every Time We Say Goodbye.flac -rw------- 1 root root 29205698 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry.flac -rw------- 1 root root 25519157 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.flac -rw------- 1 root root 28289189 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - I've Grown Accustomed to His Face.flac -rw------- 1 root root 28795255 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Quiet Nights.flac -rw------- 1 root root 24052812 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - So Nice.flac -rw------- 1 root root 32368921 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - The Boy from Ipanema.flac -rw------- 1 root root 26126035 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Too Marvelous for Words.flac -rw------- 1 root root 31760851 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Walk on By.flac -rw------- 1 root root 24787163 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - Where or When.flac -rw------- 1 root root 29975941 2010-09-16 14:20 Diana Krall - You're My Thrill.flac Shouldn't it be "-x------- 1 root root" ? So much to learn but I think that it will prove to be valuable for future Linux endeavours. Sorry for the negative results.
  9. Music files are visable in mpd now but when I click on them nothing happens. I cannnot get any further. Seems that my permissions are still not set correctly as I mentioned in my previous posting.
  10. If I am understanding permissions correctly concerning the following: bill@Oneiric:~$ sudo ls -l /media/sda4 [sudo] password for bill: total 24 drwxr-xr-x 87 root root 4096 2012-02-21 21:17 Classical drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:52 Jazz drwx------ 2 root root 16384 2012-02-21 10:45 lost+found bill@Oneiric:~$ ls -l "/media/sda4/Jazz/Diana Krall" total 24 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 A Night in Paris drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 From This Moment On drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 Quiet Nights drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 The Girl in the Other Room drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 The Look of Love Means that I need to have the output below, to access to my music files? drwxr-xr-xr 87 root root 4096 2012-02-21 21:17 Classical drwxr-xr-xr 12 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:52 Jazz
  11. Thanks for providing clarity to permissions Chris. I have mpd playing online radio and it sound wonderful. Next is getting mpd to where I can enter new music into the database and play them.
  12. bill@Oneiric:~$ sudo ls -l "/media/sda4/Jazz/Diana Krall" [sudo] password for bill: total 24 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 A Night in Paris drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 From This Moment On drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 Quiet Nights drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 The Girl in the Other Room drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:47 The Look of Love drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:51 When I Look in Your Eyes
  13. Sure learning a lot about permissions. The only way I could get my music files into the partition was by root. Hopefully I will find a way to do this without going to root. bill@Oneiric:~$ sudo ls -l /media/sda4/Jazz [sudo] password for bill: total 40 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:46 Dave's New Story drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:51 Diana Krall drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:48 Earl Klugh drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:48 Eric Clapton drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:49 Michael Kaeshammer drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:49 Peter Van Huffel drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:50 Ranee Lee drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:50 Russell Watson drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:50 Susan Boyle drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:51 The Very Tall Band bill@Oneiric:~$ ls -l /media total 16 drwx------ 1 bill bill 12288 2012-02-21 17:33 336A39B6446E0931 drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2012-02-21 20:46 sda4
  14. Yes, audacious should be able to see your "music partition" now! In the "open files" dialogue ( File > Open Files ) it should be on the left hand list beneath as an item beneath "File System". I got lost here!!!! If you men in Firefox, yes I can see all the files but I cannot use them.
