  1. Mmrb, amazing response to that thread! I'm sure I have room to improve with mains power - I have some hum in my turntable, and some from the TV. Thank you for sharing. I'm going to try and take in as much as much as I can.
  2. Thanks Bobfa. Talking to my wiring contractor this week hopefully. My cable enters house in living room near my TV/Stereo, but I might try and relocate NAS, and wireless router to the study so only modem and switch are in audio rack. I was thinking of validating low emf running through ethernet cables via a device like this https://www.amazon.com/Cornet-ED78S-Meter-ElectroMagnetic-Detector/dp/B00P67QLA0/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1517282976&sr=8-18&keywords=emf+meter unless you know of others I should be considering?
  3. This is incredibly useful info. Thank you both for the insights (and somehow I had missed that Networking set-up from Chris). Those audioquest cables look incredibly expensive in the article above. Which brands did you opt for in the end? Also @sdolezalek are you using the fiber cables at the moment or are they just there for future proofing? Asking as I'm wondering if there is some way to transport standard Comcast internet service via fiber cables even if you don't have a Comcast fiber service.
  4. So glad I posted. Thanks for the helpful reply @sdolezalek I hadn't even considered fiber. Which cable did you opt for? A quick search suggests there are at least 3 types. You also mention terminating the Cat7 capables- can you tell me more about this? I was just thinking of running them from modem under floors and into a wall with an outlet so devices could plug in there. Finally since most routers have 4 ethernet ports did you use some type of device to increase this number? Curious if others have lessons learned from house wiring too....
  5. Guys, I'm about to have new flooring put in and would appreciate guidance on cabling to future proof the family's media/music consumption as much as possible. Needs -We want to remove any WiFi use. -Listening room is currently the TV Room (including modem) which will continue -Want to listen to music in front room (may relocate Turntable there) -Kids will want to listen to music in their bedrooms soon -Would also like to have wired Security cameras around house. Current set-up in TV/Listening room -Gigabit Internet with Comcast, Netgear CM1000 (Docsis 3.1), Synology Router RT2600ac, Synology NAS, Ultrarendu>W4S Dac-2>Mcintosh C46 Preamp>Job 225 amp>Salk Song Tower Speakers Specific Questions: -Any recommendations on Ethernet cable to future proof? -Would XLR cabling from the Mcintosh degrade if it was around 36ft -Any other equipment recommendations/tips based on your experience? Thanks in advance.
  6. Can anyone provide updates here? Can this card work with the W4S Dac-2? I'd love to buy a CAPS if it can.
  7. This is a good discussion - it looks like there are different scenarios here that we should enumerate. I usually run my PC in headless mode, but I'm with Matthias, that there are times when you want to hook this system up to your HDTV. This is especially true because VGA inputs are not always found on modern TVs. Scenarios could include: - Listening to music with the wife (in my case she'll stick around when I have a photo slide show of the kids running). - Running J River in Theater Mode at a party - Watching High Def content in which I care about the audio quality (e.g a concert). Perhaps Chris could accomodate these different needs with one version of CAPS that has an HDMI input for this type of user?
  8. Thanks for doing this Chris. I'd appreciate being able to take advantage of the i2s input on my W4S Dac-2 (assuming you even found i2s to be worthwhile). I also hope it would have the horse power to let me play streamed 1080P from my slingbox. Windows® or Mac® Minimum Requirements Intel® Core™ 2 Duo or better DirectX 9 Class video card with more than 256 MB of dedicated memory for Windows PC More details here: Slingbox.com - Tech Specs
  9. Thanks bleedink. The Pannies looked very tempting but i found there to be 2 issues - 1. Check the AVS forums there are a number of complaints about image burn in. i often run the TV with JRiver in theater mode, and until JRiver 18 comes out - it sounds like the newer Panasonics could be prone to issues here. The other issue i ran into was the spdif output on 2 TVs I tried was close to a number of other connections and very unreliable - Majorly disappointing for me because you can generally score some good deals on those sets. Likely i think I'll see if i can find a decent Sony, Samsung or Sharp for under 1.5k to see if it can do the job.
  10. Thanks for the detailed replies gents - this was really helpful. Souptin - i also found that running Xbox sound through the TV internals degraded the sound. When it went straight to DAC it was superb. looks like I may have to sacrifice some sound to get 1080p though HDMI on Xbox, but could still rely on VGA input for PC connection. Suprised you guys haven't been tempted by a CAPS 2.0 yet. I might use a cheapo laptop as standin until the next CAPS version comes out.
  11. I'm in the market for a new HDTV, but I'd appreciate some feedback on features/attributes/suggested models given that i will eventually purchase a CAPS 2.0/3.0 (when it is ready). i couldn't find any threads discussing this, but i'm sure I'm not the only one doing this research. I post to AVS forums, but would really appreciate the audiophile perspective. Requirements: I have a 2.1 Sound set-up with the W4S Dac-2 going straight to a 2 channel amp. PC wise i use JRiver in theater mode for parties, and also use a slingbox to view streamed SD streams hence i cannot use a headless set-up. I also have to have the video and audio set-ups in the same system due to space. I am looking for a 50 inch plus TV and am open to plasma or LCD. Questions: 1.HDMI/VGA for PC to TV: Unless a CAPS 3.0, has a HDMI output it looks like i'll need to have a VGA output to connect the PC to the TV. What i found when i used a Panasonic plasma VT30 is that I could use HDMI for the video, but if I also inserted the USB cable the audio got routed that way. Are there any cons to doing this? It just feels like i could be degrading the sound some how. 2. What is your preferred connection for PC to a HDTV and why? 3. I watch feeds from the PC on the TV, but have found quality varies greatly from model to model. The best quality i found so far was the panasonic VT30 plasma but that omits the VGA input needed for a CAPS 2.0 PC. Which TV models are you using and why? 4. Any other recommendations given my needs above?
  12. Hi folks, I recently purchased my first dac (wyred 4 sound), and I'd like to ensure I have the best possible sound while listening watching media through Slingbox software (product that allows you to stream your TV to a PC). Within slingbox settings all I can do to tweak audio is increase audio rate, but there must be some other steps I should take for general apps on Windows? I'm using Windows 7, 32 bit if that helps. As a side note i was successful in improving my sound in JRiver but I assume this only applies when I'm using that app. Thanks for any guidance here.
